I did love the recently sold E34. However, and it's a big however, I wasn't 'in love' with it. My heart is definately with Japanese motors, and I thought until recently I was going to get my old Nissan Maxima back. While I'm disappointed it didn't happen, everything happens for a reason so they say. If that deal had got over the line, I wouldn't have ended up with this rare bit of 2 door coupe-ness, collected today.
1989 Mazda 626 GT Coupe
132k miles
2 litre gold top FE3 engine (FE-DOHC)
First sight of it on the sellers driveway....
I went down to Stockport to collect it with my mate in his Renault 19, also from 1989....
Another 80 miles completed, this time at Wetherby Services...
And home at last...
The car was parked up for many years, and basically recomissioned about 4 years, but most of the work has been done in the last 12 months.....
Cam-belt changed (it's a non-interference engine, but best done)
New Discs and pads all around
New brake fluid
Two refurbished calipers
New shock absorbers and new springs on all 4 wheels!
New Fuel pump
New fuel tank
New radiator
New power steering pump
New Thermostat
New starter
4 brand new Dunlop blue sport tires
New rear silencer
New Clutch and flywheel
New gearbox oil ( difficult job)
New Battery
Oil changes and spark plugs and tune.
Various dents removed and new paint down the sides.
Drove great. One slight oddity. When I was about 30 miles from home, the car lost a bit of power momentarily a couple of times going round right hand bends/right at roundabouts. Felt like it was running out of fuel, then kicked back in ok when straightening up. Fuel gauge seems to work perfectly. I filled it up at the nearest Shell, and there were no issues on the last bit of my journey home. Could it be related to the fuel, when it's low, sloshing over to one side of the tank? It's had a new fuel pump and a new fuel tank in the last year. Something to look into. Other than that, it absolutely knocked my socks off on the way home. Revvy. Torquey. Smooth. No bangs, rattles, squeaks, shakes or vibrations. It feels like a gem.
The plan tomorrow is to give it that first wash (love that), polish and wax it (I don't think it needs a clay bar first). More pics tomorrow.
