Retro "not yet" and probably not for some time I have a E36 328i sport touring had it for 8 years and the wife has a E36 328i convertible But I don't even consider the E36 as retro yet even though they stopped making them over 18 years ago We've both had E46s and I had a E91 as well but still gone back to the E36

I wouldn't mind if you start a thread on it, especially if you go beyond the wash & polish and show serious work/mods.
Used to own a 323i SE saloon, thinking of that straight six pull still makes me smile. Not the quickest but so smooth and effortless, I still haven't got over it yet.
Which is odd, because my current car has a v8 with more than twice the power...

Retro probably not yet, But one in good shape will start going up in value, don’t remember the last time I saw one that was in good shape, they have become a budget motor now so people don’t really look after them. This is mine Needs a respray and some rust sorted too.

I see this as a modern car, but these were out real close to when my 9000 was made, so are of the same era.
Trouble is that the late 90's/early 2000's were when computers began to be the most important component, and thats where my interest in cars stops dead.
When the computer basically knows the status of every single component it becomes more of a problem than an advantage.
Totally split on this one ...

I am definitely on the fence. I have a convertible E36, and it seems so archaic in its electrical systems and spec for a 1999 built car. This also makes is an easy fix, no CANBus, no OBD, and no second oxygen sensor to detect no cat Conversely, the E90 is one of the most horrendously unreliable and hard to work on pieces of junk I have ever come across.

Retro, not yet. I think it's not only age, nd that it takes a car a few more years to be retro or classic than it once did, but also the design and feel. That Beemer is modern, my fiesta (although also not retro yet) is 18 years old but feels a fair bit older, as a majority of the design is carried over from the 1996 model which carries a lot from the 1989 model (standard ford!) Also I think retro is getting closer to 25-30 years old these days, just my thoughts.

They are not far off, if you think some of our younger members weren't even born when these were released. Probably one of the best BMW'S for aging well though, the face lift still manages to look modern to me. They ride so nicely as well. This . The thing with the E46 is that it showed us that evolution of car design was sometimes the way forward, not revolution! The 968 was a similar deal to the 944, and they instantly gained classic status, albeit not quite so much in the public eye. For me, they are very much on the edge of retro, but I would say that. Look at it this way. Years ago, Dolomites when 20 years old and Stags around a similar age were considered 'classics', partly because they hit the bottom of the depreciation curve, despite one member mentioning the opposite here. I remember Stags and TR7s being in 90s and 00s magazines often, partly down to their build quality. The truth is, our perceptions of classic car have changed. Years ago, if a car became cheap, and was cheap for what seemed an eternity, like your MGBs, Dolomites (yes, they were below £10,000 for a Sprint before, they weren't even half that too long ago!), they were considered retro/classic. The ever-appreciating cars became 'Prestige' cars. Lately, with house prices climbing higher and high, and this having an knock-on effect with cars and their values, I'd say our perceptions have changed. There are not many 30+ cars people on lower incomes can afford anymore, especially new drivers, which vitesseefi has alluded to previously with his son and buying a Triumph. P The truth is the E46, as did many cars of that generation, signalled a shift, a little like the 90s. Gone was atrocious build quality from most manufacturers, and in came longevity. Yes, I know the E46 have their faults, but compared to the yesteryear, they're a big improvement. The 00s will be an interesting era of car to watch, but now, I'm out of time. Here's to 20 years of the E46 .

ChasRI wonder will we ever see the diesel ones becoming classic in the same vein as your W124? The M47/57 is really a decent bit of kit, but they seem to be use at the very budget end of motoring for some and this may be what will kill them all off

In context, as I understand it, the whole notion of the Retro Rides forum, essentially, was to take something old and utilise a more modern approach to how you would modify and create something for the now. In essence, if you take, as an example, a 1974 MK 3 Cortina and shove a modern engine in it, utilize the newer technologies and construction to make the car handle and drive better than the manufacturer ever envisaged then you are recreating something old with a modern take. The new Fiat 500 is archetypal 'Retro' but a 1968 500 that has been modernised could also be classed as such. Over the years, the word 'Retro' has been given a new lease of life, its meaning expanded to encompass all the more a way of life, design and thought and so it has been nailed to cars. An E46 is as retro as a MK1 Focus or a 1999 Mondeo and, I suspect, only 2.4% of all patrons of this forum would agree that the term could never be applied to such cars for, at least, another decade or so. Maybe it's time to stop getting hung up on a word and look at the bigger picture which is having fun with cars, the reason why we are all here, surely. A modified E46 will attract attention, people like to see modified cars. However, it ain't retro!

I did write a long reply citing why IMO the 'retroness' clasification has changed of cars, which included things like the tax free classification going from 25 years>Pre-73>40 years old and the knock on effect that had. Also down was the fact the cars live longer these days in addition to once one hits a certain age, new cars just become 'meh', meaning older ones seems new despite sometimes being 8 years old.
But back on track I've not seen a prefacelift E46 for a long time. That's one with amber lights all round. I saw one for the first time in ages today. I wondered if it was a retrofit, but, nope, it was a very well kept early model.
