Re asbestos. Before you pay out contact your local council who are responsible for waste disposal. Our authority has certain days of the month where you book an appointment and turn up at a nominated landfill free and they bulldoze it in there and then. You have to make sure it's double wrapped in heavy visqueen during transporting (and should be labelled) Ours is Nottinghamshire County Council btw Sadly I did ask at the local council tip last weekend and I’m aloud to drop 3 bin bags worth per year. This is a bit silly as in order to fit it into a bin bag I have to break it up, which you really want to avoid doing, plus it will take me about 8 years to get rid of it all. No point in asking at local tip. Better off contacting main office as it's the landfill site they use which in my case is approx 10 miles away. Local tip can only deposit small amounts in skips.... which then goes to landfill when full

Another day, another wheel barrow full of soil and cement slops. This might be the last one, bar for one little bit in a corner. The biggest success of the day was getting shot of the worlds most rotten Mk2 Escort. It’s been in the entrance of the garage for almost 2 years. It looks like it come out of that cave all those scrap cars were thrown in, and then stored in a salt mine. Adios I dropped it off at the owner’s father’s lock up garage, undrilled the vin plates and told him to buy a new shell. Much cheaper and quicker than doing any work on this. This left me with this. I spent the remainder of the afternoon moving things around to make more space but forgot to take any photos. I need to move the tractor over to the right but it’s stuck in gear. I need to wait until there are more bodies about. I’d like to sell it really, but Jones Junior (The Younger) loves playing on it and won’t let me. I think it’s his “playing” is the reason it’s jammed in gear.

I have a 2 post lift in the other garage so won’t be putting one in here. Not yet anyway. When I convert the other garage into a bungalow (retirement fund) I’ll probably move it in here if it fits. I’ve got a bench in here near the back and even found a vice amongst all the junk, but this garage is mainly for storage.

I keep meaning to update this but every time I go to do it I realise I have not taken any photos. Well today I have! There’s not a great deal of change but soffits and guttering have been on since mid November. The downpipes are flowing into land drains that go into the pond at the far end of the garden. I had the drains fitted ready for this about 3 or 4 years ago as the yard was always muddy as it’s in a bit of a sump and the clay soil doesn’t allow any natural drainage. It’s always nice and dry now. Have some photos. ! For those interested this has cost approximately £11000. That’s all my savings gone now. An insulated roller shutter door is going to cost £950 so I need to save up for that. I also have to fit a foot-door first too as the properties electric meter and RCD is in this garage so if the electric trips I won’t get in to turn it back on. I have an old PVC back door to use for that.

Love the look of the garage/storage (isn't that what a garage is? hmm). Plenty of light, so not falling over stuff and also being able to find elusive objects.

I want the new garage to be just for working on the cars so all the bikes, mower and all the other cars (and van) can go on here. I’m trying to unclutter one garage by filling the other 😁

However your solution is probably cheaper. Thom

Thom Thanks Thom The last place I worked had a roller shutter door with a foot door in it, but you had to open the foot door every time you wanted to open the shutter. Being inherently lazy I like just pressing the button 😁.

DAY 1 OF ISOLATION. Jones Junior has a cough. Not a continuous covid 19 type cough, but an I don’t want to go to school because all of his mates are at home type off cough. Sad eyes and all. He was that bored in school the other day as he was all on his lonesome, that he even phoned me for a chat while I was in work!!! Anyway, Mrs Jonsey works for Public health giving vaccines etc so she tells her boss what’s occurring and is told to self isolate for 14 days. Now if I go to work, it isn’t self isolating so I’ve got to self isolate for 14 days also. My job is going out when you report a smell of gas in your house, or in the road, if your CO alarm goes off, or if for some reason the gas stops flowing. So I phone my boss to explain what’s occurring and here we are. Two frontline personnel sat at home as my boy doesn’t want to go to school, but what can you do. So first things first, I’m not paying for the heating to be on all day so me and the two boys cut up 2 jumbo bags of logs for the burner. No photos. Next, the guy living behind has a load of goats that would rather eat the trees in my garden rather than what ever he feeds them. I’ve told him several times they are escaping but he’s done F all to resolve the problem. I went round yesterday and he told me to F off. I’ve considered reporting him to Defra as none are tagged so they’re not legal but don’t want to start a feud. So Jones Junior the elder and myself reinforced the hedges where they are getting in with sheep fencing and barbed wire. They might still get in, but they’ll struggle to get out due to the height difference. They’ll then have to go down the road and then the knob has a bigger problem on his hands and might do something about it. Next I decided to tackle the mess in the garage. With all this Covid 19 business going on I’m frightened that a downturn in work may mean a rise in thefts. As I’ve got a car transporter trailer for the rally car and a box trailer that I don’t want stolen, I’ve decided to order the new garage door as soon as. As I’ve suddenly got time on my hands, now is the time. My nephew’s Astra rally car is coming to the end of the fabrication stage and most of this lot was still in the garage, so that got cleared out. The tractor needed to be moved over, but was stuck in gear. Removing the gearstick revealed it had somehow jumped the gate with Jones Junior the younger’s over enthusiastic playing. That sorted I moved it over a few feet so the MGZR could fit next to it. So tomorrow I have to make something for Mrs Jonsey for mother’s day as I’ve not bought her anything then I will hopefully start cutting the new foot door that needs to go in before the roller shutter.

DAY 2 OF ISOLATION So I plan to fit the foot door without spending any money as I don’t want to go to the builders merchant. So I’ve got the old back door. It’s an old dark brown upvc door, but it’s cost me nothing so I’m going to use it. I knew I had a lintel left over somewhere from when I built the new garage. It’s 4”, but I need a 6” to suit the blocks. Luckily I had to 4” lintels which happen to be 3” high so I could use 2 lintels turned on their side. I new I had half a bag of cement wrapped in a plastic bag, but it’s about 4 years old from when I built the benches in the new garage. I expected it to be hard as a brick but it wasn’t. It was as good as new. I also hand a bag of sand from about 10 years ago so I had everything I needed to fit the lintels. The door is going to go where this racking is So with that removed, I marked out, drilled through the corners and the cut out a slot for the lintels with a 9” grinder. Cement mixed and lintels fitted You can see the door in the 2nd shot. I then marked out the door and cut the opening. Tomorrow I can knock out the blocks and fit the door. That’s if I can find some screws

After the Mother’s Day gift giving session this morning for the wife, I gave the ultimate gift of leaving her to her own devices and went out the garage. First off I found the long screws and then knocked out the unwanted blocks. It’s amazing how heavy and cumbersome one of these doors is so I removed the pane of glass which made it a lot easier. With the door in the hole, with the door open it wanted to fall over so I used a trolley jack to support it. It didn’t take long to fit and didn’t really fit it that precisely, but it works better now than it ever did when it was our back door. Mrs Jonsey came out later to see the fruits of my labour and was well jealous of my new garage patio area. She did mention about doing some work on the house (I bought a new cooker hood and splash back in the January sales in 2019 and it’s still in the hall😕), but I just glossed over that.

Nice job on recycling the door! Hope lockdowns not too traumatic!
With regard to the trailers might be worth taking the wheels off I your not going to use them for a bit as they seem to be able to thieve anything in any position these days

That’s a good shout. Even when the garage had a shiny roof that leaked everywhere, the walls were never damp. Since being built up, the new part of the rear gable has been damp. All the other walls have a good overhang of the roof, but this has nothing. A few days of good weather and it’s dried out. I’ve got about 18 litres of light grey masonry paint that I bought to paint the garage a few years ago. I painted the front but never got round to the rest. So today was spent painting the new part of the gable. What a laborious job painting block work. It took me all day. I’ll give it a second cost tomorrow, weather permitting. I’ll eventually paint the rest, but before I do it needs to washed with hypochlorite from the farmers coop. It’s about £25 for 20L and it takes all the moss and flakey paint off with no effort. Just hose it down later.

The days have all blurred into one. I gave the wall a 2nd coat. No photo as it looks just the same. My karate is coming on a treat after all that. I removed the old back door about 11 years ago. I’d kept the key safe all this time as I new I would reuse the door. When I fitted the door, I dug out the key and it didn’t bloody work in the lock 😩. I’m either remembering wrong that this is the key or as It’s sat out the back of the garage in the rain for 11 years, the look has seized. It didn’t feel seized, but I couldn’t lock the door. The handle was removed from the door to try and stop the s rotes getting in. I ordered a new one from eBay and that turned up yesterday and was fitted. Less than a tenner with 5 keys. I ordered some expanding foam also to fill the gap around door, and that came today. I think I’ve got enough in there 😁 Over the last 2 days I’ve fitted 2 rear inner wheel arches on my nephews Astra but I ran out of wire before I finished, so needed something else to do. My late father was a coded welder and worked for a company making bellows for amongst other things , the nuclear industry. They were based in a big old factory that built Spitfire bits during ww2. This land was prime building land so they moved to an industrial unit and the land sold off. Amazingly all the tools were being skipped as the new place was a lot smaller and they were just going to buy new? ? So with permission myself and my brother went there on a Saturday morning and I grabbed a 3’ and an 18” sheet metal rollers, a bench guillotine, and a bench drill. One brother had a pillar drill and another bench guillotine the other a 3’ folder. So I’ve had the bench drill about 13 years but have never used it as it was 3 phase. The motor was a 2 speed motor. I’d been looking out for a suitable motor but nothing turned up until a few weeks ago I went to my Father in-laws and he was throwing out an old 60’s washing machine motor. I naturally grabbed it. It was seized, but by oiling the bearings and having a play, it freed off and worked a treat. A few weeks ago I mounted the motor and bought a belt for it. So today I’ve mounted the drill to the bench and can finally use it. The motor is a 1400rpm unit, which is a bit fast really for bigger stuff so I’ve got it on the slowest speed. The original motor was 600 rpm on the slow speed, but beggars can’t be choosers as I’ve only had to pay £4 for the belt. The only issue is it is stiff when you wind it up and down so it does not return on the spring the spring is greased but it could be sticking as the grease is old the shaft isn’t rusted. Anyone got any idea?

I think some drills ive used had an adjustment to control the resistance of rise and fall, if not get plenty of WD40 squirted in see if that frees it off and loosens a bit of the old grease?

Thanks gtviva. I’ve sprayed loads of wd40 down the top. It does not have any rust on the shaft, but good shout on the resistance thing. I’ll take a look tomorrow. The return spring is quite gummed up looking so I’ll give that a wash with some diesel tomorrow

Word of warning with expanding foam, brace the door frame or you could find it bends the frame in the middle and your door no longer fits.
Looking good.

The blocks are hollows so there’s plenty of room for the foam to expand into. Hopefully. I’ll find out tomorrow if I can’t open the door😁

So this morning the foam around the door was removed. Came out tidy. I can now cement the reveals once I get hold of some more sand and cement. I then turned my attention to the bench where I mounted the pillar drill yesterday. Ever thought “ I’ll keep this bit of wood, it’ll come in handy one day”? A few weeks ago as I was turning up on a job in work there was a scrap man throwing a steel tool cupboard onto his van. I gave him £5 for it. It’s home made but is made from 3mm plate so is quite sturdy. By coincidence it was exactly the same height as the bottom of the bench, but it was a tight fit so I lopped 5mm off the legs. I’m going to put all my drills, helicoil sets etc in here so there all in one place and it frees up space in my other tool box. Stacked the wood back tidy. You never now when it will come in handy 😁. Yay a tidy bench This one - not so much😩. I’ll deal with another day. So back to outside. The bit out the back of the garage where we used to keep chickens has been overgrown for about 9 years so all 4 of us Jonses attacked it with hand tools. Little break And then I went over it with the lawn mower. Obviously as is customary when doing this sort of thing, a fire was lit. And that was that. The rest of the family went in whilst I sat and poked the fire with a stick
