Today, I took the alternator bracket apart and added in a bit of forward backwards adjustment. Correct fan belt on it now, lines up very well. Doesn't slip any more so charges better. The piece I ordered arrived in. Under hood light. This is the 1952 version, I picked it because it has a nice glass cover to protect the bulb. The 1951 is just a cover over a bulb in free air. Lift the hood up and the switch is activated and the light comes on. Quite happy with that. Phil

That’s a nice touch.

Keep thinking about fitting under-bonnet lights to mine.

You do take some nice photos Phil,
This last shot could be a movie still capture.
Under hood lights are functional and in keeping with the car’s build.

I just wish the road hadn't been so busy yesterday. For a foggy Sunday morning the roads were like Le Mans.

Currently looking at alternator rebuild kits. Doing the belt yesterday showed that the bearings on it are getting a bit rough, and it's also a bit random as to when it wants to start charging.
It's got a 3½" pulley on it, 2½" ones are available for low RPM applications like tractors which is ideal. It doesn't charge at hot idle so I think that's a worthy upgrade.

I would think a rebuild and a smaller pulley would be a good idea.

I can't think of any modern car that my friends and family own that has such a useful feature Spurred on by Phil's efforts, I've ordered up a LED strip which comes with wiring, fuse and push switch. It'll just sit nicely under the bonnet.

I can't think of any modern car that my friends and family own that has such a useful feature Last family car that I remember having one was a 1988 Audi 80. They fell out of fashion. I rewired it to come on with the lights, rather than just when the hood is open. Phil

Probably because the average consumer doesn't bother lifting their bonnet on the side of the road, they just wait for roadside assist.

Today was an alignment and adjustment day. First I set the hood stops so the grille lines up again; the rubber bumpers I fitted had squashed down a little. Worked on getting the belt running absolutely true on the alternator. That worked well, but the belt is still noisy. It looks slightly off because the photo is from a slight angle and the top bracket of the alternator isn't straight. In reality the pulleys line up. I had to move the alternator forwards 1/8" and tilt it back a shade. Phil

Got fed up in the sunshine driving the car and people following closely and seemingly missing the brakes or indicators. So, I have ordered a super bright pair of LED bulbs. I put the ones from the Renault in it for a little while but they were just too dim. The rear lights have no reflectors, they rely on the lens to distribute the light. So, the ones I ordered have a few LED elements that point out the "top" of the bulb through a lens, coupled with a fairly decent number around the periphery. My main concern is that a lot of these cheap-ish bulbs tend to be bright on the tail light setting, and a marginal fraction brighter when you put the brakes on, the ratio between the two being fairly poor. Proof will be in the test. Phil

Could you put a resistor in to dull the tails if needed?
If a resistor is the correct bit of electrical majickery I'm thinking of.

Readjusted the headlights tonight because the driver's side had wobbled low through driving. Went for a quick blez around the block to warm it up properly and put a bit of charge back in the battery after it was sat for 10 minutes with the headlights on. Light aim is good, the throw down the street is adequate and I'm not dazzling anybody.
Turned right at the light just as the traffic light changed- ended up having to floor it to 55. That's the hardest I've driven the car to date and it's actually not bad once it picks up revs. The exhaust goes through a few harmonics because at low RPM it sounds like it's about to go pop, but once you've got the revs up it sounds about the same again! It does sound nice on song though... despite that, I am not going to push it that hard again if I don't have to.
I'll say this though- it rivals a V12 for smoothness going through the revs. There's no vibration, only exhaust note and road noise. Quite surreal!
