I honestly cant think of what to say. Edit. Thought of something to say. Looks like he's pulled over a Maxi. Slight overkill there I feel, even if it is a HL judging by the hubcaps.

Checked, and I see that the liver run hasn't been posted.

Leicestershire Police were still using these when I started driving in 1978. A mate’s dad was a Traffic Officer, he quite liked them IIRC.

These were the earliest area cars/traffic cars I remember. After these they got Vectras (both generations), then Volvo V70s, now BMW 3, 5 and X5s. West Yorkshire Police were a late adopter of the battenburg livery compared to other forces, they had the yellow stripe up until the late 2000s.

How strange that this thread should resurrect itself on the very day I pick this beastie up. Genuine ex-West Midlands CID Pug 306DL. I have no idea what it was tasked with, but with just 71bhp of 1868cc diesel under the bonnet, it certainly didn’t spend 12 years on the force chasing crims. 😂

I had to have a little chat with them one evening in an empty car park I had been doing things in... 🤦🏼♂️😂

My old ex-Greater Manchester Police P38. The only thing that gave it away were the calibrated speedo (RS Nottingham) and the LR Special Vehicles plate on the bonnet slam-panel. No extra holes for anything anywhere, no additional wiring, that I found, although it did have traction control (as I found out traversing the quarry we're just climbing out of) which I believe wasn't standard on the base 4.0L. Haven't got a clue what it was used for. I parted company with it not long before moving to Singapore and it now seems to have disappeared off the databases, I hope someone rescued the replacement engine I fitted, it was a beut!

With regards to the ex-GMP Range Rover, if it was fitted with the calibrated speedo, but no external holes in the body panels, that immediately points to the fact that this vehicle was not used as a liveried traffic vehicle. It would stand every chance of being a Driving School vehicle, which would be commandeered, as and when Traffic stuffed their own vehicles and a replacement was required urgently. Just transfer the whistles and bells across onto the unmarked vehicle. With regards to the Lagonda, again it would have been marked up and loaned out by the manufacturers as a publicity stunt. Used to happen all the time by most manufacturers. Publicity and nothing more. Don't forget Lotus's offerings, which would have been ideal for checking wagon hubcaps, and an absolute pig to get in and out of.

Probably a publicity stunt Greater Manchester police vehicles Remember Sussex police having a cossie like the above. Our local Bobby had a Talbot Sunbeam. That was replaced by an Austin Metro, then I think he went up in the world with a Peugeot 309 before being pensioned off. Also remember watching a mate of my brothers p*ssing in the petrol tank of a Montego police car parked outside my house from my bedroom window, and then sat on a wall watching the officers return to the car.

Great thread, and with YouTube links above, which i have watched during a nightshift old cops programmes rabbit hole, here is another worthwhile cop programme to watch when cars were cars... and started themselves if stared at long enough

Wiltshire Constbulary still have this one registered as an active car. Sadly it only ever gets rolled out for PR. I know we all remember the cop cars of our youth (SD1 in my case) but I think these will always hold a special place in the rear view mirror.
