Looking for a big comfy auto truck, idealy retro! (If this is in the wrong section please feel free to move it) I owned a LWB Pajero before and absoloutely loved it. What other options are out there I'm not thinking of? Budgget is probably £3k Ish max. Here's what i've thought of so far: -Another Pajero LWB, Seem to be getting rare and a lot are completely rotten -Isuzu trooper/bighorn, fantastic looking things apparently bnulletproof but id imagine also quite rust prone? -P38 Range rover, apparently money pits? -Range rover classic, id imagine any one worth owning is well out of budget now? -90's disco, TDI or TD5? Again chasis known to disolve? -Land cruiser, again id imagine any one worth owning is out of budget. Any advice/help welcome! I'm guessing late 80's/90's is the age I'm looking for I'm not against anything older or even slightly newer and it will be an everyday vehicle although not my only vehicle so if it requires a bit of maintenance here and there I'm not too worried.

Get yourself a Hilux surf, preferably an SSRG if you can find one.

I once had the misfortune to drive a colleague's diesel Bighorn from just north of Bulls to Tauranga, a distance of 360ish km on a highway that traverses some fairly large variations in altitude. It was dreadful. The automatic seemed confused as to what gear to be in a lot of the time. This has put me off owning one although the problem may have been caused, or at least worsened, by the owner's substitution of hugely tall off-road wheels and tyres for the originals thereby making the gear ratios all wrong. The owner alleged that this vehicle was capable of cracking the ton but the way it drove at normal highway speeds gave me the impression that to do so would be imprudent to say the least. He also alleged that an automatic is superior to a manual in challenging off-road situations. I remain unconvinced. In recent years I have done a couple of 700ish km road trips in a friend's diesel Landcruiser including some fairly rough back country roads and found it to be very capable. Although this vehicle (a five speed manual with low range available in 4wd) is somewhat lacking in top end speed and acceleration on the highway I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would not be averse to owning one myself. The highlight of this particular trip for me was shooting a river crossing at speed to pass a vehicle that had been travelling slowly in front of us for some miles. They took the narrow single lane bridge at crawl speed while encouraged by the owner of the Landcruiser I hit the river rather faster than I thought was prudent and got away with it. We bounced back out onto the road ahead of the other vehicle and roared off laughing like madmen.

I have owned a fair few larger 4WD's. Not 1 was as much fun as this one. This was was a great one. I loved it. It was a 1991 GQ Patrol (Sold as Ford Maverick)

A lot of the comp safari racers use the auto boxes as a matter of course now, I still prefer manuals especially if towing, but fixed behind a big enough engine you’d probably be ok

The Hilux surf I certainly have considered again getting rare to find for sensible prices!
And as much as I agree manual probably makes more sense it's more of a waft around daily and I quite enjoy autos.
I hadn't considered the maverick are they common over here at all in any guise?

you'll get a newer Pajero LWB for your £3k, lots of 3.2 Di's about which are decent things.
not especially retro, but certainly new enough to use less fuel, be less rusty and generally cost less to keep running, but old enough to be cheap to buy.

Jeep Cherokee XJ any good or too small? I’ve had mine for 3 years and something like 20,000 miles and it’s been great. Only reason mine doesn’t fall into the ‘comfy’ category is because it put HD springs on all round, as stock they are lovely. They hustle far better than you’d expect and drive so much like a car but are also pretty capable when you need them to be.

The jeep isn't a bad shout I quite like that!
I think at the moment pajero trooper or Hilux surf are leading the race it's just a case of finding a good one, luckily I'm in no rush to find one

The purists will kill me, but having just gone through a similar Dilemma if we have some form of snow in the south I procured a L200 Animal which the GF promptly claimed as hers for dog walking duties and shopping to save her ‘doors getting smashed in’ ..... make of that what you will..... so I looked at early Cayenne Porsche and X5’s and plumped for a 3 litre petrol 2002 X5 m sport with 90k and plausible history for 1900 quid.
It may not be retro but is reliable, comfy, quick, economical for what it is, quiet and capable with the new boots I have waiting to be fitted.

The jeep isn't a bad shout I quite like that! Parts are easy enough to get in from spain (oddly enough!) and Rock Auto so maintenance isn't as bad as it was. Cooling systems being neglected and rust killed a lot of the pre-facelift XJ's so most of the ones left are good 'un's now but you should easily find a very nice one in budget. The chrome grilles, US markers and tails can easily be imported from Rock Auto and the rubber side cladding removed (just held on with tape) to give it a back-dated 80's retro feel easily enough. The interiors of the pre-facelift are lovely. It's placca wood on the Limited model but it suits is down to the ground, and it's a lovely retro interior with gauges for everything, no oil light, no battery light, just gauges, which makes it feel very retro I love mine.

I recently sold my Pajero because I couldn’t face putting new sills on it for MOT. I’ve replaced it with a Grand Cherokee which blows the Pajero out of the water for comfort! Still working out how to use the 4x4 to its best but it’s great to drive. The interior is like a Jag XJ... it’s sort of like a 90s F Pace 😆😆 The suspension set up is less agricultural than the XJ Cherokee and more like the Pajero.

The suspension set up is less agricultural than the XJ Cherokee and more like the Pajero. Front is by and large the same. It's the rear that probably makes all the difference here where the ZJ uses the Quadralink at both ends rather than the leaf springs of the XJ. Good trucks to be fair, and also getting rarer too sadly! Do you have Command-Trac or Selec-Trac transfer case in yours?

I haven’t got my head round them all yet but I wish I’d got a 2wd one tbh. It’s the only thing I miss from my Pajero. EDIT: scratch that, it’s Quadra-Trac

In the NP transfer cases in the XJ the part time mode is locked centre diff so off-road use, full time is a mode with centre diff for road use
