The car had been stuttering and running rich periodically during driving, and was slow to pick up revs. Pulled the needle mechanism lid off.. sure enough, the needle plunger was sticking. Oiled that up and reassembled after oiling everything else up, went to try start the car and flattened the battery on the third attempt to start it. I think that battery has just about had it, coupled with the alternator not charging well. Battery is on charge, managed to get it running and the smoke blown out of it. Battery One thing my dad always told me, like a dog that killed chickens, never got a second chance. Yeeeeaaaahhhhhhhhh, this one's running on a second chance already- it was pretty unhappy when I got it, took a charge but the capacity has always been mediocre. I know it needs to go.

Put my new lights up today, added 2 new circuits on switches; now outside is on one, inside on another and the ceiling fan on the third. Cleaned the last of the hurricane curse word out of the corners, tidied up, found the damn Romex I was looking for, too. Phil

Romex make that solid core wire your house is hardwired with between the sockets and lights etc. "Twin & earth". I still need to get some more ply to put up on the ceiling, and stuff some insulation up there. It's starting to become a nice place to work again. Phil

Pretty sunset tonight. Went out with my film camera and finished off the roll. Hopefully some of the photos come out. Radiator is leaking pretty badly from the back now, so that needs to come out and be repaired. Phil

Led indicator bulbs arrived this morning. Satisfactory. Now I need a flasher relay that works with all LED bulbs. Phil

More bulbs arrived. The white ones are too wide, and the other ones were stamped 120v. Awesome

Sawed the white ones down to size, those now work. Fitted the spares to the Renault.
120V ones fit the sewing machine so that's good.
Ordered the 12v version of those, should be in Thursday.

Hello Phil, from not only another 51 Chieftain Sedan Straight 8 owner but also another Phil. found your thread this weekend and spent several rainy hours reading thru it. I’ve learned a good bit so far and look forward to continuing to do so. Here is mine when I brought it home and when I took the kids for their first ride around the block. I had to replace the brake system, everything but drums a little sanding of the points and a new 6v battery and it runs up and down the road well enough to enjoy while piddling about with projects. ![](https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pckelly44/8551a874f61b.jpg) ![](https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pckelly44/a642250b8521.jpg)

Very nice. Looks like a Canadian model? Not that I’m aware of. It is the base model so not all the dress up pieces like rock guards and other trim. The history I know of is purchased in NY and that gentleman owned it until he passed out on Long Island. Then brought down to NC by the gentleman I purchased it from father. When he passed the son was left a 65 vette in good running order and the Chieftain which hadn’t been driven in a few years and the 26 year old decided he wanted the Vette. I’m really surprised the condition it is in if it really was driven on Long Island as long as it was, it has remarkably little rust.

If not heated, certainly indoors because the sun fades that green paint to a bluish tint over time but yours in great condition. Mine has gone on all the usual places- door bottoms, rockers and the front edge of the rear wheel openings. Yours is Hydramatic?

Nope it’s a 3 on the tree. I think the car has been painted in its past life. Sure looks like it around some body seams to me.
Anyway great thread with lots of great info I will use on this car hopefully!

Anyway great thread with lots of great info I will use on this car hopefully! That's a strange combination, an 8 with deluxe bumpers and sun visor but base everything else! You do have the rock guards on the back doors, albeit black. Certainly, I can try help if you have any questions. Looks like you should just be able to get out there and enjoy it.

Hour in the garage tonight. Something missing. This heavy, choice set of expletives was wrestled out past the fan and dumped on the bench because it's been leaking. It was met with fire and gentle wrath. I need a better brush. There's a few joints where it's cracked the old solder. Cleaned up where the paint was coming off. I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with work hardened crack. I'll clean that up better when I don't have to be up at 2am for work. Hopefully it'll become watertight again. Phil
