Well order went in today. Got parts coming from the UK, USA and Lithuania of all placees. Wel not talk about the cost ðŸ˜ðŸ¤· I've got everything right down to some uprated oil filters and a new sump plug on way and everything in-between. So once I've some parts/the engine back the only thing stopping it going together is time. And we all know how much of that I have spare at minute haha.
Fingers crossed for a real update soon

First part of a very big parts order came today... 1.3mm MLS headgaskests! A lot happier when I turn the boost up and factory fitment to the later vvti engines... We won't talk about what they cost. Or what rockauto had them for ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ but you live and learn.. Speaking of rockauto my giant order has been shipped and should be here Monday!! Now I just need a block. Gave stanwoods a quick courtesy call and it's in the que.. I knew it would be so I'm not overly supprised. I'm actually quite excited about cracking on. Can gaurantee summat will go wrong before then tho.. Fingers crossed on the resurrection haha. Cheers

Dunno, I usually get one per box. So if I do one order that ships from 3 locations I’ll get 3 magnets. This is about half of mine, I found another pile in a different et drawer after I took this pic!

Just ordered something from Rockauto, I like the fact they give the complete price so no surprises from the Royal Mail demanding monies. Not sure how long it'll take but half the price of the same (used!) item over here. Lets see if i get a fridge magnet, its nearly Chritsmas that time of year after all........
Sorry for the C word

Well what I didn't realise was that my massive order is infact made up of 6 seperate orders from across the states..I assumed they would all end up in one place then be shipped together...
What's actually happened is its coming in 6 seperate parcels, some with one bit in. Some with loads. And more amazingly first one has turned up this morning!!! Less than 3 full days from tullson Arizona to sunny Sheffield! That literally boggles my mind haha
And what is it. I know the excitements killing me too..
Front oil seal 🙈🤣🤣 but I needed it so least it's here..
Can't do much without the block or my actual big order. But once I've got it back least I can crack on (hopefully summat like caught up at work so can make a start cleaning stuff up)..
Cheers for the rockauto heads up. So far so good (no fridge magnet tho 🤣)
Cheers

For future reference, your basket has truck icons with letters on which show which location they'll come from. When searching for parts, if it's got a truck next to it then you already have something in your basket from that location, so I think getting that part is cheaper on combined postage.

It's all a learning process this.. I'm not sure if I'd have gotten away without paying the duty too since it's coming in 6 lots and none of them are over£135 individually.. but we live and learn. So something I've missed happened today. Something I've not done in months but has really fired me up to crack on! I've actually gotten my hands dirty 🤣 (well they get dirty every day working on big daft trucks, but this dirt was authentic lexus dirt, the best kind haha).. let's not get too carried away tho.. Got another delivery this morning, actually 3, making 4 of the 6 parcels I've got coming... I'm so impressed with rockauto, 3 and 4 days from the states door to door! How can you not be impressed by that.. so what's in the box.. Well technically boxes... We've got a full cambelt and water pump set with the correct spring loaded tensioner, full top half gasket set, core plugs, sump gasket and most importantly..... Fridge magnets 🤣🤣 Didn't technically need the gasket "set" as I've already bought MLS head gaskets.. but was cheaper to buy a set than individual. And because I'm basically a northern Martin Lewis before the end of the day I've sold the standard gaskets and got some pennies back in the pot! Result. Now I've still got no engine. Was warned it could be a couple of weeks, called midweek and its in the que, so not a lot I can do there. But there is stuff I can be doing.. Now this engine is going to be "new (ish)" new seals new gaskets new bearings new rings etc. So there's no reason for it to leak oil.. that being said the old version hadn't read the script and it was fairly minging, and because I just wanted it in it didn't get much in the way of a clean before I fitted it. I'm not going for a concourse build let's not be silly. But it would be nice for it to look smart when I goes back in. So with no block and a couple hour spare at work (I've literally grafted none stop for past as long as I can remember building new trucks and God knows what else) made a start on cleaning bits up.. Front cover/oil pump housing (didn't want this getting "wet" inside and certainly don't want it anywhere near the sandblaster.. definitely better but the ally is stained from years of grime and oil leaks Also made a start on cleaning all the sections of sump up. Forgot to take the after pics so imagine this less grimey and without 30 years of muck on it 🤣 Fealing inspired even brought some bits home to out through the little blaster.. managed to get kids down, Mrs at work, baby monitors on (like deja vu this except kids are now 2 and 3 haha) managed to grab an hour of me time in garage.. I must be keen now cus it's a while since I've done owt like that!! Now all the bits I've done look better. But not mint.. il either call it done at that with em, or give em a coat of silver just to freshen everything up while it's going back together.. will also stop the bare ally corroding so bad since it won't be used for a while. Hopefully il get my engine back next week and can make a start on actual assembly. But I'm certainly feeling more positive about the whole job now! I even had a read back through this thread to remind me what I've done (who remembers the missing boost saga hah).. turns out I've done a fair bit haha. It's not much. But work was done. And I'm calling that an update! Cheers

Probably worth stripping and cleaning the oil pump and giving it a proper wash out inside they tend to get a bit gunked up.

Yeah I didn't want to take it apart until I'd found a workshop manual for it.. didn't want to have to start reshimming stuff and losing bits but it's literally the simplest thing inside so will whip it apart and give it a good clean!

So made a bit more progress today.. sadly my last 2 parcels from rockauto appear to be on extended leave at Stansted... That been said still done a bit. First off tho needed to do summat about the headlights on the daily, Mrs is going to work in the dark now and she may aswell have two candle taped to the front of the car 🤣. they have always seemed a bit naff not helped by how much they've discoloured over last 12 month.. so armed with my mates polisher, various grades of wet n dry and very limited knowledge. Set too.. Hard to photo (and there in wrong order) but precisely a million percent better.. whilst I was at it I've never liked the high beam, it's seemed a bit off a bit discoloured and recently beam pattern has been all over shop. Whipped a bulb out to see what I needed and we'll... That won't be helping 🤣🤣 Some kinda naff aftermarket thing.. thrown in the nearest bin and replaced with a pair of normal ones you can now see where your goin!! Brownie points earned haha. Back to proper car, wanted to carry on my tarting up mission. Firstly the lower sump. This bits steal and looked a bit worse for wear. Quick rub over with the da then rust remody on the crusty bit (it's not leaking at all just were paints been scraped off, don't worry it was thoroughly washed after).. couple of coats of gloss black. Jobs jobbed. While I was on a cleaning up mission got the mid part of the sump fettled some more..using a wire wheel (that's sole purpose seemed to have be sticking bits of wire in my forearm and neck) got the mating surfaces mint and gave it all another general going over. Will get it in etch tomorrow then painted same time as block.. speaking of the block... Got a call off stanwoods.. left a voicemail to call back so nervously phoned fearing the worse.. Well I needn't have worried the block survived the cooking. It's been decked but only had 3 thou took off. All the waterways are now clear and it's got a fresh hone and gapped rings!! I can almost feel 20 psi in the future 🤣🤣 (no I won't do that,.... Will I) 🤷 Collected after work, parted with some pennies and feel proper fired up ready to go! Minty fresh!! Plan is get it on the stand, give it a thorough steam clean down to get rid of any oily residue. Then paint the block (and lather the bores in wd40 or summat to stop it going rusty) It might not be a lot but the fact I sacrificed my dinner break and used it as car time means I must be keen to crack on haha. More soon hopefully Cheers!!

ATF is king for the bores. Pressure washer with TFR feed and hot water or steamer if you've got access to one it all off, particular focus on the oil galleries obviously, then dry it all with a airline (try and find somewhere clean that drains to stand it on off the floor, a clean pallet or a sack barrow laid on the floor works well) then wipe the bores out with ATF on a rag. It'll stop them rusting as you'll also be amazed at how dirty they still are.

What about the head mating surface? Same on them a wipe with ATF to stop the corrosion? It's ally obviously but the liners aren't . Also while an expert is on hand. What about "running it in".. obviously it will have new big ends, mains etc. And the rings. I know I'm a long way off but my plan was fire it up a few times with cheap 10/40 then drop the oil... Fill it with more cheap 10/40 and a fresh filter and do maybe a couple hundred miles steadyish... Then drop it again and fill it with the made on the moon 10/60 and a decent filter? Sound about right? Owt I should be doing? I've ordered some proper assembly oil stuff (I never normally bother just wipe everything with oil as I put it together but tbf it's normally for work so is only a few days til it's ran, this could be a few months)... Cheers

Best thing for running in is usually semi synthetic oil, and not fannying about like miss Daisy at low throttle openings With my Cologne V6, I was told drive it normally, no wide open throttle, and no more than 3/4 max rpm. Engine oil change at 500miles, and away you go. That's now done 90k without a strip down or oil pressure issues Also hear lots of engine builders/tuners say about going for big throttle openings, and coasting down using engine braking. But thats a tad tricky for me with an autobox

I don't bother putting anything on ally, as long as its properly dry then its fine. I forgot to mention - make a thread cleaner out of a old head bolt and clean all the head bolt threads out (bit of WD40 or similar to lube) then make sure you give them a really good steam out. Also on any sealant using mating faces use a drill bit that fits between the threads (M6 is 4.5mm,M8 is 6.5mm etc) on any blind holes to make sure the sealant isn't stuck in the bottom. If you leave any in you run the chance of either stripping threads or breaking the casting. Do this lot before cleaning.
My running in routine is pretty much as above. Just try and make sure it runs properly first time (check for spark and fuel and timing before running it if poss) and any issues shut it off to fix. Worst thing to do on a new engine is either a misfire or left idling for ages.

Just wondered if my general theory was summat like right Luckily I've got 3 pedddles and a stick so engine braking isn't a problem lol. Cheers
