Bulbs arrived. Color always gets washed out but left is LED, right incandescent. Nice and bright. I think I may get the orange ones for the front. Phil

Night time test. The lights illuminate normally on the main part of the lens, make a bright ring on the bezel and again bright in the center. They are nice and bright, and the difference between dim and bright is adequate. Trying to figure if I want to get the longer version of the same lamps so they sit deeper into the light itself. Phil

I had a think. The bulbs I bought have a little lens on top with 3 LED chips underneath, which was causing a concentrated triangular blob of light in the middle of the lamp by the retro-reflector. I scuffed the lens down to diffuse the light a little. Result? Much improved light distribution. Happy with that. Phil

You realise that you'll never get 100 point Gold standard from the Konkours Komittee now you have used the lights of Satan? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

HAL, it's cold, start the engine. I'm sorry Dave, but I can't do that. My name isn't Dave, HAL. Yes Dave, I know it isn't. &c.

People have become used to retina-searinly bright brake lights. These aren't stupidly bright but they certainly are brighter than the regular 21/5's that were in it, and the brightness difference with the tail lights on to brake or turn is improved. Last night's test proved better- usually people tailgate me when I slow to turn into a street, last night for four times I made a turn off the highway they didn't come flying up to the back of the car so I'll buy that for a dollar. This morning started cool and foggy. So, a real-world test, the Cold Morning. I left it idling on choke (can you tell?) and tested the screen defrost. It actually works acceptably well, which is a boon for a 70 year old car! Went get coffee and McMuffin. Sun behind me, and the car behind was evidently able to see my turn signal because they backed off when I put it on to turn. Great success! Do need a new alternator though. Belt is quiet enough for me not to bother with it any more. Phil

Daylight test. Left hand indicator on. Definitely an improvement! I'm going to keep these bulbs in. I was thinking about a high level brake light, but I'd have to run a wire from the brake light switch for it. If I can find one that doesn't look stupid and doesn't get in the way too much, it might end up with one, yes. Phil

Could you not splice in from a rear lamp? or does the indicator circuit mess it up?

Could you not splice in from a rear lamp? or does the indicator circuit mess it up? The brake light switch connects to the indicator switch. From there, it selects the front lights to blink and the brake light on each side is disconnected and connected to the flasher relay when you select it. So, there's no solid brake light signal going to the back of the car by default. Phil

People have become used to retina-searingly bright brake lights. Phil Same rear lighting as was on the Healey. One lamp for side, brake and turn lights using one bulb that was dimmer than a late series Red Dwarf. This was before all these off-the-shelf solutions that you young whippersnappers can get next day from Amazon. I had to research and find some US market Harley Davidson LED 'Dog-Eye' clusters that did all three functions with individual LEDS ![](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/kev_the_mole/ledlights.jpg) As this was 14 years ago aftermarket LED lighting was pretty new and I took the car to a Healey Club** meet and Konkours. Never going to win as it's got a sodding great V8 in it so I was always lumped in Modifieds/Replicas/Scum class. After demonstrating my 'possible to see in bright sunlight' lights I swear I heard one of the old buffers mutter "Witchcraft". Had a really good day because they re-wrote the club rules for the next year banning LED lights ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ** No longer a member - Groucho Marx syndrome ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I fitted a strip led on the inside of the glass using a couple of strips of aluminium pushed into the gap between the glass and the screen, hardly noticeable when it is not operating.

Oddly, I didn't get much kick-back from the rivet-counters mainly because they're just direct replacement bulbs.
I was looking at the LED strips that bikers use to put their lights over the wheel- they're small, super bright and slightly flexible in a semi-clear package.

Lights have come out great.
Simple solution I would never have thought of to change diffusion of light inside lense with a bit of sanding.

Phil That's what the strip inside the rear window above is., it can flash orange on either end with the indicators as well.

The car had been stuttering and running rich periodically during driving, and was slow to pick up revs.
Pulled the needle mechanism lid off.. sure enough, the needle plunger was sticking. Oiled that up and reassembled after oiling everything else up, went to try start the car and flattened the battery on the third attempt to start it.
I think that battery has just about had it, coupled with the alternator not charging well.
Battery is on charge, managed to get it running and the smoke blown out of it.
