Water in the exhaust is perfectly normal, when you burn petrol you primarily produce water and carbon dioxide, unless you are doing high speed to generate lots of heat in the exhaust it just collects in the exhaust system.
The deposits on the rad cap look like the sort of thing you get when coolant gets old, a good flush then new coolant should help.
So it really comes down to find out where the leak is, idealy you should pressurise the system and look where the coolant leaks out, I doubt it's the hesd gasket but core plugs could be a contender and do suffer if old coolant is left in. Unfortunstelly two of them are in the back of the cylinder head and back of the engine block which needs the gearbox out to replace.

Cheers guys! I'm not mega worried about the water. Just cus it looked a funny colour not unlike the coolant or inside of the radiator . I'll pick up some degreaser tomorrow and try again. It smokes quite a bit which is my make concern but yeah... maybe i'm just over reacting.
I did change the coolant around January so it should be good. Gave it a decent flush too. Maybe the core plugs on the side have just been change then. If the rear ones had been done you'd think someone would have done the clutch as that needs doing haha

Hey mate
The bonnet on my capri steams and also tend to get crystalline on the rad cap and where any small leaks are, so wouldn't worry to much.
Sounds like it just needs to warm up and clear itself out. Pinto engines are pretty resilient in my experience.
Good work with the carb, I gave up on one a few years ago and just brought new
Cheers

Top up the Water and use her just keep an eye on the water level if it drops away quickly then do another compression test when theengine is warm.
Great work on getting the carb done your self.
When starting from cold depress the pedal once to set the auto choke to the on position and then don't touch the throttle just crank it till she starts.

Cheers re carb. It wasn't too bad just did a bit each day over about 3 days. I would have bought another if I didnt have to save the pennies. Thanks mate will do that and nice tip on the choke. I think I just feel like theres always going to be something mega with this Car and I just want to get out in it. I'll get back on it tomorrow. Probably will give it another clean as there is a lot of oil and stuff on the back of the engine then let it warm up and burn it off.

It takes very little oil to make a manifold smoke for a while. The residue from the de-greaser will smoke as well. Take it for a good drive and get it nice and hot. I bet at the first traffic light you get too theres smoke pouring off the manifold and by the end theres none.
The rusty rough finish on that manifold will hold the oil/ residue in too which wont help. I fitted some new headers to my Capri, First time i stopped i thought the car was on fire but it was the oil on them from storage (to stop them rusting) burning off!

Hey CJ! Firstly top job refurbing that carb!
Today's job for you is to start it up again let it warm up for a couple of minutes and then get out for a 10-15 minute test drive. Its going to stink, you will hear every noise that every part of the car makes and you are going to see every slight bit of smoke that comes out of the bonnet. When you get back open the bonnet and check coolant and oil levels and when everything is ok leave it running until your fan kicks in. After that go inside, put the kettle on and enjoy a celebratory brew before going out for a proper drive in your newly renovated Capri!

As above I don't think there is much wrong with it that a good run wouldn't sort out, Where did the water come from you showed soaking the rag in the video?

I will do that and was going to today until the heavens decided to open up till about rush hour. I was going to go out anyway but thought any problems in the rain would have seemed ten times worse. Can't wait to get it out on the road. I had a look at the exhaust today and it is still covered with oil where the gear box was leaking so i'm sure that isn't helping. I've ordered some Gunk as I did really want to clean the engine up anyway. Had the sad dream of painting the Capri and Escorts engine but a good clean would do the trick. I dabbed that out of the tail pipe.

Also on a weird side note... a fellow musician offered me this for fairly cheap. I don't think its going to happen now as I doubt I can get it through the front door to the garden plus... no job. Very tempting though as I thought I could store it in the shed for use later or flip it.

Well here it is! The Capri moves under its own power in 9 months. Can't believe its taken that long but, Its finally moving!! I only took it round the block a few times and let it warm up as its making a few odd noises that need checking out (you can hear it in the middle of the vid). Overall though, I'm very pleased just want to sort these few things out now and hit the road. Being my first proper project and having to scrape the pennies/work during this time to do it, I probably haven't done too bad. Off the top of my head so far I've fix or replaced: Remove and Refit Axles New Leaf Springs Steering rack Brake Callipers Brake Hoses/New Fluid Fix Fuel Gauge (wires the wrong way round) Replace Temp Sender Add an Oil Pressure Pipe/Union Coolant Flush and Change Heater Matrix/Blower Motor & Wiring Clean up Fuse Box Stereo Wiring LED Dash Lights Various interior bulbs Rocker Cover Respray Full Interior Swap (grey to Brown) (garage fitted front springs and dampers for me) Heres video evidence : The only reason I didnt go too far is the nocking noise coming from the rear I'm crossing my fingers that its something in the boot, Something on the suspension I didnt do up to full torque but, hopefully not the Diff again. It seemed to be when you got up to 25 mph (ish)and constant no matter if you are giving it gas or not... I didnt try it in neutral. I know theres a few clunks from the front end as the lowering springs are moving about a bit too... at this point I might let the garage look at it after a few tests. I noticed the brakes we're not really any different than before and I think I can hear the rear dragging as well. I'm also really chuffed that it gets up to temp and so far doesnt get to high. I way only going round the block in a square for about 10-15 mins but, It stayed steady and old moved up to just over half when I was driving. Oh and you don't see it in the video but it was a pain to start. Once I opened the K&N and closed the choke flaps a bit more it fired up (with a flash of yellow flame ) so... Manual choke possibly in the future.

It sounds like something in the driveline, I'd check the wheels are tight first, then look at the prop bolts and joints.

Sounds like a loose wheel to me .
Had the same after fitting some freshly powder coated wheels & the wheel nutswore through the coating .
A lesson learned to always clean the nut/bolt seats after a refurb .

Yes a loose wheel but more likely it's a prop shaft UJ with one of the bearing packs failed probably the rear UJ.

Fairly embarrassing but you were right. I think i'd left the only finger tight as I still want to cut down the U bolts.

Grest result,
At least it was an easy fix and you now know what a loose wheel sounds like!
For the brakes have you tested the servo?
To test it with the engine turned off press the pedal 10 times, then while pushing on the pedal with moderate pressure start the engine, the pedal should drop a bit further.

I havent tested the servo but will give this a go. When I was bleeding the brakes I couldn't get the fluid to run clear so thinking something could be up Servo/cylinder end. I've read you can leave the pedal depressed over night so might do that. I did wonder if it could be the seals in the master cylinder. From what I've read it seems its a thing that Capris have rubbish brakes but, I don't see why they have too yet. It'll be great to drive if I can get these brakes better.

Servo TestDid this test which seemed to be fine. Pumped it 10 times then kicked it up and it dropped slightly. I'd only had the Car running for a about a minute before as I knew it would never kick up first time. So when i turned it off, pumped the pedal 10 times, turned it back on, it snuffed the Car out and smoke poured out the K&N (I had the bonnet up). I notice with this one if I tap the brakes without the car running for a bit it tends to snuff it out. Really annoying when your trying to get off the drive. I also pumped it while the car was off, left it about 2 mins and checked it for pressure and there seemed to be some there. Not sure if this was the best check. I'll still probably book this in with a local garage as I'm definitely and Armature and done want to be hitting motorway speeds and have no brakes. Next on the list is:New U-bolts (never changed these when I did the axle as I wanted to check it worked first) Indicator Stalk (seems to be getting stuck and I put back together in a rush) Fuel Tank Straps (looks a little low on one side) Anyone know anything about fitting Vinyl Roofs??? I really want to fit one but, I'm missing the illusive gutter trim and Gutter extenders. Could a trimmers of some kind fit universal parts ? I had a lead on some gutter trims over the weekend on a scrap Car but, the seller never got back to me and I think someone said they'd pay more :/

Anyone know anything about fitting Vinyl Roofs??? I haven't fitted one personally, but a good friend of mine has and he said that he'd just pay a professional to do it next time. It took two attempts as the seam wasn't perfect down the centre the first time! If you do get it fitted elsewhere, make sure you remove whats on already and sort out any scabs of rust first as once the roofs on you'll have no idea whats happening under there.
