"The money I have to spend on just car cleaning products, various degrees of polish, specal cloths, wax imported from the the states.
I can't enjoy the car through constanf fear of something being drawn to coming in contact with it. When I drive it I am planning the cleanest route to were I am going, when I park in a car park I have to buy two tickets and use two spaces"
Completely self inflicted i'm afraid, you'll get no sympathy from me. Either enjoy using the car and get it dirty, or carry on polishing. Its entirely your choice so NO WHINGING.

Cars are for using, not polishing! This goes even for vintage cars - some of the machinery that the VSCC go racing or off road trialling in, is extremely valuable, but the cars in question are used (and abused) to the full extent of their capabilities My Sprite looks quite good, but is far from concours, and I like it that way, as I can thrash it without having to worry. In fact, I've only bothered to clean it once in the last 6 months, which for my cars, is very frequently. ;D

Yeah, don't hold back... just say what you think ;D To me, if I found a timewarp or absolute minter, I'd just see it as an opportunity to drive a "nearly new" classic. I think the problem with concours is that you never really own the car - you're merely a custodian. That to me is like keeping it for someone else. Obviously if it's a one off or ultra-rare car then there is a certain amount of responsibility that should come with ownership, but if it gets to the point where you're restricted in what you do with it then for me it'd stop being fun.

You're right, if I was too guilty to use a car the way it should be used I'd get rid of it. My Imp is going to be the same way as Amazonsprite's sprite, nice and respectable looking, presentable, but never perfect, and not alltogether genuine or period, I plan on modyfying most of the interior, replacing most of it, so originality is no concern of mine. There are certain cars that I would keep original, if I owned "IMP 1", the Glasgow Transport Museums Hillman Imp, the first production Imp made, I'd keep it as original in most respects, since it has a lot of history and it'd be a shame to tear out all it's original engine and interior to be replaced by a cage and buckets and a 998 made from another Imp's engine (which is what I do with Imps normally, but then I've never owned a pre '69 Imp with the 'wingnut' dash, which is quite nice so I wouldn't modify that) but I'd use it regularly, and I wouldn't have nightmares about using a different brand of battery or wheelnuts than standard.

I'm a little confused on this.
To me, concourse cars are not simply perfectly original/restored to be as they once where. They can also be modified and custom and stuff, just not driven a whole lot, polished and chromed to within an inch of their lives- you know, the cars like the ones in Volksworld that have had $30k spent on their paint alone.
Whilst I could never own a car like this, I do appreciate their existence as something inspirational, get new ideas and new ways of looking at things. It's nice to see them, but really, I just could not own one. Even the unmodified originals inspire respect, although again, just not my thing.
So in summary, nice to look at in shows, but I just don't have the mentality (or bank balance) required to put one together. Also, I don't buy VWorld anymore- got really fed up of the complete lack of 'real' cars not built to a price.

Wow I was only trying to give an insight into what it is like owning a concours car, didn't think I'd get ripped appart LOL!
I never used to be one of the bufty brigade, I bought my XR4i because it was a good price, the fact is was so mint in condition was just a bonus. Then as I grew more attached to the car it just seemed so wrong to ever abuse it.
However it -is- modified and I am turbo converting it and it's getting lots of polished and chrome bits. I still gets used in anger now and then you just can't be totally wreckless because sometimes it just isnt worth it.
There are many pleasures to owning a concours car also, I don't see how you have to swing to these extremes on here sometimes. If I want a car to abuse in winter I'll buy one... which I did!
