A great weekend of Scamping happened!
Unfortunately for you, its not a visual feast.
Ever since i've owned her she's had awful issues with power and revving past 3k ish. She'd bog down heavily, the trip to RRG19 was done at 30mph for the most part.
I've set carb up nice and set the timing on several occasions, but figured i'd give it another go.
These 998's are meant to be around 8-10 degrees past tdc, I checked with the strobe and it was at 16. So I set it at 10 and she refused to idle.
Right, i'll set her for a smooth idle then. That was back at an indicated 16.
Knowing this wasn't right, I removed the dizzy and noted that it was pointing in the wrong direction to every website/book I could find. Hmmm, ok.
Put it all back together and went for a drive, with a spanner. Yup, still awful and boggy.
Pulled over, advanced that curse word as far as she'd go before pinking. Jumped back in, wow. What a different car. she revs all the way out now and flies along.
No idea what's going on internally for the dizzy to be wrong, or why the pulley indicated tdc in the wrong place, i'd investigate, but she works and a Micra engine will replace it soon anyways.
Spurred on I did some preperation for my new wheels - yeah you heard - I spent actual money on a set of new wheels and tyres - but you'll have to wait for that reveal.
I had a set of hi-los for xmas, if you don't know, they are like coilovers for Minis
Basically replaces the solid cone with an adjustable rod so you can dial in the ride height.
The rears are dead easy, just jack her up, drop the shock and out it comes.
You can see the original cone on the left and the new setup on the right.
You do have to remove the pivot ball, this is just pressed in and took a fair amount of force to get out
And there it is complete with the 'spring' which is just a rubber cone, meh, it works
All re-fitted and the ride height set to what it currently is, mainly because I need to drive her to the unit to do the fronts, but also because the tyres on her currently are off a 737 or summat and almost touch at this height.
The fronts are a little more involved, requires a special tool to compress the rubber cone. Luckily for me I have a Mini specialist in the unit a few doors down. So i'll borrow his stuff, or make him do it
The test drive (the first since the Gathering) highlighted that the 3 chinese gauges I bought, despite being £80, were in fact junk. They flickered on and off all the time and one of them stayed on even with the key out.
I found an old Lucas temp gauge and bashed it in the dash, yeah it's ruined my single gauge look, but there's still only 2 and I reckon it looks nice. I can also confirm she sits solid at around 87 degrees since the HG replacement.
I was going to drive her to work today, figures though, I open the curtains and it's raining
