Good to see so many Alfisti here. And even more Alfisti that like the 164. I find it usually is appreciated more outside the Alfisti groups. It is not sportive without compromise and the Dutch and German Alfisti are all about race suspension 105 platform and transaxles. Although the Italians love the 164. I even showed it to the manager of FCA Heritage and found out he owns a 164 Super himself. I shared with him the concerns on parts availability. Anything newer than a 75 is hard to find parts for.

The alfa 164 is a really nice design. The only thing i don't like about them is they are fwd.
I would love to find a cheap 164. The facelift model with the lower headlights and the qv spoiler kit is my favourite. The Super models with the chrome trim i like the least.
If i could get my hands on one cheap enough i would convert it to rwd..
Are you going to the ssar at Zandvoort this weekend? I'll be there on sunday. If you see an olive drab giulia with a 2.4 jtd in it it's mine.

Yes FWD or AWD. To me it does not need RWD; it is superb in its mix of handling and comfort in a way only Alfa seems to have been able to do. The V6 engines could benefit from it but they are anyway too nose heavy and they are much more a highway cruiser. As a RWD play-thing, it is definitely too heavy overall. A 156 would be a better conversion.
I guess the perfect 164 would probably be the first turbo series (the first series had a 4-cil turbo; the well-known Lampredi from Lancia) with the AWD of the Q4.
But a cheap 164 isn't really in existence anymore. A stripped-out body you might be able to find somewhere but you'll go bankrupt on essentials like headlights, bumpers, etc. And they do rust. In Italy they are not so loved yet so sometimes one that has some engine troubles can be found for 500 or less. But even in Italy they are rare now. Maybe a UK version? In Netherlands there are only 140 left which includes many that never see the road. And 140 is actually up from a 100 a few years ago; all Italian import.
I'll be at Zandvoort (volunteer). I think I know your car!

It was time again for Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo. For me the event always means a lot of work. I'm there for technical support which ranges from scutineering, to answering questions to on-site minor repairs. So I did take the 164 there but it was also working; hauling some tools.
All nice and clean in the early morning. Was hard to find it later in the day when the paddocks were all fully filled with Alfa's.
Worked on several cooling issues, sometimes a melted wiring harness and the occassional temperature sensor. Many Alfa's that hardly ever get out to play now circled the track flat-out for half an hour per session in pretty hot weather. 30+ degrees, minus the effect that Zandvoort is all black tarmac...
One fatally damaged engine.. we figured he went on track with only 1 liter of the 5 liter engine oil it should have. Not the best decission he made that day. I also attempted to fix a SZ that damaged a bushing on the Watt linkeage. Got it at least such so that he could drive it home.
I met someone from this board also. Also a great 164.
I'll be on a parts run for the 164 soon. Just some minor parts and trim. The guy that has them also asked me for a little help with his engine:
Somehow there has been a clogging in an oil channel. As the crankshaft main bearing looks very dry (and looked like it has been hot) it probably started before the crankshaft. I first thought the channel in the crankshaft was clogged. The big end just exploded. I'm pretty sure that this also means the small end has run without oil. It will now be an almost complete engine swap.

I understand the pain of parts sourcing; this is why I have a 1997 Super as a spares car for my Cloverleaf. Even though I don't actually need anything, but someday I will, and then i will be very glad of the £50 Super!

All in winter sleep at the moment..
I did another parts run. It was in a basement right inside the historic centre of Amsterdam. Somehow you don't expect dismantled Alfa (minus the body) in there.
I finally have a as-good-as-new set of the bronze trim for front and rear bumper. Maybe I need to do some tinkering in late summer. There is now quite a stack of litte trim and pieces to make it even better looking.

It seems a carspotter liked my 164 at a event about a year ago. Let's just say he has more talent than I do for taking pictures!
Which reminds me... I really need to figure something out to mount the rallyshields... This is ugly. Next time lower on the bumper perhaps. The TS does not need as much coolings as a Turbo or a Diesel version but the frontbumper is still the same. Covering the license plate is a invite to be stopped by police so won't do that.

That is a very nice example of the breed and nice to see a 164 again. Haven't seen one on the road for donkeys years. Owned a Saab 9000 a few years ago and always thought it would be nice to compare one of the Italian offerings on that floor plan with their Swedish cousin. Keep up the good work.

Owned a Saab 9000 a few years ago and always thought it would be nice to compare one of the Italian offerings on that floor plan with their Swedish cousin. Keep up the good work. Thanks! Just like the other ones of the platform, they are rare. In the Netherlands, there are 113 of the 164's licensed. And that includes many that have their license plate temporarily suspended. The Lancia Thema is less than 50, the Saab 9000 also less than 50. The Croma is a little harder to make out thanks to the newer Fiat that had the same name (still; old and new together is some 1500 only). To put it in perspective, the little Alfa Romeo 4C... there are a 119 in the Netherlands. Or the Citroen XM from the same era... 961 remaining. The whole Type Four family is almost completely gone. They have very little in common really. Only Fiat and Lancia really knew the details of their cars. Saab and Alfa Romeo developed theirs in isolation. Their platform buddies had to learn from the media also + several floorpan and doorframe design drawings. In these days of part shortage, sometimes you would wish that they shared more. The Alfa only shares the front wishbone with the others. And I believe the seat frames are compatible also—the rest... nada. Even the front and rear subframes are different. Sorry... I'm a babbling idiot about these cars The good news: in one more week, I will pick-up my 164 from winter storage. Target: get the A/C system working again, fix the rattle in the mirror, replace some of the trim for the good ones I bought, clean it, and then drive it!
In other good news: I still need an OK from the mortgage provider but it looks like I will be able to keep it in a garage next to the (new) house.

No problem babbling on they are all very desirable cars. Was going to have a look at another 9000 a few months ago but got distracted by a 740 Volvo and bought that instead. I was cycling to work one morning a few years ago and what pulled into a yard in front of me but an 8.32 Thema. Nearly fell off my bike with excitement. Did the same when I saw an Evo 190e Cosworth a few days afterwards. Best thing about Northern Ireland there's so many petrol heads about with some really rare cars. Most only come out in the good weather mind which isn't often here!!

NL is also quite a good place for rare cars but they usually only get caring owners from when the cars are 30 years or older.

It woke up from wintersleep! Connected the battery and on the first attempt it started. Nearly all electrics worked fine instantly. Only a few needed encouragement. The first drive really remembered me why it's such a special machine. Alfa's have something special.
It's in the workshop now to get the A/C working again; so that if we ever get nice summer weather again it will be comfortable as well.

There's a bit of a type 4 revolution happening on here at the moment! yours is lovely. I haven't seen those wheels before either on any other Fiat/Lanica/Alfa. Were they 164 specific?

The wheels are normal Speedlines which was OEM. The Lancia Y and many different Alfa's could be ordered with them. Mid 90's seems to have been the sweet spot. Maybe more. There were different finishes, however; plain silver, diamond cut, and some diamond cut with the recessed area's in grey. I made my own version with black instead of grey.

The 164 is back at home after a few minor repairs which included getting the A/C working again. Very happy with that! To celebrate I cleaned it. I only made pictures from the interior (as I hardly have any) but the outside is still as it was last year
Very much a joy to drive!
A friend drove it a little (his dad used to own a 164 untill recently and he has just purchased a Thema 8.32) and was very impressed. Again someone who is surprised how well these drive when all suspension components are stock but new. Perfect balance between comfort and handling.
Still. It would not be an Alfa if there are not a few more things to do. Technology wise it is pretty much limited to the radio which does not have radio reception and does not work on the rear speakers.
Roadtrips and events have been cancelled and I don't see us leaving the country in May to travel to the Retrorides Gathering. So while the car is ready the world now isn't.

I'd be interested to know what their comparisons would be between the 164 and the Thema. I'd love to have an 8.32, it would fit in well with my 164!

Thanks!
The comparison with the 8.32 needs to wait for a little. While it is a good specimen it needed some maintenance (like cambelts and various oil seals) first. Which requires to take the engine and front subframe out... which opens up a window to do things properly; like adjusting the valve clearance which is near impossible once back in the car.
So he bought the 8.32 after driving it for 5 minutes only. Then took it apart which is the condition now. So I'm eager also to see how it compares. It sure is a heavy car with disappointing horsepower ratings (a Thema turbo is and feels faster and a 164 QV 24V should be similar) but the sound is something else.
