If the 2.6 is healthy I would leave it - unless you have something other than the V8 in mind?
I need to change the rear brake flexi hose on mine - I had a braided item which melted due to a bad earth.

I've always wondered how well the 2.6 would respond to further tweeks, pretty sure I read somewhere that is developement was strangled when it was found out it would actually be a lot more powerful than the V8 relatively easily ? Anyway, they sound nice anyway

Anyway, they sound nice anyway Yes I’ve heard the same. Apparently the development cam shaft was really good and it was as quick as the carb v8’s so the production cam is really tame. Unfortunately no one makes a decent cam for the 6 cylinder now and although a custom could be made, it would be expensive.

That looks really tidy on the outside. Is it solid underneath?
Twin turbo would be cool! Would you fit it as it was done back in the 80's or do some upgrades with modern tech and know-how?

The engine is really good actually, it has the period external oil feed to the cam, and sounds very healthy! Pm me when you start to see me take the engine out on here and we'll work something out. Thats brill, will do mate. I have a few bumpers in my shed Phil, If you can give me till Sunday I can post pics. My shed are pretty much full of parts for SD1's That would be amazing cheers, the spare rear bumper is repairable but I do need a front quite desperately! If the 2.6 is healthy I would leave it - unless you have something other than the V8 in mind? I've got a period Janspeed twin turbo V8, complete and running ready to go into the car! I love the 6 cylinder, most of the previous SD1's have been 2.3/2.6 but I just wanted something a little different. There is a guy on the SD1 club forum that races a 2600, I think he's in Spain. Its fitted with a tubular manifold, different cam, special inlet with triple webers etc. It sounds amazing, and if the videos are anything to go by it goes well too!

Yeah it's not bad, a little bit needed around the rear trailing arm links but the boot corners, sills, windscreen surround and strut tops all seem good. I think I'll be fitting a pair of wings and repairing the rear arches as they're starting to go, and a few other localised repairs then she'll be off to the painters. The Twin turbo engine is an old Janspped conversion with the carbs bolted to the front of the Turbos!! I'll be fitting it like that for simplicity, just tweeking a few bits here and there.

I've ground to a halt on mine whilst I decide how I'm going to fit the intercooler across the front. The latest plan is looking like building a 3.9 or having my 4.0 block sorted with the P38 short timing cover, then I can slide the radiator further back into the engine bay and fit a large intercooler in the place of the radiators original position. Got plenty of other stuff I need to do first, then there's upgrading the back axle to fit the LSD and disc brakes....

It's true that they're never really done though, there's always something to improve or modify. I had a couple of hours this afternoon after finishing work, managed to strip off all the brackets/mounts/headlights and front undertray/spoiler. Started to lose the light so called it a day, but I'd like to get new front wings on and all the front cleaned up over the next couple of weeks.

Phil, here are some pics of the bumpers I have A rear bumper that is in really good shape structurally but would need a clean and possibly a coat of paint to freshen it up a bit. I do have a couple of front bumpers. One has had some minor repairs but will need a bit more and paint (The one furthest from the camera) Not perfect but wouldnt take much to be usable. And one that has lost all its brackets but has chrome to repair the other one.

Looks a decent shell. The dash has gone exactly in the same place as mine, easy enough to change though. Will you be adding Vitesse spoilers? If the 6 pot head carrier/head assembly is any good and not rattling its bits off when you upgrade to the V8 let me know as I need a spare 6 pot head/carrier. I saw a SMART repair undertaking on a Rover 600 Dash. The vinyl /plastic was torn into a hole from some poor packing of large object carried on front seat. The next time I was in the car it had been repaired using a SMART repair. The colour was spot on, the grain texture almost spot on, but what really impressed me was the flexibility of the repair matched the rest of the dash. Many folk would not have noticed the repair, it really was good. I noticed because I was aware of the great hole that was there for the previous 6 months. you've probably got enough to be getting in with, but when you arrive at the point of dealing with the Dash, might be worth a try before undertaking a complete swop.

A sprayer I used to work with used to be a smart repairer on dashboards and the pics he showed me were amazing but quite pricey to do. New dash boards are available from Rimmers but only in grey so need re-colouring. Around £70 if I remember rightly.

A bit of a boring update, but an update all the same. I've cleaned, wire brushed and treated all the front end brackets, then painted them with black enamel. I'm hopefully collecting a fair few parts this weekend, and if things go to plan I'll be cutting/drilling the old wings off before then so I can crack on!

Great buy Phil, looks like a solid car. Keep us all up to date on how things are going, be great to see photos a progress on the Rover SD1 Facebook forum. I also bought my Vitesse a couple of months ago blind from ebay with no MOT, had a bit of a result, put it through soon as I got it home and it passed. just shows you, you can still get some good bargains on the bay. Managed to enjoy a good few miles before the winter set in. Paul

Nice Vitesse, its amazing the difference a pair of spats and a boot spoiler make in my eyes. Still not certain whether to fit the boot spoiler and deep Vitesse chin to mine yet or just sell em off
