Now, make it look like that and you'll win at life for some considerable time Pfffft no disrespect intended towards what I assume is a much admired car with a proud racing record, but it looks like the Cars Movie equivalent of Hide The Pain Harold. I'm already winning at life by not having a car that looks like that. Cuilfail can be done at speed but only very late at night / early hours. But I think Elky was referring more to idle crawling to open up a gap in the traffic and then giving the tunnel some noise, rather than wotting it through the whole thing.

I wouldn't risk matting anything more powerful than a Honda Cub in there what's Matting? I know what a Honda Cub is

I'm northern, and I don't fully understand southern people so forgive me if I'm wrong, but is matting rapidly pressing the pedal into the mat, to achieve rapid acceleration, and in this case a f*cking awesome sound? What's a Honda cub?*
*I do really know.

Matting isn’t a Southern thing. It’s only used by people that are Loco....😂

I don't actually know what matting means in this context. I just assumed a meaning and also assumed it might have been an autocorrect or fat thumb syndrome and was meant to say 'blatting'.
"matting [=] rapidly pressing the pedal into the mat" seems like a good deduction though. If it didn't exist before and was a typo then we might have just witnessed the birth of a new word into the car-head lexicon.
==== Side note:
I think Retrorides should have a Glossary thread, where we gather and explain automotive-related words, slang, colloquialisms and acronyms. Nothing else, no chat... just an ongoing collection of car-head terminology.

This is the Cuilfail tunnel... I have a feeling it's got speed cameras now, because it has been a popular tunnel for blatting - and also matting - in the past and there have been a few prangs over the years. Personally, I prefer Southwick Hill tunnel. Not quite as long but it's much more likely to offer a blat than Cuilfail and being two lane its easier to do so... Southwick tunnel is the source of persistent rumours of a secret military base inside the hill. Some people even claim there's some kind of advanced science or even military UFO research facility under there, accessed via the tunnel. Not sure why people believe that stuff but plenty do. The tunnel is closed off very frequently at night for no known reason. www.theargus.co.uk/news/3615616.southwick-tunnel-is-secret-military-installation/I once decided to ignore the cones and drive through just to see what happened. I got into the tunnel, but was flagged down and turned around. They were clearly just fixing some loose cladding. Nowhere near as exciting as the persistent conspiracy theories.

Nope, you correctly deduce the meaning of "matting it". To be fair, I think I inherited the colloquialism from a Canadian dude who admittedly had a very heavy right foot, so maybe it's one from the Colonies?

Wow!, you got a seriously good deal there!! All those spares!! And he really has done a huge amount of resto work for you, a full strip down of the front end with poly bushes, new floors, new engine & axle - amazing deal.
Deffo looks better without the rear rails on it as well, never realised the bumper had been cut n shut - nice touch.

Deffo looks better without the rear rails on it as well, never realised the bumper had been cut n shut - nice touch. Thanks Mang. It really was a good deal. I paid much less than he had it advertised at because he'd been trying to sell it for a long time to buy a bigger truck and had already bought the bigger truck, so he just wanted it gone. Also there are some acknowledged issues with the car to resolve, so the price was very good, considering it's a running driving car. He's in the business of preparing and restoring classic race cars. Going to his workshops has been amazing... the stuff he's got there is drool-worthy, every time. So it's reasonable to assume he did a decent job on the car given that he was using it for his business and had it for three years. The bumper cut n shut is a good touch but it's a little rough and needs a bit of finishing. It looks like he'd used chrome spray on the front bumper and that has gone off/dull since at the join area, so it's very obvious now. I might need to consider going to a dull silver finish on the bumpers if I want to blend it all away, but the bumpers are way way way down on my to do list so I'm not even thinking about that yet. Got far more important things to be working on with it once I get back to blighty.

When you think of the exchange rate as well it's an even better deal, it would have been $1.45 ish to the £ when imported and we are now down at $1.25 so give or take 15% difference. James

Have you given any though to reappraising your insurance valuation Mr Q? Given that the Breaking Bad sequel hits on Friday next, and the titular title thereof, I imagine El Camino values are going one way and that's up, up, UP!

I love this! The colour really suits the car. Does anyone else see a vague resemblance to the Firenza in the rear 3/4 of this? Yes I was wondering what it reminded me of!

I've worked in Canada a lot over the years, and I gave up trying to appreciate poutine long ago. Canadians always say "oh you just havent had GOOD Poutine yet. Let me take you somewhere where they do the good poutine".
It's never good poutine. There is no good poutine. I think it's all just a joke they play on visitors.
Chips and gravy, yeah, sure. I can dig that. Cheese curds? Why? They add NOTHING to the experience.
Even chip shop chips with chip shop curry sauce is a better national dish than poutine.
Had some pretty awesome food here though, but not that bland cloddy pap.

Ordering car parts from the US to be delivered to an obscure Quebecois hotel is NOT FUN AT ALL.
All of mine arrived, eventually, but one package for Elky went missing.
I had the most maddening TWO HOUR long call to Fedex today to try and find out where the hell my package is. Fedex tracking said they had delivered it Wednesday to "A non Fedex Broker Service".
Hotel desk have said repeatedly "no package here for you". So I waited to see if a local courier service was going to drop it off.
Every evening "no package for you sir"
Got on to Fedex this morning...
Me: Hello I want to know where my package is here's my tracking number
Fedex: Oh yah, ookay that was delivered
M: Ah, no, because it isn't here
F: Ookay well it says delivered
M: Yes but it says delivered to a local broker. They haven't delivered it to me. Who is the local broker?
F: OOkay yah so it was delivered Wednesday
M: Yes, but to whom. I have the name A.Talya on the tracking records but nobody by that name works in the hotel
F: Oh, so you want to send a package to a hotel sir?
M: What? No... I'm waiting for a package and it didn't arrive. I want to know what a "non Fedex Clearance Broker" is
F: Oh OOkay sir so you are a NonFedex Clearnace broker?
M: WHAT? NO... I'm the customer and I want to know where my package went
F: OOh yah ookay sir that was delivered on Wednesday
M: NOT TO ME. WHO IS THE BROKER?
F: I don't know sir. Did you want to send a hotel?
M: I WANT TO KNOW WHERE MY PACKAGE IS. WHO DID YOU DELIVER IT TO?
F: I'm sorry but we don't know that sir.
M: You don't know where you delivered it?
F: No sir. It came to Canada sir, from the USA. Are you English sir?
M: What? Yes, why?
F: Because I will have to refer you to International shipping sir
M: WHAT? WHY? I'M IN CANADA. SAME AS YOU YOU POUTINE MUNCHING MOOSE.
F: Did you want to send a hotel to a package in England sir?
M: RAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGE. RRRAAAAGGGGGE. SWEARS AND SMASHING.
F: Can I have your non Fedex Clearance Broker's address sir?
M: THAT'S WHAT I'M ASKING YOU FOR
(for two hours, maybe longer)
Then after all that, the hotel staff who have swore blind all week that they hadn't had the package, and who had been trying to help me work out who/what the "nonFedex Clearance Broker" could be, whilst all the time telling me that no A.Talya worked at the hotel, just called my room and said "A.Talya just found your package, it's on the front desk".
