Look what turned up this morning. I've been looking at these for about a year . Should be useful for the Escort too as it has no rev counter. Heres a couple more pictures of the inside of the Carb. I though seen as I had the choke linkage off I should check inside in case something was a miss. Also cleaned some of the black off the Choke flaps. I need to check these but I'm guessing the are the correct Jets. one was 165 and the other 120. If your tuning in here go back one page as you can see I seemed to have it working... got too confident and cleaned up the back of the choke housing and it now seems worse!!!! going to get back to it today hopefully.

looking at your previous pics, is the shaft on the pull of mechanism the right way round, there should be a flat on the outside the cam on the shaft which goes through to the back engages with, difficult to tell from the photos.

The inside of that looks very dirty, I wouldn't mind betting you may have some blocked jets, worth checking the accelerator pump diaphragm as they fail as well

Ok so i've got it back to kind of where I had it before. The choke has to be turned pointing the sky to have any spring to the choke flaps. I am wondering if I can split the choke housing which seems to have seize together, make a new gasket and twist the middle section back to this point (so the pipe faces in the correct manor ) then I'm on the home straight. The only problem is... boiling water doesnt seem to move the flaps any more Heres a couple of videos of me explaining it and one of my Test...

I suspect you need to strip the choke housing clean it all up and get everything free running there should be no perceptible friction in any of the joints.

This is great mate!!! thanks!! once i get it running and drive it a bit i will upgrade mine if I enjoy the Car. Been fixing it for ever it seems. If you wouldnt mind sending me the instructions I'll see what I can do with what I have. I've Had a bit more success with the choke housing. Managed to split it and now it moves freely. Seems like this was a big problem but, would be nice to know what the instructions say as I still think i've made my own version on the rules here. I'm going to clean the jets too so will use the chart you posted!

Get your self a cheap ultrasonic cleaner to clean the jets it will pay dividends later on as it will clean the so easily and it's useful to have for cleaning other things.

As far as the choke housing with the water hose spouts goes, that should turn in the steel retaining ring so you can adjust. I would say some heat, some penetrating things (try alcohol, atf, vinegar...) should loosen it up.

I had a few more tests this morning while making a cup of tea. Seems like its a fine line between getting the flaps to open under heat and then sending the cold tap through doesnt really close them. I'll keep messing though. I was hoping to get it back on the Car today as I want to move it. I took this plastic sleeve out of the choke mechanism , it seemed to be the only thing making it stick. Its a bit sloppy now but a much smoother freer motion. It seemed to help on another test but, I wonder if the biometric spring is just tried and hasnt the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding. I did manage to split and clean up the housing and I made a new gasket out of gasket paper.

In the name of science I fitted the Carb back to the Car, also because there is some sort of social distance driveway street party going on and I wanted to move it. After a few cranks I had fuel then it fired into life!! fantastic! It was idling a little high but after watching a weber tuning video I had messed with the mixture and idle screw a little to try and reset thing to what i thought was right from the video. Anyway after running for a couple of minutes ok, I started moving it backwards to which at first it cut out (not unusual), I tried again and all good untill I got to the pavement it sounded like a metallic dragging noise! at first I thought the propshaft was hitting the pavement as it slopes up hill slightly but it wasn't. I restated the car and it was clattering like mad. I rolled it back a bit and left it as you see bellow. Could this be pinging? and if it had been running fine for a little while why would it be doing it on restart? I thought if it was fine at idle (idle seemed slightly fast) that it would only do it on acceleration unless its some other catastrophic failure My Escort pings a little but this was like that sound on steroids. A lot of curtain twitching goes on around here so i'm dreading firing it up again and trying to fix this. To try and bring a little joy back I put the old but newly sprayed black grill back on. I think it looks way better than the Mk2... might sell that and higher a professional tuner lol.

I'd be very suprised if it's pinging, if it was so far advanced it did that at low speed maneuvering it simply wouldn't start or run.
My first thoughts would be:
Is the noise there when its neutral,
Does it do it with the clutch fully engaged,
Are there any nuts or washesrs missing you could have dropped down the inlet manifold.

It sound like there are a few different noises going on... A dragging noise could be the brakes if everything has been apart recently and there’s just a bit of rust on the disks.. Clattering sound sounds like something is loose - nut or bolt from where the carbs been off?

I think when It was in neutral it did it too. I shut the Car off and then when I kicked it back up i'm sure i made sure the clutch was out and it was in neutral. It does have a bit of a noise when you press the clutch from memory but I didnt really notice it when I was doing this. I am wondering If a washer could have gone down the inlet and i'm concerned how much of the engine i'm going to have to tare down to find it. I turned it over using a ratchet and it seemed ok. I was thinking of buying a flexible magnet thing to prod down the intake and maybe the spark plug holes. So far today, I took off the Carb again and couldnt see anything in the immediate intake so, I moved to the Rocker Cover as i wondered if a lifter or something may have slipped. All looks ok though and this gives me a chance to check the spray bar later and paint the cover blue. I'm starting to wonder if its something to do with the propshaft or clutch. I'll probably remove the intake next but the noise was so loud next doors heard it. Hoping something hasn't traveled down into the head I really should have started it up before messing with the Carb after doing all the work on the Axle / gear box seal.

If it does it in neutral it can't be the prop or axle, if you have dropped something down the inlet check the valve clearances if ones large it may have something jammed in the valve seat, if something's in the combustion chamber the only real option is to pull the head which is a pretty simple and cheap job on a pinto. I once dropped a collet into a pinto plug hole it didn't do any significant damage (few small dints in piston), if it's still running chances are you will only have minor damage too.

Thats what i'm hoping if this is the case. I'll look at the valve clearances tomorrow. Really hoping I don't have to take the head off. The only thing I can see i'm missing is a washer for the Carb but I'm 99% positive I watched it didnt go down there when i removed the unit from the Car. I bought a flexible magnet but It might be too far gone now. I'm just trying to figure out at what point I have to take the head off? and also trying to decided if I should kick it over again briefly to hear the sound if I cant find anything with a magnet. Such a bummer!! it was running lovely until this point

If it has something in the cylinder you should be able to feel it turning the engine over with the plugs out, it will go tight at tdc on one pair of cylinders.

Great will try this!! would this apply even if its a flat washer? I no this is a non contact engine but not sure how big of a gap that means Priced up new bolts and a gasket set from tickover and it only comes to £40 which isnt too bad. I guess I would need a new belt kit too. Would just need to blag a decent Torque wrench. Mine is a cheap one and I don't fancy its chances at something like this.

That bit of plastic that was making it stick will also ruin your attempts at tuning. Its a bush that allows the choke spindle to turn easily. And because its gone you might get an air leak which will play havoc with the mixture as vacuum draws in air in. Its position might, and I mean might mean you get away with it as its in front of the jets. Have you considered getting the carb re-built? The modern ethanol based petrol is horrible stuff in a classic and I, in a fit of hope, have replaced my rubber fuel lines with ethanol proof ones and I'm re-building the carb, just to ensure its leak free.
