What does the forum think about the e46 BMW? Some of these are 20 years old now, is it a retro ride? I miss my old E30 and find the e36 boring, so picked this up today as a project car, a 1999 323ci. If there is interest I'll start a project thread for it. Cheers.

You forget how old some 'modern' cars are I would read a build thread. Suddenly craving a BMW myself and keep watching E38's. Many bargains out there

I was in the local scrapyard a few weeks ago having a look about, and kept thinking to myself "I remember these when they were new". The E38 is my favorite shape of 7 series, used to blast around in a 740 a few years ago and I still miss it. A better shape than the e32, which never looked quite right to me.

Age wise might be, but I think that the e46 has aged really well and doesn't appear to be a retro ride in my personal opinion. My wifes (again in my books) e49 and my Mercedes W210 are more retro than your car. Both are built in 1999 too.... But, you love your new project and to you it might be (semi??) retro. I would love to see what you do with it. So, yes, I am in for the ride!

I guess that is the problem with the E46, they are still around in big numbers so not an unusual sight.

No.
They’re just cheap cars somewhere close to the bottom of their depreciation curve.
Cue lots of speculative chancers trying to big them up as ‘future retros’ or ‘modern classics’

They are not far off, if you think some of our younger members weren't even born when these were released.
Probably one of the best BMW'S for aging well though, the face lift still manages to look modern to me. They ride so nicely as well.

I say why reject something as retro just because to us old farts it's a modern. As said by others there are members on here who weren't even born when that BMW was new. Not forgetting future Retro-riders too! It's all relative really and as time marches on does RR want to ride the wave and cater for all or just the few? Unless we start sub-folders in Reader's Rides for example 40's-50's, 60's-70's, 80's-90's 00's etc?
carat 3.6, if you start a thread I'll be along for the ride!

I bought an E46 because its old-ish, cheap and reliable.
I have to drive to client sites and its still seen as a good professional car no one looks twice at in a company car park, rather than turning up in 'an old banger'
For me, not a retro ride just yet.

In answer to the question, probably not but who gives a......
I really like the look of these (a 6-cyl wagon would be perfect for me) but around these parts good ones are nigh-on impossible to find. They are usually rough, rusty and badly looked after.

I normally use my daily commute/if I see any at the shops radar to gauge it.
Couple a day: not classic yet
The odd one every now and then: nearly there
Never/rarely: classic
On this basis, I still see a couple a day being used as daily hacks which are a bit rough around the edges. OR parked in a Waitrose car park (usually a touring) owned by someone who’s had it since new, but also has a brand new BMW as well or a new golf...

I wouldn't concern yourself about doing a thread as you'll have it sold soon!

pOG's Rule of Retro applies here. I have one, I've had it for a loooong time (7+ years). If I were to sell it (a thought which crosses my mind periodically as I don't really use it very much these days), then you can guarantee that they will immediately become sought after and pricey. Keep it, and they will remain in the 'old banger' category. Deeply lovely bit of kit though. I'll hang on to it for a while yet. Sorry (not sorry).

It does have zero rust though which was the big sell.

Simon, no rust? Winner, winner. Can't recall the last time I've seen a spotless shell. Yeah, a V8 would be nice.
Keep us all posted.

For me retro status isn't achieved by gaining age, it's aimed at a particular time period, I wasn't even in my teens when these BMW's were released and I don't see them or cars of similar age, my forester included as retro, they're in a different group name/category which I can't articulate or allude to right now.
When I think of retro, I think of the opening to Rugrats, video and casette tapes, tron and the celica supra if that makes sense, it's a style of design.
E46's are great though, my friend is one of those that had one and didn't really put any effort into maintaining it properly only to sell it on for pence before it was slid into a curb, as I suspect most are these days.
