Early start today to pick up the XJ from Birmingham, First, train into Manchester.... Then over to the coach stop for a ride down the M6 £8, can't be bad! Picked up from the station and chauffeured back to the sellers house to exchange the necessary paperwork etc and my new steed awaits to waft me home. Brief stop at David Manners because it was on the way home. The M6 had other ideas though ... The car performed like a champ though and never missed a beat in stop, stopped, stopped start traffic Eventually the traffic thinned and the Jag could get into it's stride, love the bonnet buldge. (note: I am passing a lorry here, not hogging lane 2!) It's got some vibration through the wheel at 70 but once you push through it it's fine. First job on the to do list then. More to follow including some interesting finds inside the car.

Carrying on from yesterday It's always interesting to see what the previous owner has left for you in the car. MkX here is your bullion, well sort of. It had been stuck to the dash with blue tack so I've relocated it to the ash tray, it has obviously been working as the car is in great condition so best to keep it. So after that it was the the glove boxes turn, some great finds in there and one dubious one. I guess we can forgive the old boy as this dude hadn't been exposed as the creep everyone now knows he was yet. Next centre arm rest, surely something ace in there? OH YES!!!!! what a boy! Also more tapes for the win. That's it for now I've been clearing and moving stuff around in the garage so the Jag will fit in once my MX5 sells. I've got a few random bits floating around I want to get rid of including a boss kit for a Rover 800.

If you were to give any of my parents' cars a frisk you'd come up with much of the same clutter, (hopefully without Savile beaming out at you). Dashboard St Christophers, well they go right back to the dawn of motoring, probably in horse-drawn carriages before that. Did the Jag mag guy never clean it or just prefer to leave it undisturbed?
I'm curious as to what your m.p.g. return is, do you have a digital display of fuel consumption? If so what sort of figures was it coming up with when you drove the car home?

the string backed gloves are just perfect...i'd have to leave them in just for the craic. i would tuck the st christopher away in a cubby hole too as he has obviously stool the old thing well.

Yes The Jag mag guy did actually take the st Christopher off the dash prior to me buying it but kept it in the car and left all the other stuff as was, which is what I'm going to do as I think it's a piece of the cars history. I was also curious about what sort of mpg I was getting but pressing the odo button does nothing so its either broken or more likely the base model didn't come with a trip computer!

I had a think about this and thought I might as well consult the drivers handbook. Also it's just so cool Turns out I was pressing the wrong button, so after another try I found out I had averaged 23.2 bearing in mind I didn't reset the trip before I set off, I was sat in a few traffic jams and once I broke free of said jams I "pressed on" I don't think it's bad. I'll reset it and see how I go but it's certainly better than my old series 3 and XF V8 that I used to run. Next on the to do list is to give her a good clean inside and change all four tyres (ouch) the drivers side rear was made in 1993! I'm hoping changing the tyres will eliminate the slight wobble I experience at speed. Edit* I'll have to work on the pictures, I'm taking them on my ancient phone and unless I take them in landscape they are difficult to view. Must do better!*

Must do better!* Making up a decent owners documentation pack can't cost much and significantly enhances the ownership experience. That 23mpg will doubtless improve somewhat on a run, with the most gentle driving I wonder what that could be pushed to? I didn't ever get into the 20's with any of my XJ's and the worst mpg's I ever had was in my Mk X, (in a rush), which was around the 6-7mpg mark. Given the nature of the car and, hopefully, your long-term commitment to it you might be wise to invest in some top quality tyres, (you'd get a set of Bridgestone's on ebay for £280.00). What make would have been on the car when it was sold new? When you get new tyres on you can ask them to balance the wheels using weights on the back as I notice there are some visible weights.

Yes I am looking into various alternatives at the moment, The car came with Pirellis when new I was looking at uniroyal rainsport3 they seem to get favourable reviews, but that is a good price for bridgestones do you have a link? Yes the weight on the outside is the passenger side rear wheel. Unbelievable really that some monkey has put a knock on weight on the rim of an alloy wheel. I'm thinking of changing the wheels anyway the front drivers side is slightly curbed and the passenger side looks to have a slight bend/buckle on the rim.

I was just getting a ball park idea and guessing that it might currently have 225/55 R16's fitted? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WINTER-TYRE-Bridgestone-Blizzak-LM-32-225-55-R16-99H-XL-MO-M-S/153517660196?fits=Tyre+Width%3A225%7CAspect+Ratio%3A55%7CRim+Diameter%3A16&epid=1910371870&hash=item23be5d9824:g:nOwAAOSwvbZdcOHRTheir budget tyres come in at £38.09 a corner if you buy a full set. I can't say I recommend this vendor, they're just the cheapest. It seems a lot of products might be dispatched from Germany and they only have a 96.9 satisfaction rating. Have a play around with different tyre sizes / manufacturers on their site and see what the prices are like! mytyres

Cracking car, manual for the win ! I'm curious about the valet switch in the armrest, did it reduce the max speed to prevent any Ferris Bueller style joyrides ?

No, the valet could take it on a joyride if his heart desired but he couldn't access the boot. Years ago, when 1 key cars were becoming the norm, a few car manufacturers used to provide a valet key which was slightly different to the regular keys, it would open the driver's door and operate the ignition but wouldn't open the glove box or boot lock.
