I havent registered with this forum before. Found your build thread via a POP search and saw it was worth a read. Some really great information and build solutions . Love the feel of the car . I planted one of those OHC engines in a Classic Capri a few years ago and it ran like top .I don't remember having a lot of issues with the engine /ecu wiring, but despite your reservations You definitely owned it in the end If the IVA man questions the neatness of your wiring, direct him to any modern car .. they are not as welllaid out as you have achieved there . Great build thread , great build . Looking forward to the next instalment and eager to see how things go with the IVA test. If there are any issues its unlikely to be anything related to the build quality, it will be some thing daft ,if indeed anything at all . As you say at the start, approaching the build from the IVA angle at the outset will pay you dividends in the long term.. looking forward to you next instalment .Best thing Ive read for ages .

In my experience the IVA examiners don't seem too fussed about the quality of work at all, basically if it meets the requirement it's OK, for wiring it's basicaly the same as an MOT, as long as it's not flapping around or liable to get caught in any moving parts it's OK.

oldford31 thank you for your kind words. I don't deserve such praise, I'm just an old bodger in a shed. For top quality have a look at Mark's (Blackpop) thread, his OCD fuelled perfectionism will really show how it can be done.

Relax Paul, they will be very happy with what they see. The test is really not as bad as you think, it's just an in depth MOT.

I've been off on other jobs, mainly garden stuff (new paths) so car work has taken a back seat. However I have done a bit when time allowed. I have started to make up a bulkhead connector for the heater hoses. I know you can buy them but I will be going through a sloping part of the bulkhead and wanted to have horizontal hose connections. I need a tapered fitting to accommodate this so as I have lumps of aluminium and a milling machine it seemed rude not to. I'll put a piccy here when it's done. I've also made an idle air connection tube to connect the IAV to the manifold. This fits here with suitable sections of hose.

Just a little follow on. As i mentioned I have made a bulkhead fitting for the heater hoses. As the bulkhead is not vertical I have made a tapered block with ports that are threaded to take hose connectors. On the back I have milled it to have two spigots concentric with the ports. These locate it in position and M4 screws hold it in place. I'm not showing the spigots as I had to freehand mill them so they are not as pretty as I would like. Anyway...

The last of the NPT plugs and fittings turned up this morning so they were fitted. That's all the spare holes in the inlet manifold filled in now, also the correct fittings in the waterpump. Mark (Blackpop) had supplied me with a piece of the faced 10mm ply for the rear bulkhead so I made a template out of cardboard to check fit and then cut it out. This was pilot drilled and then spotted through onto the frame that sits behind it. These holes were then fitted with 6mm rivnuts and then the bulkhead was fitted with 6mm countersunk stainless screws. Next job was to fit the fog and reverse lights. I had a nice slim unit from CBS that combined these in one lamp which is E9 and F marked as required. I tucked this under the back valence where it is almost un-noticeable but complies with BIVA requirements. The rear panel clearly needs more polishing! Didn't realise it was like that until I saw the photo.

Still plodding on. I finally got the drivers seat mounting frame painted and fitted the seat then temporarily bolted in place. Next job was to bolt Wifey in the seat to make sure everything was suited to her. Just as well I did as the seat reclined too much for her (the seats are fixed buckets). A quick packer under the rear of the seat sorted that out, otherwise all was good. I needed a gear lever so a quick rummage saw a piece of stainless in the chuck and machined up. I don't have a taper turning attachment so the taper was done with the compound slide offset to 0.6 degrees. Needless to say this was a long job. The bottom is drilled to suit the stub on my home-made shift mechanism. It all works very nicely, just need a knob (fnar-fnar) for it now.

Nothing much has happened here. We went to Newcastle for a week and then both caught the cold from hell (covid tests were negative) which left both of us with hacking debilitating coughs. This somewhat curtailed any enthusiasm for working.
I have however been busy over the last week testing what electrics I can on the Pop. There was a couple of issues. Firstly the headlights would not dip. I knew that the relay switched ok but for some reason when the dash was all plugged in it went pear shaped. This was traced to me using just one of the dip/main leads from the column switch to switch the relay (the dip feed). The switch had a permanent 12v feed for the headlight flash and this connected to the main beam feed when operated. This also meant that when it was dipped the main feed was connected to the headlight feed (not the permanent feed) which back fed the relay. The solution was to cut a track on the switch. All good.
The other issue was the flasher/hazards. I'm not going to go into detail as it's even more confusing than the headlight story! Suffice it to say they now work but the flasher unit is not right for my setup, the warning light glows at a low level due to current leakage through the electronic flasher unit. A different type will solve the issue.
No photos of any of this somewhat mundane update, it would only be me poking about with a meter. All testing was done with a 3A battery charger and a current limiting resister to be safe.

Well! It's been a while! After the cold from hell I decided to totally redo the loft insulation and sort out a proper storage area. This was followed by mojo failure. But about six weeks ago I kicked myself up the derriere and got back into it. Some of the time has been on my Humber sorting out the fuel system (can't expect 5.2 litres to sip through a 3/16" bore fuel outlet!) but also digging back into Wifey's pop. I have finished off the wiring all bar the lights on the wings as they are absent at the moment. I have also prepped and painted the dash, screen surround and steering column top clamp. The screen is fitted after a fight with the new screen rubber which made the screen+rubber too tight to fit. Using the old rubber (which actually cleaned up just fine) allowed it to fit. The sealing is still to do. Today I have assembled the dash ready to fit. It's the only photo I took, everything else is a bit obvious (I think). If the knobs look a bit out of level they are not fixed in place yet.

I'm sure all of us who have ever undertaken a major project go through low periods where everything is an effort and enthusiasm for it is at an all time low. I certainly have and it's at times like these that encouragement from forum members makes such a huge difference and a great help in getting back on track.
This is a fantastic thread and I for one am in awe of the standard of your workmanship and the thought that you have and are putting in to make this such an incredible motor car. I very enjoyable read. Thank you and kind regards John

Sometimes you just have to walk away The dashboard has been in and out of the car many times for a variety of reasons. Today I was going to fit it in semi-permanently (it will have to come out for door fitting) but can I get it in? Can I hell as like . The top bolts will not come close to going in the holes for "reasons", none of which I can see. The only thing I have done is fit the screen but it is using the same rubber it came with and the dash was fitted before then. So I'm sitting with a mug of tea and digestive dunkies ignoring the bloody thing.
