Inspired by some of the amazing builds on here recently, and also partly because the SD1 Rover seems to be quite popular right now, I thought I'd share my latest purshase with everyone, and plans for the future. I've always loved SD1's, the first car I drove was a 2600s and I've had several now, a couple of V8's, a Twin Plenum Vitesse and quite a few 2600s! In fact Jim on here with the Police SD1 has my old doors/bonnet/bootlid on his drift car! I've had a couple of years off from classic/retro cars as lift/employnent/health got in the way but I find myself in a position now where I can starting get back into it...which brings me to this - Bought on eBay last week, I've not even seen it yet aside from the auction photos. As I write this it's on a trailer back to Chesterfield and it'll hopefully be here by the time I finish work at 4pm. So...plans. I've got a lot. Purists look away now as I won't be keeping it standard. Interior wise I love it so that will all be staying, and aside from slightly lower and possibly different wheels the exterior should stay fairly standard. It's under the surface where I plan on making changes and I'll document those as I go! Immediate plans are to get the car MOT'd, I have the cars last failure sheet so I'll be using that as a work list to crack on. I notice Rimmer Brothers have a sale on...

I think the big question is V8 or no V8?
Or will it be a suprise as things progress and happen?

Oh it'll definitely be a V8. I love the 2600s, but I have more love for the Rover V8. I've bought this Janspeed Twin Turbo engine for it so after it's running And driving I'll be fitting that. I've had a call to say the car is at my house....Can't wait to finish work now!

It was way too dark to look at the car last night, and I may have had a few beers so I have to admit I only gave it a quick glance as I walked past on my way inside. This morning (just) I got up and decided to see what I'd bought. Firstly...the battery was dead. It started up briefly and sounded good through the stainless exhaust (bonus) but died and wouldn't turn over...just the horrible rattle and dim lights of a flat battery. I'll add it to the list. In the poring rain ive given it a thorough clean to see what's what, it was thick with dead leaves and moss and looked mostly green, but I think you'll agree it looks better now. Then came one of my favourite bits...emptying it out to see what parts there are. I'm happy to say all the missing side trims, bonnet vents, badges are all here, along with a very good rear bumper to replace the damaged one. There's a while host of other useful bits too, new door weather strips and electrical items. I'm compiling a bit of a work/bits needed list which I'll post here, it'll keep me on track and stop me forgetting anything.

That looks remarkably solid. Is that the oxblood colour two tone interior?

Apart from the couple of odd panels that looks really clean, nice Xmas present!

That looks remarkably solid. Is that the oxblood colour two tone interior? So far so good. Lots of little bits that need attention but it does looks a solid base. The interior could be Oxblood...you'll probably know better than me! It's a shame about the rip in the dashboard, and it needs a good clean and fettle, but not bad overall.

Looks a decent shell. The dash has gone exactly in the same place as mine, easy enough to change though. Will you be adding Vitesse spoilers? If the 6 pot head carrier/head assembly is any good and not rattling its bits off when you upgrade to the V8 let me know as I need a spare 6 pot head/carrier.

Very nice, as said already once those odd panels are painted and the bumper swapped it will look perfect, the wheels and no Vitesse spoilers look is just right, especially for the other engine, great looking cars SD1's

Think it’s claret rather than ox blood. I might know someone with a good one. I’ll ask and get back to you.

Nice one! We had a 2600 VDP with that interior, but in royal blue.
Don't want to put ideas in your head, but I've always wanted to see someone take that interior, sort out the build quality and wrap the dash and door panels in stitched leather.
One of the tricks I learned when we had ours was that you can strengthen the door cards by painting the rear with fibreglass resin. Worked well on ours.

The rear doorcards are a mess but I'd like to keep them if I can. I need to get the doors painted and rebuild the internals before I worry about fitting the cards. I'm not sure about the Spoilers, most of the SD1s I've had in the past have ended up with a Vitesse rear at least, and this VDP already has the rear arch spats but for now it'll be staying without one.

The engine is really good actually, it has the period external oil feed to the cam, and sounds very healthy! Pm me when you start to see me take the engine out on here and we'll work something out.

So, today I made a bit of progress on the car. Not massive amounts but keep chipping away at it! The battery responded well to a charge, so this morning I started the car up and let it get warm. All the lights work well apart from the N/S front foglight, so that's not bad. There are some niggles in the wiring, a couple of broken switches, non functional rear windows, heater not staying on unless you hold it etc but these are to be expected and it's better than I thought. Next Job was the front end. It was full of mould and leaves, flaking and the bumper is absolutely ruined. I've removed the bumper and grill to start cleaning and painting as needed and I need to start looking for a replacement. I think I'm going to get a pair of wings too as they're really starting to go. I had hoped to replace the rear bumper with the spare one that came with the car, and although it's serviceable one end cap is broken and the side mounts are missing so it'll need work. A job for next time I guess!
