Just drove down to Cut Off and back. Car started to get hesitant under light throttle so either the points are starting to close up or the condenser is going out. Heavy throttle it accelerates well.
Once it's cooled off a little I'll check.
That could account for the abysmal fuel economy recently....

Trailing points had closed up a little. Adjusted them back out again. Fixed a vacuum leak on the vacuum advance pipe (loose union). Test drive soon. Phil

Significant improvement.
Light throttle feels a lot more effortless, if that makes sense.

Took the old brake master apart. Seen worse. Think that'll clean up as a spare with new seals. Phil

Electronic ignition conversion ASAP!

Electronic ignition conversion ASAP! Why? In 20 seconds I had repaired the fault. If I was going to do that, it would be full-on computerized mapped ignition, with the potential for fuel injection. Phil

I meant a Pertronix kit to get rid of the points, full on mapped & injected would be cool though.

I meant a Pertronix kit to get rid of the points, full on mapped & injected would be cool though. This is a dual-points setup, so one set closes, the other opens. Halves the load and adds a little more dwell for high speed running... Well, it halves the points load in this case. Same setup as fitted to Corvettes and the like (same distributor used for decades). Mapped ignition, with knock sensing would be good- not that it is particularly prone to knock but being able to get the timing accurate to take advantage of the very long stroke the engine has. Single point fuel injection with lambda feedback, able to operate in closed loop would be fantastic. Could even then put a catalytic converter on it and stop the unburned hydrocarbons smell it has when you're following behind. I should imagine heady figures such as 15mpg might even be attainable. Now you are talking! Megasquirted straight 8 FTW! Nick I would have to lean heavily on the A-Series crowd though for multipoint fuel injection. The intake runners are siamesed to keep the length of the engine down. Phil

As much as it would be fun, I think this would be better suited to an equal-length-runner exhaust, long branch- plus twin carbs.
It's never going to be a hotrod but the stock breathing can definitely be improved upon.

hi Phil , having done a bucket load of work on the dyno on grahams seq Siamese coded mini , including flowbench testing / designing an inlet he made from carbon fibre , i would say you would get good results with a simple wet manifold system phil , not as good as full siamese ,, but well worthwhile .especially with such short cam timing /low overlap. this is grahams research thread on siamese code , i don't think anyone is near him on torque/boost level. www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=611675Regards robert

I got all OCD tonight and ordered something that's missing from the car.
More when it comes in. It's not that exciting, really.

I had the car warmed up yesterday evening so decided to give it a bit of a tune up.
I'd already set the points (made an improvement), solved a vacuum leak on the vacuum advance module so I tweaked the timing by ear to best suit the way it ran. I then tweaked the idle jets so it would sit in gear happily at low idle.
I'll put the strobe light on it after work and see where it's set to now. It might get a slight tweak again tonight because the adjuster is quite coarse.

Yeah, timing had slipped. Idle advance was sitting at about 35° BTDC, no wonder it had gotten a bit lumpy. Set it to factory 10 degrees and we'll go back to that one I've driven it a bit. Took the dog for a ride. That went down well. Phil
