Not great, not terrible. Hand brake is a known weak point and looks simple enough to adjust. The brake lines are a little on the harsh side but don't look bad to replace. Wheel bearings - not sure on that, they feel fine to me! Looks like a busy weekend! James

I've noticed that the testers are just chucking anything they feel unsure about down as an advisory now, I wonder if it's to cover their ass?

Also whats all the comments about rusty springs, this seems to be something they have started doing lately yet every car I've ever had has had rusty springs.

I'm glad I am not the only one seeing this! There are a lot of cars I had MOTed a few years ago I am sure wouldn't get a ticket now. Bonkers strategy when combined with the foxing stupid MOT exemptions for pre '79 rustastic tat.
Just to make life more fun the throttle cable in the Metro snapped this evening when retrieving it from the MOT station having collected the Bentley. Thankfully it was walking distance but it lead to an interesting drive with dubious use of molegrips. Oh, and the MX5 also ran out of MOT today and is booked in for the morning so I will be back to getting the train to work!

Keep up the great work - these old girls are so fantastic & you're doing her very proud indeed. Chapeau Cheers Matt

At first glance I was disappointed for you but reading it again it’s not bad at all. All done in a weekend? Rusty springs? They’re all like that mate!
How many MOT exempt cars are going to be driving around with rusty springs and corroded brake pipes?

Has stated above testers are listing all & everything regardless of how trivial - I had a clients car back from test a few months ago - passed but advisory on 'slight surface rust showing on underside components' well of course it has it's 30 years old & done 80'000 miles !! its alike to a building surveyor inspecting a 30 year old house and noting that the roof tiles are slightly dirty

I once had a car fail because of the Magic Tree air freshener (Hanging from Rear View Mirror)
He actually issued me a failure and said once you have removed it, bring it back within 7 days for a re-test. He wasn't kidding either - I had to rebook for the following day!

This looks like something I would get myself into in no time. Bookmarked. You need to make sure you find something seriously wrong with it for the sake of my wallet.. Greg

Tell you what, thats a major league win! The essentials won't be too hard to put right for a pass and the rest you can do as you go. The surface corrosion b******s has become standard fayre on the new MOTs, I have heard that they MUST find issues, however trivial, as the powers that be will assume that they are not doing the MOTs properly if too many pass with a good and clean bill of health. Great result, i reckon!

I was looking at the history of a car the other day for a family member, almost every year it had a minor of "obstruction in the windscreen removed by customer on request" why on earth do they even need to record something like this. As you say seems to be writing something for the sake of it.

I was looking at the history of a car the other day for a family member, almost every year it had a minor of "obstruction in the windscreen removed by customer on request" why on earth do they even need to record something like this. As you say seems to be writing something for the sake of it. I know it seems very 'jobsworth' to fail or advise on something hanging from a mirror. Why would you take a car for mot with something hanging from the mirror though? Look at it from this way, you have just mot'd the 10th car today, and this is the 7th one today when a customer didn't bother to remove something that is obstructing the view before taking it for an mot. To some 'drivers' being able to view dash cams, satnavs, stuffed toys, air fresheners and all sorts of other items without having to move there eyes slightly is far preferable to seeing who or what they are about to hit. Bear in mind, a tester is not allowed to unclip or move plastic trim to check for something essential, like major structural corrosion, condition of brake pipes etc. If the tester is being checked by the ministry and has got into the habit of moving stuff the customer should have, guess who gets points? By putting and advisory or failure on, not only does it go in favour of the T S statistics, it might also help in court, Say the customer has a crash, knocks off a cyclist, or runs someone over, Police/insurance blame the thing in the windscreen, and therefore the car is not roadworthy, the first thing to come out of the drivers mouth will be, 'its just passed an MOT'. Now, because the tester has done his job correctly, its not his fault someone has chosen to put something back in line of sight.

Rusty springs ffs!!! I had that on my mondeo a few years back, the biggest laugh is the springs were new as both had broken less than 12 months before. I bollocking the tester over it, he looked sheepish but said that had to list something.

I was talking with an MOT tester the other week and his normal advisory is undertray obscuring visual assesment But I've also heard that a missing under-tray (or engine cover) could be a fail? Although having said that the Alfa passed with both missing and the MX5 with its under-tray missing...
