Wehay was checking in to see if it was a calendar post, still not had mine, think it's gone to my grandads great work as usual, I thought it had all new arches when it got resprayed? Saying that, it's a working van, our roads are covered in plop and these aren't known for their awesome metallic properties. Other side had a arch repair, this side just got a patch where there was a bit of rust… but like you say, it’s used all year round and old vehicles, pre galv bodywork… I guess it’s not too unexpected

Just too scared especially the 2.7k I was quoted to put an arch repair panel in. Might try it myself since it's hidden by the skirt, I don't mind strong but hideous if it cant be seen, it will never be a minter

Yeah, if you can’t see it then it just needs to be strong The rot would get in from the same place though wouldn’t it? So you’d see it at the end of the sills like on the van?

Side skirts cover the base of the arch, wrap around it even, so can't be seen without removing them. Lot to be said for tigaseal, been on 10 years now

Small update since I’ve done something to the van, Since last time, I’ve owned it over two years now, and next week will be a year since the Isuzu swap Mileage is about 30k miles in my ownership, and not quite 15k in the last year. Will be due an oil and filter change in the next couple of weeks (I did one at 5k when fitting the engine and shall be doing a 10k service from then on) But actual work has been performed! Had an advisory for lower ball joints on the MOT, they’ve been getting looser and have started making a bit of noise so with the end of winter (well hopefully) I swapped the joints and had a clean round whilst there Then did the tracking And refitted the 16s, with nice new Nankang tyres on I then gave it a proper wash, but ran out of time before I did the interior. But I’ve got a battery hoover so if I finish early I really ought to give it a clean! I did wipe the top of the dashboard in January though, so it’s not terrible But I now have a furry apprentice who comes to work with me on occasion Which just shows how little there is to update, since Betsy is twice the size Still get compliments and comments, still take photos Which probably explains why I’ve got another! Have got another phase 2 (a phase 1 would have been nice, I could have backdated my red one and had amber indicators) It’s been in storage for about 8 years, it starts and runs but when I tried to drive it, the clutch went.. which obviously sealed the deal Plan A is to get it back on the road, it’s a low blow… I’ve got a pile of low blow bits that will sort it mechanically. Needs some welding in similar places to the red one. There’s some grot round the rear arches but not in a hurry to sort that. But some sorting should see an MOT, then current thinking is to do all the stuff I won’t do to mine. Currently thinking of putting a VW 20VT in it…

You'll find on an M plate it's a mixture of ph1 and ph2 parts, mine had a ph2 bonnet (different hinge spacing), ph1 front end, ph1 wings, ph2 ignition switch (different angle on the column) and its generally a bit of hit and miss with a few other bits. Looks clean though, ph1 lights and grill and get the ambers on

Went to collect Astravan #2 the racevan. Put a battery on it, cranked it a bit and it fired up, the clutch hasn’t healed and was slipping enough to stop the van backing out of the field with the dragging brakes not helping. Started reversing, looking in the mirrors, and went straight into the gate that couldn’t be seen because of the vinyl covering the rear screen So that wasn’t a huge success, loaded it up, brought it home and then went to fit a spare tailgate. Got a white one, which is in the shed… but there’s a Lupo in front of the shed and the keys are probably in Scotland So I’ll fit the rusty red one, the tailgate is pretty ropey but I’d kept it for the screen. The hinge pins wouldn’t bash out though, so after messing about I gave up and removed the screws and just bolting the red tailgate on. Shut it to check the fit. And there’s no catch… doh! So tried to remove the bulkhead but couldn’t get the top out, and had to squeeze under it and over the white tailgate I’d just dumped inside (because it was shedding glass everywhere) climb over the broken glass like a fat John Maclean tribute and release the catch… With that done I decided that now would be the ideal time to clean up all the glass rather than ignoring it (which was the original plan) With that done and a ghetto boot release made I parked it up out of the way and called it a night I’ve ordered some bits, got some more GSi brakes on the way, not going to waste any money on these brakes if they are ok for now, or I can sort with spares I’ll do that for now, if not I’ll go straight to upgrading. There’s some holes to sort in the sills and rear inner arches will sort them and probably gaffer tape the outer arches for mot. Need to check the suspension and running gear over, swap the clutch and get an MOT And in the meantime I’m looking for a mk4 golf gti, Audi TT, or something with a 20vt. Feelers are out, currently Audi TT look cheapest and most plentiful but a lot of them are Quattro and that’s a step too far at the mo.

Bit of a slow burn… Been doing bits around life, because I’ve no real urgency to get this on the road I can take my time a bit which makes it a bit less pressured on one hand, but on the other I’d like to see some progress. Since getting it home and swapping the tailgate, I’ve had it running and it had a squeal, disconnecting aux belts helped to find the source as the power steering pump, the plan has always been to swap in a manual rack like I have in my work van, but these are getting pretty rare now, in the end I found a GTE rack from a mk1 or 2 but also fits the mk3. From info supplied by GTViva, the petrol engined cars were 22-1 ratio and the diesel engined 24.5-1 ratio So this will be slightly quicker than the one in the red van, but shortly will have a petrol engine anyway. That got fitted, and in doing so the track rod end rubbers had completely perished. I built up a spare pair of steering arms a while back, so fitted those and will refurb these as spares at some point. Whilst the front end was apart I cleaned up and rebuilt the struts and fitted some spares I’d aquired along with new lower arms and track rod ends And before fitting that I had a look at the clutch, which was slipping I grabbed the clutch assembly from the low blow in the red van, but it’s different. The gearbox in the red van was an F15, so assume this one has a F13 and the flywheels must be slightly different as the pressure plate wouldn’t fit either. The clutch was badly glazed, so I’m hoping that rubbing it with some wet and dry is enough to get it the kilometer from my house to the MOT place, don’t really care if it gets back again as the running gear is coming out, but if not I’ll have to swap the flywheel and gearbox which is more work than I want to do, but at least it’ll be free, the alternative is to buy clutch bits Anyway, box is back in and rebuilt, need to do the tracking, but it’s back on its wheels, which I’ve swapped for the Irmscher 5 spokes as these tyres aren’t cracked! And I’ve made a start on the welding Somewhere in there I swapped from 0.6 mig wire to 0.8 and I think it’s a bit easier. Had to put a patch on the inside sill near the beam mounting, I couldn’t get into it to cut it out and do it properly, I’ve a mate with a 2 poster which I could use, but needs to be roadworthy for that, so I plated it for now and will have to go back to that. Also the rear arches will need work later on too. So next up is to weld the passenger side

Didn’t post any before shots, When I started poking about I found rot in the passenger footwell and the drivers sill. This sort of suggested it was coming through the scuttle area and when I looked there I found mouse nests and a load of mess. I’ve cleaned it out, and with the carpets binned haven’t seen any water ingress since Also scored a boss kit and fitted an old Momo wheel I had kicking around, it makes me happy (especially as the wheel on there was sticky and baggy) I concede it might be a bit Max Power though

Nice work John, mine rotted in the same place only considerably worse, it is the scuttle panel they warp and stop sealing, finding a straight one is a nightmare now, had to silicon mine in the end. If its gone there double check the bulkhead behind the pedals, there's a seam where water sits in the sound deadening and rots that out as well, nightmare to get at with the engine in.

And the next piece was the replacement running gear ** apologies for the nearly modern content ** I ended up buying an Octavia VRS, I put a bid on it, and then forgot until I’d won. Was a bit cross that, with the cost of scrap I paid more than I wanted… but it has MOT until October, so I saved a bit on collection by driving it home So this is it when I collected it I remembered to take a first fill up shot Anyway, it’s a late mk1 octavia with the 180hp 20vt motor, an AUQ with fly by wire throttle and 5 speed box. It’s got a couple of issues, the brakes were squealing I was told, but it would drive home. And it had a water leak from somewhere, it’s not internal but does drop a bit, so probably a hose or something. Did drive home, brakes weren’t ok, I bought a set of pads for £9 the next day and swapped them It has a seized calliper, so just wore the inside pad on one of the back brakes, at least I can move it around now Also it had been used as a van/tractor and was absolutely filthy. I gave it a bit of a scrape out up the farm Then I decided since it had a towbar, I’d use it to take the Fug to drag day, so over a few evenings when Lucy was working I cleaned it up a bit, and it started to look a bit more acceptable And it towed the Fug very well And it even got a run on the strip, apart from a bit of grill falling off when I did a burn out and then running over it It did ok, book 1/4 mile is 16.4s. I managed a 16.8, but couldn’t find 3rd…. I suspect that might be something to do with the hydraulic clutch and 162k engine mounts Extra photo, because I’m a big kid So apart from details of it being broken and bits sold, and photos of the running gear that’s about the last you’ll see of the octy In the photos it looks ok, but there are some serious water ingress issues with it, and a fair bit of rust especially in the back and back of the sills/wheel arches

Plan is to have a better look when the engine is out, the dash will come out too. There loads to sort, the Skoda has hydraulic clutch, so I’ll either modify Skoda bits if I can, or can use Saab hydraulic clutch bits (but they are getting sparse) And it’s fly by wire, so will need to modify throttle, or could use AGU throttle body (which is the early cable one) with speeduino
