Another day of rust beating then But first I stuck a few bits back on to the bulkhead that I had cleaned up previously namely the regulator box, horn relay, fuse box & the ID plates - I then masked the engine bay up and cracked on with the rust issues Worked around the screen apertures first with a flapwheel Then the DA with 40's discs to feather edge the paint - its been painted once before in its life over the top of the factory paint which for a 68 year old motor is very good Flapwheel, power file & rotary wire brush treatment required on the internal apertures Then the rear And the external aperture Which holds some minor perforation to the bottom of it Fortunately the rear drip rail is in a sound condition So that's the last of rust on the bodyshell then - hell no there is always more The water ingress from the rear screen has run into the seam under the parcel shelf and made a mess of it So that's a boot lid off job - but quick tip on hinge placement for refitting panels - a bit of masking tape is all it takes Boot lid & hinges removed This I will clean up on Monday - there's also a few areas of minor perforation on the upstand that will need sorting too After a major clean up all the rust effected areas were treated with 2 coats of Hydrate 80 Carrying on where Bill left off - I continued to bolt the engine & gearbox ancillaries back on prior to unit being refitted to the car I cleaned the carbs up and gave them a wash through prior to fitting them Fitted the gearbox mounting (still requires a bit of paint from where I undertook a welded repair on it) and the reverse lamp bracket & switch was fitted / aligned Fitted the front exhaust crossover along with fuel supply to the carbs & the carb linkage - all doable with the engine in the car but very fiddly - a lot quicker process when the engine is out I also put a spanner check on everything on the engine & box has I was unsure if Bill had already done this - he hadn't so just has well I checked

Bodywork 101
Thanks for those little tips, like marking the hinge placement.
Looking so good Chris.
Some days wish I could just sit there and watch, learning.
Sid must be pretty clever too.... 😉

Sid must be pretty clever too.... 😉 Hey Rian - You are always welcome to come sit / watch / chat / drink coffee / tea etc - you don't need my invitation - Sid is has you say very clever - this time of year sub 5 degrees out does not even go anywhere near the workshop - has his breakfast - goes and sits on his favourite chair and wines at me until he gets wrapped up in his blanket On an evening he comes and sits by me observing has I write up the thread

Time to unravel this pile of wires And with excellent resource of the Jowett Car Clubs online technical library I could print off a wiring diagram Had to remove the trafficators from the B pillar in order to disconnect them - I checked them over and tested them but they require a rebuild - spoke to Bill this evening and he has a set in stock that he will send me I then went about threading the centre loom through the roof rail Using the old one to draw the new one through trick It terminates to the rear loom just behind the rear seat / parcel shelf And at the front just behind the dash Drew the interior light supply through which is separate from the harness Then the main harness from the dash & into the engine bay Just need my terminal & clip set which I left in my own Javelin over at the barn - so a trip out is required Then wired the regulator box in - more tomorrow

What sort of paint did you use on the bulkhead? Are these cars done in cellulose?

What sort of paint did you use on the bulkhead? Are these cars done in cellulose? Originally it would have been cellulose - the car has been repainted at some point in a 2 pack direct to gloss paint and that is what I'm using on the engine bay - its a more durable paint finish with better coverage than what cellulose paints offer

Back onto rust busting then Spent a fair few hours chasing the rust out of the boot area along with some welded repairs to rust perforations on the parcel shelf upstand & the bottom of the rear windscreen Bill wanted the rust sorting that was creeping along the rear shroud area between the shroud and the rear wings With both front & rear screen apertures requiring attention along with the quarter glass apertures - plus repairs to the rear inner & outer wings dictates that we are now committed to repainting the roof and the whole rear end of the car - but there is more paint to add to the list yet All rust effected areas were treated with Hydrate 80 I shall apply a second coat in the morning Meanwhile the front section of the fuel line was refitted back in situ with new clips along with the wiring harness also clipped into place and the earths added This is a later Javelin model and the starter solenoid has been relocated hence the solenoid harness requires extending to take this account - I wanted to get this done before the engine & gearbox go back in has it would have been very difficult to undertake once they were fitted - I also tested the headlamp dip switch and its duff so I need to replace that I just need to check the clutch clearance now before refitting the engine & gearbox in the morning More tomorrow

I keep forgetting to hit the like button... on the ther hand in your posts the like button is just about useless as any comment any picture is valueable so I could hit the like button on almost every single entry.
I was looking at the latest installment and thinking to myself "you're not far from a full repaint at this rate...". Will you end up getting to that point or are doors, boot and bonnet lids ok? If not, is the owner going to get stuck with a noticable difference between the freshly painted and the non painted parts?

Alex - Its certainly heading that way - currently roof, rear wings back panel & boot + sills + A, B & D posts - at least 2 doors so about 60% of the car so far - I need to look at the bonnet and see if it will respond to a polish - if not it will be quicker to paint the entire car - but lets see how we get on - more importantly it might not be what the client wants but it would make sense if the next few panels I look at need paint then painting the whole car would be the better route
