Ive done it numerous times now, I'm blessed and actually live near inverness. How many days are you planning on doing it over?
lots of beautiful places to see on the way.
Would recommend going over to isle of skye too and even down to fort william on your way back
any questions feel free to ask, or give us a shout once you have dates, could see you off at the start!

Probably 9 or so days all in (from lands end) Not planning on cannonballing it. I've stayed at fort william before when I was younger with family it's a nice place. There's a couple of extra stops I will be adding for personal reasons, I'll look it skye Yeah I'll post what dates I'll be doing it if anyone wants to say hi or tag along. I'm 1000% for this apart from the camping stove in the back of the car, that sounds like the opening scene in an episode of casually. I've not fully planned out the stove thing yet. But I know where your coming from. Open flames in a confined spaces is a hazard.
It the carbon monoxide poisoning that'll get you first. At the back of the car while the bootlid is open might be ok but a big no-no inside when all doors shut.

Most certainly, I was never planning on cooking with all the doors closed. Boot would of be open at a minimum. So easily get smoked out other wise (I tend to over cook things). I'm thinking more of having a folding table or something that slides out of the back that I'll put the stove on so it's out side.

Like your plans and the wagon now makes sense as accommodation too 👍 I have been wanting to do the 500 for ages so will watch with interest 🙂

At the beginning of the century I took my then fiancé, now wife of eighteen years, and her then almost four year old son on a thousand mile road trip to meet my parents for the first time. We used a 23 year old XC Falcon station wagon that I'd bought for $580. We did it in two days sleeping overnight in the car. The only issues we had were a battery that I knew was dodgy and should have replaced before we left and a snow tyre that developed a weird lump after about three hundred miles (it was the height of summer) and actually burst when the tyre fitter was demounting it. I see no reason whatsoever to not undertake a journey such as you intend in an old car and wish you well with it. Please do report your experiences.

We had our "kitchen" in the back of our car. This worked really well and the tailgate was a great roof that kept me dry in the rain while cooking up a storm. I agree, cooking only in a well ventilated vehicle.
I had a look at the map you attached. This will be a great trip. Your car will do the trip easy. These old Honda's are great cars.
Keep us posted.

Nice car and an awesome trip - not sure if I have ever done the full route in one trip, but I have been up tot he highlands 5 times with 2 different bikes and 3 different cars. Plotting it again this year in the latest MX5.
I'd budget a bit more time for Skye, its a special place and not far from the western end of the loop.
Stove should be safe enough with the tail up and on a small floating table..

Thanks for all the feedback and sharing of stories guys. It's awesome to hear them. Please keep them coming Had some time to do some work on the car to sort (hide) any obvious MOT failures. Easy one first, wipers. They were old and rubbish. They all got replaced with eurocarparts cheapest, £15 all in. Whilst changing the blades I realised how truly dirty both screens were. Luckily I had some glass polish laying around, set to them with some elbow grease and am happy with the results. Its hard to take pics of glass but I tried. This was brand new before I started Makes such a big difference Any professionals or people who like to see a job done correctly. Look away now. If you don't mind a bodge, keep on reading. I've said before, I don't want to put alot of energy into this car before it's not and the last thing I want to do is start chasing rust. So this repair is a bodge, but I have a rep to uphold (ha) so I won't tell you what I did. Just known this isn't the recommended or right way to do this. That out of the way. Here's is before Scabby grotty hole just close enough to being structural that a MOT person may not like it And after. Not pretty but prettier. Also 100% less holely However looking over the rest of the car I'm fairly confident it'll pass, the brakes look good, can't hear any knocking on the road. Hope are currently high. Another issue I found but doesn't related to MOT is I couldn't adjust heater temp. From previous experience I knew the switch was too free and not moving the cable that opens and closes the hot water valve. The fix is self was simple just re attach the cable (assuming it wasn't snapped) Getting to the back of the switch wasn't as simple. You have to remove the entire center console trim. There are screws hidden everywhere. Including one in each vent which is a silly place to put them for obvious reasons. Trim finally removed to get access to the Heater controls. Here's the problem; That should be connected Problem solved I now have the choice of hot or cold air. It's the little things but I have to admit the car is growing on me, alot. It was meant to be a throw away car but that may change.. I'm currently debating fitting the spare coilovers I have as I like my cars modded and this does roll a bit in corners but it may make the ride a tad harsher, thoughts? Also looking for a name for the car so if you have any suggestions....

Scabby grotty hole just close enough to being structural that a MOT person may not like it How does a thing like this pass an mot inspection? Even eleven months ago it must have been pretty terrible. UK regulations must be a lot looser in that respect than NZ ones. Genuinely interested.

To be fair I did poke that in a bit but I honestly don't know. My worry is that it was done by a "friendly" MOT tester.

Coilovers and harsher ride beats standard height a billion times over.

I prefer a smoother ride and plenty of ground clearance myself.

This sounds like a great idea, good luck on the trip, and careful you don't get too attached to the car

Do the coil overs for sure. There used to be a dark green one of these by me on coil overs and it was the coolest looking thing ever.
Did you pick this car up from the midlands somewhere? I did see one for sale not too long ago and I was very tempted as I haven't seen one for sale in ages and I love them.

They've got decent following out there and I've seen some really nice looking ones. Which gets me thinking about improving mine..... I got it from stow on wold not sure if that counts as Midlands or not Here's one I've seen on the Facebook groups for inspiration

I live up there 25miles west of JoG Great roads, but for gawds sake brush up on your single track road etiquette, pass 3 passing places with a car on your tail and you enrage the locals. Don’t worry about the sheep roaming free, they won’t wander in your path but the deer will. Caithness isn’t the best but North West Sutherland is stunning, take in Strathy beach and Smoo cave in Durness if the weather is up to it. If you are about Easter time there is the annual MoD war games usually ongoing off the coast of cape wrath.
