Afternoon, Some of you may recall a thread I started a little while ago when I was hankering after a Scirocco - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/205755/wanted-mk2-scirocco-golfFor those of you that didn’t read it, I wanted a Scirocco and ended up with a Mk2 Golf. This Mk2 Golf in fact... Now I’m sure you’ll all agree that it looks pretty good in that picture. I think so too. However that picture was taken about 5 years ago when the Golf was still in daily use by my Brother. Since then it’s been parked on gravel in my back garden and hasn’t moved! A couple of people have mentioned it when it’s been spotted in the background of my Caddy Van project thread - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/201579/caddy-van-project-engine-mountsAnyway, my Brother finally realised that he was never going to get the time to sort it out. Mainly because he doesn’t live with me anymore and has moved 20 miles away. He said he was going to sell it as it is and mentioned how much he was going to ask for it. Well, that was all the prompting I needed and I bought it off him there and then Well that was a couple of months ago, and because my Caddy has been on the driveway and hasn’t been moveable the Golf has just stayed where sitting, waiting for me to get around to it! During the week my van went off to have some custom engine mounts made so as soon as I finished work today I decided it was time to get the Golf onto the driveway and give it a look over. Unfortunately the Golf doesn’t start at the moment. It’s got a knackered Toad alarm and immobiliser which stops it from doing anything and even once you get past that it would appear a mouse has been having a go at the wiring so the fuel pump won’t prime! This meant the Golf would need to be towed onto the driveway. This was a bit of a challenge by myself but armed with my trusty 530i and a tow rope, slowly but surely it made its way back onto the drive Now unfortunately where it’s been sat for a few years next doors ivy has attached itself to the drivers side, so once it was on the drive this is what it looked like I decided the first thing it needed was jet washing off. That took a good 40 minutes to get everything off and it looks surprisingly presentable again That will do for an introduction My Daughter has just arrived home so I’ll update this again later

Brilliant work on getting this and rescuing it. What a waste seeing it just sitting there.

Now the idea with this car is to get it running and then sell my BMW. It’s a 530i and costs an absolute bomb to run as well as every single repair costing me an arm and a leg. The Golf does everything I need of a car and will fit the kids in If I get a chance tomorrow morning I’ll get some of the lower dash out and have a look at the loom and see if it has in fact been chewed or if it’s the alarm or even the fuel pump at fault.

I found this video on my phone. This was about 8 years ago at Santa Pod. My Brother had only recently had the 1.8t fitted.

Lol, replied to your post on fb, thought it looked familiar.
Do you know what tank it's running?
If it's still running mk2 tank, get it swapped out for a mk3 gti tank.

Haven't tried to bolt mine up yet as I want to do a few bits first. Also does away with the pump under the car

Also does away with the pump under the car If you're planning on going for 300bhp joem83, take out the MK3 GTI pump and fit n early MK3 VR6 4BAR pump - identical fitment just higher pressure. This is the one everyone running bigger than 250bhp and doesn't want the whine of a Walbro pump.

But it's not really needed until then and makes no difference on stock motor until the fpr is swapped out. Mine was holding solid on 2.5 bar when running.
Not planning on running much above 200bhp tbh as it's more than enough for road use. Mk2's don't have the brst chassis to start with lol

Once I’ve got this up and running and reliable I’m going to be upping the power to approx 200bhp. I seem to remember that with the standard AGU 150bhp it was nippy but not quick.

Ko3s and a remap should see easy 200bhp. Keeps driveability as it's still quite a small turbo.

The idea of this Golf is to turn the exterior largely back to standard. Th way it currently looks is how my brother wanted it. Although it’s nice it’s not really my cup of tea and definitely not daily material. With that in mind I stuck the Azev wheels up on eBay last night and by 10am today they had sold. Luckily I have already bought a set of 15inch BBS RA’s so I stopped at my lockup on the way home and collected them. I then spent an hour with a rubber mallet trying to get the Azev’s off the car haha. They had become part of it! Anyway, the guy has just left with his new wheels so I took a couple of pics in the dark of the Golf with its new shoes I love them, although the G60 arches make them look ridiculous. Good job I’ve bought a set of standard GTi arches today I’ll also be replacing the tyres with a slightly higher profile for added comfort (does that make me sound old?) and I’ve got a set of Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs to go on it too

I took half a days holiday today (got to use it all up!) so after going into town for some bits I headed home and decided to try and figure out why the Golf doesn’t start. When turning the ignition on the fuel pump should prime for a few seconds. It doesn’t do this anymore. I found some evidence of mice living in the car at some stage so figured they’d taken a liking to the wiring and nicked a bit. I figured the best thing to do was to get the car in the air and check what’s going on with the in-line pump under the car. Once it was as high as I could get it and a couple of axle stands we’re underneath I squeezed myself under there to find the pump. First thing I did was to connect the pump directly to a battery and see if it burst into life. It made a couple of half arsed noises but didn’t really do much pumping. Looks like it’s the pump then! Just to be sure I checked for a live feed to the wiring plug with the ignition on. Thankfully there is one which means the mice have left the wiring alone Seeing as my diagnosis powers had worked today I figured I better get the pump off the car so I could get a part number etc. I was dreading this bit. All the fixings looked like they were going to snap off as soon as I showed them the ratchet. I carried on anyway because whatever happened the pump needed to come out! To my surprise nothing snapped and within a few minutes the pump was off and on the bench Unfortunately the three Philips head screws that hold the pump into the housing were rotten and I had no chance of undoing them like that. I started drilling through them but figured it was going to take me ages. So out came the Dremel to cut some slots into the screw heads instead It did the trick and within a few minutes the pump was out The next dilemma is do I replace it with another identical pump or do I upgrade it to something a bit beefier? I don’t know if there is anything bigger that will still fit in the housing. Time to do some research.

As long as the replacement does 3bar of pressure it should be ok. I'm sure people were using something like a bosch 044 or something, but don't quote me on exact model

oh and for some reason I believe E36 BMW ones work, and W124 Mercedes too, though the plugs and pipe ends might need modding

I used to have the original swirl pot/fuel pump set up on my Mk2 Gti engined Mk1 Caddy. I found that the primary low pressure pump wasn't man enough to keep it supplied with enough fuel. I took me three fuel pumps to work this out! I have just converted it to an inline fuel pump. Main reason was the original pump's that fit into the swirl pot are £80! Inline ones are significantly cheaper and easier to change. Facet do a nice compact supply pump for around £30.
