Up to date with your tenatus? Also, re the 'asbestos' sheets: are you sure they're asbestos and not just concrete and some other fibre? Yep. Tetnus ok until April 2022. I’m not sure what the sheets are but they are pretty old so I’m assuming they’re asbestos. It would be great if they’re not though. How do you find out?

I had a quick phone around this afternoon for quotes on getting rid of the asbestos sheets. The quotes were £20,£30 and £40 per sheet. Even the cheapest quote is going to cost me £500 to get rid. That’s cheaper than I thought to be honest but I read some threads on the net this afternoon where people were only paying £150 per tonne skip. Obviously not in West Wales though.

Re asbestos. Before you pay out contact your local council who are responsible for waste disposal. Our authority has certain days of the month where you book an appointment and turn up at a nominated landfill free and they bulldoze it in there and then. You have to make sure it's double wrapped in heavy visqueen during transporting (and should be labelled)
Ours is Nottinghamshire County Council btw

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

This is a bit silly as in order to fit it into a bin bag I have to break it up, which you really want to avoid doing, plus it will take me about 8 years to get rid of it all.

I guess its more aimed at people being able to get rid of asbestos bath panels etc rather than garage roofs. As you say though, still got to break it up.

Our local council tip is privately run so they don’t actually want you dropping anything there. You have to take proof of address every time you enter the place incase your not from this county.

Today is my birthday. Yay. I’m now 46. Boo. Anyway Mrs is on a course so I get to do what I want to do. My goal was to remove all the old roofs steel supporting structure. It’s basically 4 x 50mm angle irons running across the building and 2 x 75mm angle irons running the length of the building. This is held up by 4 x 50mm pipes. On top of all this steel is some 50x75mm rotten wood that the sheets were nailed to. The wood wasn’t attached to the steel frame except in a couple of places where the original builder had felt it needed to make it a bit more secure and had used some bailer twine to tie the wood to the steel. Anyway couple of hours with the 9” angle grinder and it was all out How this roof ever stayed up is a miracle. The steel only went an inch in to the wall and none of the sheets were attached to the walls/steel. Next a started to pic up all the curse word from the floor. I’ve got all the old panels that I’ve smashed off the Escort over the years so I’ve hung them on the wall out of the way The trusses are handy too store some of my building materials I have spare I also removed another barrow of moss/soil/cement slops. Tomorrow I’m going to put some lights up

I had to take some stuff to our dump today. Ours is ok. I was checking i could take a mattress and saw their asbestos rules. Ours will take 2 roof panels at a time. Double wrapped but don't have to be broken down to fit in bags. I don't know how regularly you can take 2 down though. Added bonus today as the tips digger driver was loudly playing black sabbaths first album! I guess just burying it is frowned upon?

Hi, Yes, it's very naughty to bury it because it makes it contaminated ground. Although how anyone would know unless they dig it up again, I don't know.

It all ends up buried anyway. It’s only legal if large sums of money have exchanged hands first

That looks a big space now the metal work is out, can you not dig out for a hard standing in front of the doors and encase the sheets in concrete? would that be legal?

The space seems to have quadrupled in size now there is a bit of height to the building. I doubt it would be legal and if I have to dig that area up in the future I’d Still have to deal with it then

I made a start on the lights today. Originally there was 4 (4’ singles, I think) strip lights on the old roof. I have screwed these to the front 4 trusses. I also have a spare 3’ twin strip light with daylight bulbs. I had this with a lead and 3 pin plug on it for something I can’t remember. Anyway I have screwed this to the 5th truss just to get some light in there for now. This will be hard wired with the rest. I made a start running the 1.5 t&e from the fuse box in the rear all through the truss to the light switch at the front of the garage. I then ran out of both cable and clips so I will buy some more this week. Working at height is really not my thing, so all this took a lot longer than it should have. I also reconnected the 16A socket to the fuse box as I had to disconnect it when the old roof came off. I’ve not gone for a load of lights and will only be adding 2 or 3 sockets as this is only a store room. It does have a bench, and I’ve found an old Record vice in amongst the scrap so I’ll fit that. So I’ll have one socket front and back, and one at the bench.

What an improvement nice work and a nice size now it's tidy. Thanks Pete. It was getting tidy, but now my nephew has bought my 2 Astra GTE ‘s (again), and is building them into 1 rally car so there is currently panels everywhere

And God said let there be light, and there was Light. Well it wasn’t God, it was my nephew trying to build the Astra in the garage with just one strip light and a lead lamp. So with 4 lights working from a light switch at the front of the garage, I continued with the clean up. I’ll wire the 5th light that is currently running off a 13amp plug at a later date. Another very full wheel barrow of soil, twigs and cement slops swept up so more of the floor can be seen. And more panels up on the wall. Sean has cut the old doorskins off my old grass car so I thought I’d keep one as a momento. I kept the screen visor with my younger brother’s garage name as well but no photo. Here’s the Astra with new panels going on if your interested. All the plastics are now here so they can hopefully go up soon too.
