I do hate such situations where I’m presented with solid evidence that I’ve lost the plot...... but on the other hand it is nice to find something definitive to correct.
Pity it meant another remove/refit as that is no fun....

There, knew it'd be nowt too bad! It's great when you find a obvious fault, the ones that frustrate me are the ones that just fix themselves, and then you never know if it's going to come back. kevins, you're a Range Rover owner, you should be used to this.

Good news! I had some free time yesterday, so I crawled under the car and did the appropriate amount of swearing and complaining to make this happen... And then this morning I finished off tidying up a few bits and bobs and then was ready to see if it worked. Which it did I get some fuel and popped to the supermarket, which were the only reasonable excuses to driving I had this weekend, and I'm pleased to report I've got 3 forward gears that shift at the right sort of time, and reverse! Marvellous. On top of just 'working', there were noticeably improvements in the gearbox smoothness. I think the restrictor I've fitted to the front band feed line has made quite a difference, as while the 1-2 shift is still pretty firm it's not jarringly harsh as it was previously. Also, when shifting between neutral, reverse and drive, there is no longer a 'clunk', it now shifts smoothly without drama. The engine is definitely happier for having working vacuum advance, it's not so noticeable when accelerating hard, but when just causing along at a constant speed the engine feels like it's just happier and feels less worked as I'm using less throttle. The new tyres ride much much better, and it doesn't crash through the bumps like it did previously. The new Flexi's in the exhaust are a big improvement. There's maybe a tiny whistle-y kinda blow that you can hear at times but its a world of difference, that might settled down with a few miles and a bit of soot. Finally I can report a lack of fuel smell in the cabin, that fancy Cohline hose has worked. So this is all good news. I look forward to getting out on some proper drives when things relax a bit In the mean time I thought after the excitement today it deserved a quick wash to get rid of a couple of months worth of dust and grimy finger prints. Which reminded me, I've still gotta flat and polish the roof after I painted it in November. So that will be the next mini project I guess! Oh and I want to sort a more period correct radio, I've stolen the modern one I had fitted for the Mx5.

Well done for sorting out the gearbox problems. It’s a beautiful car and you must be pleased to be able to drive it now. I am looking forward to the next update, hopefully not gearbox related! All the best, Norman

I've just read all 44 pages of this thread and woah, what a rollercoaster!
So glad its all worked out, but damn, its not been without its trials. Its a lovely looking car; a real credit to you and your work.
