I've got an itch for something relatively large and quick, preferably 90's but any ideas welcomed! I am not biased, from any corner of the globe. Quick I guess is a personal thing but I suppose anything around 200bhp+ ought to do the trick.

Honda Legend. Jaguar XJ-R / Daimler Super V8. Toyota Camry. Ford Scorpio Ultima. Rover 827 Vitesse. Audi A8. BMW 735 / 740. Bentley Mulsanne. If you'd consider 4WD; Range-Rover or Porsche Cayenne.

Mercedes C32AMG, E55AMG at the upper end of the budget, but plenty more power than 200hp. Or maybe an CLS or S with a normal V8 (500)
Peugeot 406 V6 if you can find one, will be comfortable within budget. MG ZS 180 could be worth a look too.
Audi S4, BMW E60 545/550i and Subaru Impreza WRX do pop up within budget.

Saab 9000 turbo. You could get a nice one and play around with it for £5k. Engines can make decent (300+) power for not a lot of money, and an almighty slog of mid range torque. Or 9-5 for something a little more modern, better handling and braking but not as involving or likeable imo.
Accord Type R Carlton GSI if you can find one Omega V6 Estate but Caldina GT-T Likewise Stagea Galant/Legnum VR4 Legacy GTB etc Mondeo ST Mondeo ST200/ST24 Alfa 155/156 V6 Octavia VRS Evo IV

Some decent suggstsion! I doubt a T5R for something non-ropey is £5k now, and the R bits now carry a premium; bumpers for example are crazy money and that's when they turn up.
So, saloons.

As a wildcard, (not quite retro), the VW Phaeton is an astonishing car within this price range. The W12 6 litre petrol engine is the one to look out for; as fitted to the Bentley Continental / Flying Spur range.

Not a Retro choice, but I’d go with the MK4 Mondeo 2.5T. Awesome package and not many people know they exist so a bit of a Q car. Virtually unlimited tuning possibilities and 350BHP is pretty easy and not ridiculously expensive.
I’ve built quite a few of them.
For something a bit more retro, Legacy Twin Turbo or X300 XJR-6

I've got some previous in big, cheap saloons Jag XJ40 4.0 (similar running gear/car to the X300 also) Handled very well I thought, engine was smooth but took a while to really get into the powerband and start shifting, very comfortable seats but also the thirstiest car I've owned. The later V8 X308's are still amazingly cheap, I'd like to try an XJR some day BMW E38 750i Bit of a rocket ship, with the 5.4L V12 the car never seemed to break acceleration and could get up to silly speeds with ease. Well equipped and refined (double glazing, also available on other models as an option), handled relatively well considering its size but felt less direct than the XJ. Ultimately I got a little bored with it as it was almost too good at everything? Saab 9-3 Aero HOT OK technically a hatch, but also similar running gear available in the 9-5 if you prefer a 3 box shape. I think the 9-5 chassis also copes with the power better as the 9-3 was a bit of an unhinged driving experience at times! Was very quick though and easy to eke more power out of if so desired. The one I bought was a bit of a lemon, but a nice example could be a very good all rounder Honda Legend I've got it in coupe guise but available as a saloon also. My current daily driver, wouldn't say its blisteringly quick (200-odd bhp 3.2 V6) but it gets along nicely if you keep it in 2nd/3rd gears. Is front wheel drive but doesn't especially feel it, a nice enough place to sit but not overly special, doesn't feel as comfortable as the Jag. Parts availability is poor for the 2nd Gen Legend, the later car is a bit easier, and the earlier car shares underbody components with the Rover 800 series so may be a bit easier also.

For something a bit more retro, Legacy Twin Turbo or X300 XJR-6 I quite fancy one of those Mondeo’s in estate flavour. Love the sound of a five cylinder. I know it’s not a 90’s car, but along with the fabulous Phaeton mentioned above, the Honda Legend imported in the mid/late 2000’s is a really interesting thing. Utterly anonymous, but loaded with gear and not hugely expensive.

W210 E55 AMG. 360bhp. 0-60 4.9 seconds. Remove the secondary cats (we're not in California) and centre box, replace with a crossover and straight pipe for a noticeable difference. £200 remap adds another 26 bhp and similar torque, and removes the limiter. They will push 200mph.... Sold my tidy one for £3500

Accord Type R seem to be available for under £3k, is there a better all round option than that for the £?
