I've got a question for you guys;
I've been offered a Volvo V70 D5 very, very, very cheap. I've known the car from new, one owner, always been to the local dealer,... D5244 engine with only 140.000km's on the clock, full service history, full option.
The problem is, the engine has developed a problem with its swirl flaps. Now I'm not very familiar with these engines, and I can't seem to find too much info about them online.
The current owner (my beloved father-in-law) has had a quote from the local Volvo dealer at €2500 to fix this. Which he's not too keen on paying, since it's a diesel and "very old" and he can't drive it to any major city because of the Low Emission Zones...
Thus my questions:
- is it possible to simply remove the swirl flaps and drive the engine without them? Will this cause ELM's? Will this be a problem for MOT emission tests? - If not: could I DIY this?

The bmw e90 3 series had problematic swirl flaps that could just be removed.

People are keen to remove the flaps but I do wonder if that comes at the cost of low end shove.
I know it's not a fair comparison, but my dad's E61 535d with the flaps drives nicer than a friend's E46 330d with the flaps removed, with significantly more get up and go from almost idle. Both use the M47 3.0 diesel engine.
If you can change them yourself, that is what I'd be tempted to do. On a Mondeo, it wasn't that hard. On a 2.0 petrol the flaps made a pleasant difference to the low-end torque.

Hello Milord Depends on why the flaps aren't functioning. Are they clogged with crud and need cleaning/replacing or is it just the actuator arm that has popped off because the ball is worn or snapped off. If it's the former, the quote from the dealer/garage is high because the injector pipes that need removing to get to the flaps are also replaced. Do they need to be? Some people don't and have had no issues whilst others found the pipes leak and had to be replaced. If it's the latter check that the arm moves freely, i.e.the flaps aren't stuck, then either buy the Volvo repair kit or go to a model shop and build your own mini linkage. The stepper motor should recalibrate. Some people have made a bump stop for the arm to prevent it over reaching and snapping the linkage. 're engine check lights. Some variants run without throwing a code others recognise it and drop into limp mode. A good place to go for info is here: www.volvoforums.org.uk/index.phpHTH

Thanks for the info guys! I coudln't find too much info online sadly.
It doesn't drop into limp mode. Just the EML.
I'm pretty sure it's the flaps themselves that need replacing. This is because the car sometimes doesn't throw the EML (mostly when driving VERY gently). I'm assuming if it were the actuator arm the EML would be on constantly?
I'll look into it more closely this weekend to see if the flaps are loose.
The repair kit is 200 for the flaps alone, and 500 for the complete kit with pipes and gaskets iirc. If this saves the car, it's cheap either way.
I feel reluctant to remove the injectors as I've never done this before and have heard horror stories about them breaking in two...

Aren't the swirl flaps on the d5 inside the rocker cover?

rocker cover needs to be removed yes. But they're not "inside" in the way that you can't replace the rocker cover from another car and solve the issue This image shows where they're located

You can get an aftermarket swirl flap kit and injector pipes here
I thought it was just removal of injector pipes to allow rocket cover off, not the injectors themselves.

Hi join volvo forum UK. Lots of info on there. www.volvoforums.org.uk/[/quote]Yeah definitely the place to go for help and info... I thought it was just removal of injector pipes to allow rocket cover off, not the injectors themselves. I stand corrected on that and if you join the aforementioned forum you be able to see this postThere are pictures to go with the post which should assist you with doing the job.
