I bought and subsequently broke a car for spares that happened to have a pretty cool reg number, but the DVLA wont be able to transfer the registration because the car has been SORN'd for 8 years. The only way round it is to MOT and tax it, which isn't going to happen.
Probably a long shot but does anyone know of a way round this rule, or is it off to the great number recycling hole in the sky?

I thought you didn't need an MOT any more to transfer the reg? As long as you have the logbook, I didn't think being SORN was an issue. Might be wrong though!

Pretty sure it needs to have been MOT'd in the past two years and SORN'd/taxed continuously to transfer it, your only option would be to either get a dodgy MOT put on it (obviously illegal) or hold onto in the hope of rules changing

Dvla can pull you in for an inspection if you mot a car and then put the plate on retention. I've got a plate on the mk2 I don't want/going to give back to p/o but stuck with it until I can get it back on the road.

The DVLA say "needs to be taxed if SORN'd for longer than 5 years" I just wondered if there was maybe a loophole somewhere

maybe i was just lucky, the plate was nothing special
they might pay more attention if its a valuable number

I've tried to do this online but the website says I have to ring up due to the registration history of the car.
Any idea what that may mean?

Could give them a call and talk the them I suppose. I just filled the forms out, sent them off with my 80 quid and got a letter of rejection in return

Shure one of our customers bought a car that had been off the road for years had a good plate on it. Scraped the car and was issued a certificate of destruction. C O D. He now has that plate on his own vehicle. Think it was a minx or something 50s. Did this a couple years ago and said that was how he got around it being off the road for so long 👍

I called the DVLA and they'd never heard of the C.O.D method
