"Work have asked me to work from one of the other branches for a few months" she says.
"Well, the Subaru has run out of MOT just recently and I'm not using it, you could insure if for a day and see how it goes maybe?" Says I.
"ok"
leaky rear shocks, wishbones and handbrake adjustment. Easy... but it's now on 170k which means it also needs cambelt....
Hmmm, more than it's worth and a lot of labour for me hmmm.
"Drive it home and we'll figure something out"
Chloe starts to send me polos, civics and generally everything cheap locally for a week on the FB marketplace.
She sees a Corrado 16v on ebay and we go to view it but it's a bit more of a project than we wanted and would have cost the same to get right as what the subaru would.
A bit more time passes chloe sends me a link to an audi coupe but I couldn't open the link for one reason or another so I attempt a quick search for myself and I spotted a lovely little jade green number which I presumed was the car she sent me. "can we go view it? It's GREEEEEN!"
"green?" she says so I send her the car and she agrees to go.
I just looked back at messenger to find the Audi she sent me was definitely a completely different car... woops?
Anyway off we went on Friday to take a look.
First impressions were good, it's definitely used but runs well and is comfy. I've had a good run of VW's of this age so I can't see this Audi being any different. What is it? Not a quattro, as we've been asked by literally everyone this side of the sun already, awaiting emails/texts from people on the other side.
It's a 2.0 5 pot auto Audi Coupe GT, a car (or rather one that had a manual gearbox and the 2.2 and probably should be a quattro) that was on my I should own one, one day list.
They say never buy a car that's been raced or...
curse word.
I think she planned her clothes ahead of time don't you?
The trip back was reasonably uneventful beside an uncollared greyhound nearly getting broadsided, I cornered the dog into a garden and spoke with a local to get the dog taken to the vets for a chip check. The dog was nice enough just wanted to go on an adventure I guess.
I noticed whilst following behind that the brake lights flickered on over bumps and would stay on sometimes after braking has ended.
Chloe reported that the car smelled when she put the blower on, I've put this down to "it's an old car" as there are no clear leaks and it's not running hot.
And that the odometer stopped working.
When we got back little chloe took it upon herself to start clearing off the little bits of grot on and in it.
Astute painters, car restorers and well generally anyone who looks at the car will notice a few shades of green on the outside, yesssss we know, there's some filler on the arches just for honesty's sake but it's cool enough to forgive it that I have no idea why near rear lights have been painted as that's fine, same near the rear window upon further inspection, I feel it was an attempt to further blend the colours but was given up on.
This morning I set about fetching service items (oil an filter) and taking a look into the immediate problems.
Turns out the odometer doesn't work because the larger of the gears broke in two, ordered a new one, bit of a rip off for what it is (nearly 20 bob)
The brake light switch was a little notchy, I've never really fiddled with one before, it clearly works otherwise the brake lights wouldn't come on, I've stuck it back in and wound it further in it's adjuster to sit harder against the pedal so you have to push further to disengage it, they're cheap so one's on it's way to us anyway.
The radio is a bit... old school, if you turn it on and there's no sound you have to slide it out using it's bucket like handle and slam it back in and the sound is wobbly, I presumed the pins at the back were worn so pulled it all apart and adjusted them to sit as you would expect and contact cleaned it all but it's still the same. I can't see chloe getting another radio as she will only really need the car for a short while.
I also for one reason or another don't seem to have taken a picture of the interior, don't worry I'll sort that in an edit or future post, that's mostly all green too
That's pretty much where we are now.
