Great pictures, as always, D to the Biz For me, the Revival is a bunco booth of lies and tricks. It looks gorgeous... sights and sounds and smells... and it entices you in with the promise of wonders undreamt-of and exotic prizes. Yet you know under the gold leaf and garish colours, behind the wurlitzer, whirlwind sound and vision, it's just sawdust and gesso and illusion. Every year I have an @spookytim2 "never again" moment and every year I go again and wallow in being lied to, revel in the thin veneer that the world is a beautiful place, immerse myself in the glorious lie If ever a picture summed up the Revival, for me it's this one Karussel by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beautiful ladies in wonderful old garb riding a genuinely antique fairground ride and smiling in the guttering gold of a late autumn sun for the sheer joie de vivre of it. But they're actors, paid by The Duke of Richmond and Gordon's theatre sponsorship scheme to sit on the carousel, to make it seem glamorous, to entice in even the most flinty-hearted of nay-sayers. They're whirling in ever-decreasing circles, going nowhere. And if ever there was a metaphor for the whole sorry of it, there you go From someone whos never been, I think thats the whole point of it, on TV it appears to be a fully immersive event, with all the bells and whistles, all slapped on as thinly or thickly as possible. Its not just about the racing (which is awesome) its about reviving the golden time of Goodwood, all the fashion and glitz and glamour of it. Everything about it, and your post, makes me more determined than ever to go next year.

It's unquestionably an amazing event and every petrolhead should experience it at least once. Once you've done it a few times though you maybe start wishing for just a simple straight-up race meeting without all the fancy dress and thousands of Tarquins and Jocastas plundering hospitality. But then, I guess it'd just be the Silverstons Classic then. Or the Member's Meeting. But yeah, definitely worth a visit. Just maybe not every year

If it's the racing then try the Castle comber Autumn festival. It's like a mini revival good classic racing and none of the glitz. OK you're not going to get a £400M grid but there's always a good spread of cars. autumn classic

But yeah, definitely worth a visit. Just maybe not every year We make sure to go on occasions when the weather is inevitably terrible - that's why the weather was perfect this year. Watching some bits and pieces via Facebook though lead to the rather strange feeling this time of seeing a rather special car on track in which I spent some quality time a few months ago. Not something I'd have ever imagined was a likely occurrence.

I was really really lucky this year and had a friend who took me along to Goodwood on friday as part of his 50th birthday. It was a totally different world than i know ( i turned up in a mk3 Escort) but my god it was brilliant!! i saw 2 Jags crash although i know thats not what its about but, the drivers really are pushing these cars like they used to. Its worth the trip and to walk around the pits was something else. will try to add pics at some point. I really want to go to the Goodwood event in April from seeing previous years videos.

When there are 364 days between one visit & another, how hard can it be Dunno, maybe you just have a high boredom threshold? Or maybe because my opinion is just different to yours? To be brutally honest, I could happily live without the whole fancy dress nonsense because I'm not five years old. I could do without a programme written like a fake washing power advert or like a World Cup revue written by someone who previously wrote Boys Own comics circa 1956. I can do without the hordes of people who know nothing about classic cars and just want to dress up whilst chasing Insta likes. I could live without the stalls selling fur coats and Barbour jackets and hats and anything else made from what was once a living animal and preferably still has the face left on it and the ears poking through the fur. I could do without the coutre outlets and hairdressers outnumbering the car stands. It's too busy, too crowded, too shallow, too much for not "my sort" of people. It makes me angry seeing tools strutting around in military uniform complete with honours when they've never even served. I believe a dress uniform is something that should be worn by someone who's earned the right, not someone who rented it from a costumers. I love the cars and the bikes and the classic racing. It's superb. And the fashionista vibe is fun for about maybe two hours. But because I'm not a simpleton the novelty wears off really fast and TBH I'm just as happy watching the racing on the live feed because at least that way I can see it without some toff fool being in the damn way while explaining to Chloe why the red one is faster than the green one. It's just hard work nowadays. The Members Meeting features the same cars (and because it's Goodwood, they're literally the same cars year after year) but without the ridiculous crush and without having to pretend you're part of a fashion parade that never existed. I wouldn't even mind so much if it was period-accurate. The Revival has just become one of those things that looks infinitely better on Instagram or forum threads than it actually does in real life and the fakeness of it bores me However, for positivity tax, a picture of the stuff I like about the Revival. If you can still find a moment's space amongst the heaving multitude ERA fettlation by Nick Liassides, on Flickr

The thing for me is I got bored of the pomp and glamour side show of The Revival many years back. For my first few visits I'd do the dressing up, look at all the entertainment and take a trip round olde Tescos, chuckle at the SU carburetor people 'working' in the carburetor shop who don't even know what a carburetor does, and all that entertaining stuff.
But after a few years that gets repetitive and a bit queasy. So then I stopped dressing up and I spent my time on the very far side of the track between St Mary's and Lavant Corner which is a really good place to watch the races from as you're an arm's length from the cars with no visual obstacles and theres hardly anyone else there.

I get it. You would never find me in fancy dress, and I can see that once the novelty has worn off youd rather ignore it and just concentrate on what you went there for, the cars and the racing. I guess its a victim of its own success, its got so popular that its ended up a little over-inflated. Its also the main reason why J40 fetch soooooo much money now. Still awesome.

It is an awesome thing Yeah, J40s are ludicrous money now. To me that race is one of the most awkward spectacles I've ever seen. Stand near the paddock and overhear the parents and it's ... well, it's just queasy. Mind you, I suppose it's understandable they get carried away; after all, it's one of the very few times they get to see little Mungo or Jemima during term time what with dorm visiting rules being so strict. And you want them to grow up with the correct spirit of competitiveness and not disgrace the old school tie by showing weakness in public no matter how much ritual humiliation you subject them to

If I had enough money, id buy a J40 and plonk my nephew in it. I WOULD be one of those people, my sister WOULD be one of those parents, and my nephew WOULD (no doubt) make sure that the car would NOT be straight by the end of that race.

That whole J40 thing they do gets me as close as I ever want to get to planning a terrorist incident. Never sit me in an idling combine harvester in sight of that little spectacle.

There I was thinking I was alone in my current Revival grumpiness. There must be at least a couple of Glam Cabs needed to run us all back home now.

So basically in a nutshell, what the last few comments are saying is, get rid of the fun fair, the trading stalls, the costumes, the themed stuff (World Cup, Italian Job etc etc) so do that then & it’s a race meeting. Ok there may be some nice classic cars or would there? Would they turn up if it was ‘just a race day’ I think not in many cases. I don’t get it, if you don’t want to dress up, then don’t, if you don’t like the fun fair, don’t go to it (I didn’t but it didn’t spoil my day, how could it) if your not interested in stalls selling fur coats, don’t go to them (I didn’t but it didn’t spoil my day, how could it) if you don’t like World Cup booklets, don’t read it (I didn’t but....you know the rest) If you don’t like all of that, just sit at the side of the track, or in the paddock & have a great day watching what I assume you DO like otherwise you wouldn’t be here.
Or perhaps just go to Mallory, Cadwell, Thruxton etc & see the same old same.

You just re-iterated my points.... with one point missing though: the planes and helicopters now place severe restrictions on free movement since the Shoreham airshow crash, making it near impossible - in my experience - to enjoy your day how you want to enjoy it. In short, I love the event. In theory it's my most favourite car-related experience ever. But I've started feeling like I'm getting mugged for the last few times I've been, and I'm hopeful that some tweaking might occur to things that gives me the enthusiasm to go along onc emore and come away feeling like I've had an amazing experience, as I did for at least 12 years before the Shoreham crash happened.

Some really interesting opinions on here (and great pics, too, thanks Dan). I love the Revival. It's a nonsense, much of it, but it's nice to immerse yourself in the silliness of dressing up, enjoying an expensive drink and watching some fantastic cars racing on the absolute limit on what is, many seem to forget, a fast and tricky circuit. Yes, there are hoo-rays and hangers-on, but I've found that, in the thick of it, there's a great core of enthusiasts who want to have fun while enjoying really good racing. The Settrington Cup was cute, just once, and I'm not overly fussed by the corporate stuff. I have met some great people there over the years (including my missus), but I totally get that it's not for everyone. I'll upload some of my pics when I get a tick. ETA - To comment on the crowding mentioned, above, that's a bit annoying at times. Queues for bars and bogs are inevitable with the success of the event. I love the aircraft, even as static displays (when did you last see a Messerschmitt up close?).
