Just pulled the oil cap off the Mgf while it was running. It definitely didn't do that... Some general air movement, but not noticeable puffs. Good luck with the engine change! We'll all be timing you He has secretly started the strip down and isnt telling anyone til he has had a good head start I can assure you I'm sat with a beer watching Moto GP. Haha. I've got day off work tomorrow and so has Mrs so I'm done til Tuesday.. (I've still got to ok it with my boss, but il make it in his interest to let me do it there)

We'll all be timing you Yeah I've had filler cap off plenty of stuff before while it was running, and never had blow by like that (other than an mx5 turbo in a past life that melted a piston).. come to think of it that hateful Tiguan I palmed off last year breathed like this... And that was scrap too 😂

Well here's the update we thought was coming... Limped it into work this morning it's not a happy bunny! Got to work let it cool down then started pulling plugs out one by one... Car had been parked ten minutes and the floor looked like something of British heritage had been parked there for years.. it would appear every seal and gasket that could be under pressure. Is under pressure... And leaking Worked my way through all 8.. all averaged around 160/170 psi... Except the 2nd from the front on the right hand bank... Or number 3 as lexus called it.. Oh cock... Struggled to make 130psi.. least it is making something so pistons not smashed to bits.. did notice that when I took the plug out of that hole, it stopped puffing out of the oil filler. So weve definitely found the dead one... Had a chat with my boss, told him I'd be forever in his debt if he let me do it at work in between jobs next pic should give you a clue what he said... Yep. The hover car has returned... Said id start the clock on strip down time.. waiting for some parts that DHL have lost for work, cracked straight on.. From compression test to ready to lift out. Hour n half! Not too bad at all. Think it may take longer to fit the new one tho haha. Can't get the engine out today cus the engine crane isn't here and can't drive the forklift over the pit so that's tomorrow job! Get new engine down to work and start the swap over.. I said I wouldn't be beaten. And the V7 turbo won't beat me haha Cheers

Well at least you know what the problem is and what the answer is. Also, you now have a spare engine to rebuild for when 550bhp isn't enough and you want to turn the boost up some more.

It's probably just me but I'd have pulled the affected head of the that side - but that's mainly because I'd want to know the reason before I dropped another lump in there

I would be lieing if I said that thought hadn't crossed my mind... Nice little winter project for me. Little rebuild freshen up top to bottom, new bearings MLS gaskets, etc etc. If not for more power but for piece of mind.

And me asking too much of it.. tbf I can't take the heads off with engine in car (it's that tight) so regardless it's got to come out. I may whip the head off while it's out. And check I've not had an injector go down or owt daft. Cheers

regap rings for the new one matt? Possibly...possibly not..the problem is to gap the rings its major strip down. New head gaskets, sump gaskets, studs etc etc.. won't refit a used cambelt so there's that to factor in too.. I was thinking of just stickin this one back in but with the boost reigned in a bit (so say a maximum of 1 bar) and run it as is. Then build a lairy one if that's not enough... Tbh I have the engine sat here. Bought and paid for a long time ago. I can't really afford to spend a grand on rebuild bits at minute. And I don't want to miss the summer. I'd rather run it at a safe 450bhp and use it. Than build it to take 600 (which is what it would do with MLS gaskets and arp studs) but not get it back on the road for 3 month. Plus I think my boss may (read that as definitely will) have face on if it's sat there all that time haha

ah fair enough , you could also run a simple water inj on it to keep cylinder temps down too . i just had a pressure switch , water jet , and a windscreen washer pump flowing through a dashboard operated flow valve i could adjust flow with ,it worked well on the tvr . you feed the water tank with boost pressure to keep flow going on boost.

Matt, as you're no doubt aware rule of thumb 250 bhp x 10 psi = 425 bhp.
Run the spare engine at that. Enjoy and use the car while rebuilding this engine as you've suggested.
That's the way to go.
Even at 400 + bhp you might get hacked off losing traction too often and buying tyres.
Who knows but there's only one way to find out...

Aye I'd definitely reign the boost in a bit on the new engine and rebuild the broken one for more power. It'll have nipped the ring land, most of the modified turbo engines I do are that type of damage. Stock pistons with stock ring gaps aren't ideal for turbo applications, usually the janky old worn out curse word are the ones that survive.

Yeah.... very good point raised..... engine in better condition/less wear might actually be at greater risk of ring/piston problems as they have less spare room for heat expansion....

Bad news; semi-borked engine. Good news; nice positive way forward! Will be following with interest, as ever.

Yeah I think the best plan is run it slightly safer and just enjoy it for the summer. There's no point chasing massive numbers on unopened unknown engines.. some will laugh it of and be fine. Some clearly aren't as I've proved haha

Yeah that was my thought especially since the new one has done half the miles of the old one.. everything should be a bit tighter which isn't necessarily a good thing adding boost and chasing numbers.. Plus like you say if I build the broken one, I know I'm starting from scratch with summat that I know works

Well luckily (or unluckily depends how you look at it) DHL have managed to cock up royally with some parts for work.. only delivered one of 2 parcels and the bits in parcel 2 are now on back order.. so why is this relevant... Well I couldn't do the job I'm waiting to start without all the bits, so had a hour spare this morning to crack on.. Took the borrowed engine crane down to work (mine is a bit of a death trap at best tbh) and got stuck in.. I'd left it just sat ready to lift out so in no time at all we were hear! Still makes me laugh how much engine I've got in such little space Started pulling bits off. Starting with the very tasty clutch as I really don't want to damage that.. Had an hour pulling bits off and inspecting stuff as I went. Also started making a list of gaskets and bits il need... Not particularly exciting but this was progress.. Also discovered I'd had a water leak from the front water bridge into the valley... Completely invisible with the inlet on. Glaringly obvious with it removed. Will be sure to check this on the new one. Explains where the coolant was going it was slowly losing tho.. Sadly had to carry on doing real work then. But it's a stage now where I can swap bits from one straight onto the other.. Got home from work, Mrs is on nights, kids went straight to bed (they must know I've got problems with the "Choo Choo car") haha. Time to find my spare engine.. now I'm not saying garage has turned into a dumping ground... But I'm ashamed to say it's in there somewhere Found it! Low mileage early thick rod engine. Almost as if I planned on needing it haha Managed to get it into the van on my own which was a lot harder than I imagined... Also grabbed my spare j160 gearbox to swap over... The one in the car has always whined. It's also leaking on the rear seal. Figured while I'd got it all out AGAIN I'd swap the box for the known good one and keep whiny box as a spare.. While I was on a mass clear out I've got rid of my original 1g engine. I tried to sell it complete, tried selling parts even tried giving it away.. managed to sell 60/70 quid in bits off it and while I was feeling productive figured that could go too... We have a decent local scrap bloke with a hiab on his truck who will put a few quid through your letterbox if you leave him a decent pile.. tbh it saves me taking it to scrap yard so id call that a win.. What's the odds my trolley disapears to Anyways. Were down but we're not out! Time to start stripping the loom of the new engine and getting all my one off bits swapped over! Fingers crossed for some more soon! Cheers

Were was I? Oh yeah that 5 minute job of swapping engines over haha. Managed to sneak a bit of time on it today in-between real work, was conscious I'm slowly taking over the workshop with my scrap (I mean luxury race car parts). So left the engine in the back of the van to start stripping bits off.. The pics aren't very exciting tbh. But they show just how much extra "stuff" I don't need. Acres of plastic and vac pipes and God knows what else... I forgot how much rubbish there is to strip off them! Once I'd got it on the floor stripped the inlet manifold off so I could get the last of the loom out, I sold my original loom/ECU/maf relatively easily so least that will be some money back in the pot.. Was greeted with a bit of a suprise in The valley of the v... What's that joke about were do squirrels keep there nuts?? Apperently in V8s Will take the garage hoover to work with me next week and get rid of those haha. Things started to go a bit wrong at this point.. the plug tubes are very deep on these. At some point in this engines life, it's had a set of new plug leads.. and without being rude there the cheapest nastiest rubbish I've ever seen... Attempted to pull the leads off and pretty much everyone of them broke half way down the plug tube!! leaving the rubber, the clip and half a plug lead stuck down the hole. Figured I'd pull the remains out with some long nose pliers, figured wrong! Very wrong they just crumbled... What ensued was an hour of faffing breaking bits off and generally messing around with a pick and some tweesers and tiny long nose pliers. And many swear words. With that done (and wanting to hoover the plug tubes out before I remove the plugs incase there's any remnants of plastic down the holes) gave everything a quick check over.. nothing too serious, cam covers are weeping like they always do, so il reseal them while it's out. Also spotted a core plug on the back of the head leaking that would be virtually impossible to swap while the engine is in the car. So will replace them too. Plan for next week is to compression check it just to be sure it's as healthy as it's meant to be. Then start the rebuild. There's talk of me altering the drivers side Manifold while it's out, so I can run a proper alternator and Ultimately fit electric power steering. But I don't want the car to be off the road an age. So wel see. And if you wondered how much rubbish I wouldn't need of this engine... That much 😂😂 Cheers
