I've found 400 grit emery paper is best as long as you keep going the same direction. Quick go with red scotchbrite after brightens them up. Worth a try, should have got some of that too. Should have fetched the rails home with me could have gone in garage now haha. Cheers

Sat in front of telly is best for mindlessly cleaning those sort of bits.

superb progress, looks lush Cheers! There's no way it's going back in a grotty engine bay haha. Slippery slope curse word I've been there - good luck it's really hard to know where to stop but you have to draw a line

I'm not talking full wire tuck and smooth off the bay or owt daft like that. But I can't stick it back in th bay that's covered in grinding death and radweld splatters and Christ knows what else.. Maybe just pull the loom back attack it with the steam cleaner and tfr and maybe give it a brushed on coat of black (can't believe I said brushed haha) Cheers

Just for those who may not have read 92 pages of my random waffle bad pics and general ramblings, just found a couple pics of how it looked when it came out. It's definitely looking better if nowt else 😂😂 Hence the reason I'm so smug about how it's turning out Cheers

Nice ! shame about the over spray on the filter though ... Don't haha. It's literally an old one that I used to stop paint getting in where it shouldn't after id washed everything out... But I don't want to fit a new one til it's back in car for risk of damaging it fitting the engine (it's bugging me massively tho haha) Cheers

Well as expected I never saw the car yesterday. Left for work at 7 got home from Peterborough (not Cambridge like I thought) at 6 and achieved the sum total of f all! Complete and utter waste of a day in every sense of the word (wel no go into that, that's a moan for a forklift page or Mumsnet or summat) haha... So after that I wanted to get somethin done today.. made a start on the fuel rails again. Bought some fine wire wool over the weekend and started with that. Quickly got bored and tried a little polishing wheel in my knock off Dremel.. it worked ok. There not mint tbh they could probably have done with wet flatting to get every trace of pitting off them. But for something you can barely see theyl do. Also got the injectors back in too. For comparison right rail was "nearly done" left hadn't been touched. Next to go back on the throttle body. I said before theres far too many fiddly bits an pre set bits for me to want to take it all apart to paint. If time comes I want to I've a spare in garage I can do.. started with it looking positively crusty tho Using wire wool, little multitool with a wire brush in and some autosol got it looking presentable. Oh. And another new gasket 🤣 Not particularly exciting but also got the afpr back on. And the braided line to the fuel pressure sensor. Starting to look a bit more finished now Taking on board what was said about relief cuts in the manifolds grabbed some 1mm slitting discs and relieved them 😂.. No excuse now then. Grabbed the last 2 new gaskets out of the full headset I bought and got the spinny thing chucked back up front! I'm not sure if I mentioned it before. But I despise heat wrap ðŸ˜. Also got the oil feed on and with that called today done!! I need to have a search on eBay for some little silicone blanking caps but I'm struggling to find em, not sure if its my phone or the search I'm putting in or what. But cant find owt small enough to cap those little pipes on the throttle body (there 4mm o.d).. I've also realised the crank bolt isn't tight (hence the masking tape with loose written on the belt).. but I can't tighten it without the clutch/flexplate on... but now the screamer pipe is in the way of said crank bolt! So that's going to have to come back off first. Anyways hopefully sneak an hour tomorrow If it goes to plan. Cheers!

Well the last thing I said yesterday was "hopefully get an hour if tomorrow goes to plan"... It didn't go to plan. Not even slightly.. Spent most of the day getting this lot ready Which involved me getting soaked to skin in the freezing cold rain... Then had a load more racking turn up (the new workshop that seemed massive this time last year is starting to feel slightly full already 🙈).. so spent rest of day building that 😠Wanted to do something. Anything. So chucked the dipstick tube back in with a new seal. This isn't ground breaking progress unfortunately... Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Cheers

So it's not been a brilliant week for progress. But we're still making some and I'm still not having to work outside in the dark and rain using a bedside lamp like I was this time last year. So I'd call that a win 😂 Didn't get a solid run at anything yesterday but snuck what I could when I could.. starting with plugs and coil packs going back in.. Now if you've been along for all 93 pages of waffle you may remember me buying the little brass extenders to go on the plugs as I wasn't sure the coil packs were making a brilliant contact. The top of the plug is exactly same length down the plug tube as the bottom of the spring in the coil pack. And ideally it wants to be "on" a bit further. Unfortunately the plugs are the type you can't unscrew the tops so that idea never happened. Problem is the little lug on the cam covers stop the coil going down any further. (Was never meant to run coil packs the lugs normally mount the plug lead covers).. Figured best way was to shave 5mm ish off the coil mount where it fouled the cam cover. So they can still be mounted yet will sit further down the plug tubes. I'm waffling but a few pics should make it clearer.. Standard Then modified And fitted. They make a much more positive "clunk" as the rubbers stretch over the plugs now and will hopefully be making plenty of contact on the plug! Rinse and repeat 6 times (there's no little lug on the front two cylinders so they sit further down anyways) job done The little silicone blanking whatsits turned up for the throttle body. Along with the one under the throttle body that used to have the cam cover breather going to it, so chucked them on too Now we were reaching the stage where I needed it off the stand an back on the trolley so that was next. Also needed to get the gearbox adaptor plate back on but not without a fresh coat of black haha. Oh and chucked a new sump plug and seal on since I'm posh 🤣 Looked a bit scary sat up there so strapped it down with the engine mounts to be safe Needed to get crank pulley bolt tightened down (181 ftlb is tight on your own haha) so needed clutch and flexplate on to lock the crank.. but because I'm basically a child I left a new note behind the flex plate. I really hope I never see this again 😠Chucked the turbo oil drain back on.. 19mm i.d pipe and a nice run down hill. The amount of people who have grief with smoke cus they don't run a big enough drain makes me wonder how they ever get by in life (there's a lad in our group chat that was adamant his 10mm o.d pipe was big enough, smoked like mad, rebuilt the turbo, fitted oil restrictor in Inlet, still smoked, fitted a big enough drain and fixed it 🙈) Needed to get the exhaust and downpipe back on. But there was a bit I wasn't happy with.. way back when when I made the bit that runs under the manifold on the left hand bank, I had to weld the 90s on the end of the pipe upside down under the car using safety squints instead of a mask as there was no room. So while it was off figured I'd unwrap it. Smarten any welds and rewrap. As it happens my safety squints must have bee alright cus there were only 2/3 tiny pin holes that had been blowing but I'm much happier now. Forgot to take pics of it unwrapped but weve seem my welding before 🤣 Did I mention. I despise heat wrap ðŸ˜... Finally as I left it yesterday it's virtually ready to go back in.. the exhaust isn't tight cus the ratchet strap is in the way of tightening it all up. But I'm off work Monday/Tuesday to use a few of my holiday days and do Xmas stuff with Mrs n kids, and I didn't want to leave it not fastened to the trolley for all that time.. I also opened the bonnet on the car for first time in a long time. Kinda wish I hadn't haha. There's no way my shiny engine is going back in there.. plan on getting the car outside at some point next week and giving it a good clean. If it doesn't come up to a acceptable standard I'm going to have to paint it.. I know it sounds bit rough but has anyone had experience of brush painting summat like this and what should I be using (I've no desire to try and mask all that lot up) Anyways that's were I'm up to. Work depending il hopefully get some more done next week when I'm back Cheers

Looking good on the progress stakes there For the engine bay cleaning, use a decent steam cleaner if you have one (but don't put the lance too close to anything) and most of it should tidy up quite easily being a "modern" car Always found a dab of petrol brushed over is pretty good at removing stubborn marks...

We've got a big diesel powered steam cleaner at work plus some nasty tfr stuff, petrol and all manner of other stuff for cleaning.. my concern is although a lot of that crud is baked on rad weld from its various kettle impressions that should come off, there's quite a bit of paint missing/scratched off from all the times engines been in as out an fact it's 20+ year old.. il have to see what it looks like for a clean and go from there. And cheers. I've not made the progress I wanted but definitely feel like I'm over the hill with it
