W201 cosworths are very cool, wish I had bought one a couple of years ago! I have some new genuine 201 pedal rubbers around if you want one, I think i've only brake pedals left but can check! Yes please! I'm after alot of the wearing parts of this. The car has done 150k, so (as you can imagine) theres alot more broken/rotten then you'd want.

As you can see above the new boot corners are much improved. The boot lid has been test fitted and everything lines up as it should. The offside had a weird metal bodycoloured plug installed. Various people told me that it was due to an old carphone being installed. I have no use for a dodgy corded car phone, so Mark plugged it up and skimmed to finish. Next was stripping the bonnet. For those of you in the know, I was able to obtain an otherwise illigal stripper that does the job. Current Nitromorse is rubbish by comparrison. Aa brief read about and you'll find out about the essential ingrediant that provides the "guts" needed to get old paint off. Finally it's ready for the paint shop!

If you're not aware, the one panel that's unique to the 16V is the bonnet.
Great work, keep it coming.

If you're not aware, the one panel that's unique to the 16V is the bonnet. Great work, keep it coming. I wasn't! Is it the additional strengthener pieces fitted on the underside? As the panel fit of the one I bought is spot on. On my old bonnet, the strengthener pieces had rotted away and either end and are flapping about. I still have the original bonnet, but it's in a sorry state!

Yeah, it's the extra strengtheners. Without those the bonnet will try to lift and bulge at something like 130mph+. As you'll be sticking to seventy, no worries. I would advise when possible to try a locate a genuine 16V bonnet. If it ever came to sell time it's one of the first panels that those in the know would check. As it may indicate front end accident, obviously not in your case but I'm sure you get my drift. Any way keep on rocking!

I may be able to clean them up and reuse them on the fitted bonnet. Before the engine rebuild the car didn't want to do more then 125, but that was mostly due to an overly stretched chain, etc. Aas you say, it'd be a good idea to source the right bonnet! Thanks again!

I have the car back from the bodyshop and it's back in the garage, where it belongs. I've been to the local stealership as I need a few sundry items to finish the boot (which is my primary focus for the moment and work forward. I still need to rebuild the rear suspension, brakes and replace the subframe bushes too (i've already got all the bits) The eagle eyed amoung you will have noticed that the back end is riding way too high. That'd be because it is. Reason being that I haven't rebuilt all the drivers side footwell from the welding and the brake light switch is disconnected. When that's not connected the suspension goes to it's highest setting and won't self level as it should. On the plus side, at least it proves that the rear end set up is working! Also, all the bodykit has been repainted (it's wrapped up in the boot currently). I've had it all repainted in the correct matt lacquer finish (as it would have been from the factory). More to follow soon as i've been buying lots of bits to get it all back together.

Oh and a massive shout out to Ben of Premier Spray Finishes in Wimborne. Ben is a straight up guy that has one quality level. Over 100 hours from him and his team have gone into this. Please bear in mind that I delivered him a stripped, filled, welded car!
You can see the level of quality in real life. Sadly the photos don't do the car justice.

It was never the want to go this far, but i'm pleased that I have as i've uncovered alot of bodges in the process. hopefully I might make it to Retro cars with a mate (he's got a couple of Novas). Parts are becoming scarce now and people are starting to take the mick with some bits. But put in the time and you'll always find what you need. I noticed that you're into your Astras. I've got alot of fond memories of my old silver/gold GTE 8v (and the foolishness that follows a 19yr old and a GTE....). Aa mate owned a Vauxhall breakers near Bournemouth and I always had something Vauxhall on the go (Nova 2 litre, Astra V6, etc). The favourites where always the mk3 2 door and the mk2 GTE. Around the same time I moved over to a mk3 1400 and proceeded to carry out a 2 litre swap, earlier wiring loom, lowered it too much, big exhaust, etc. One day i'll do it all again. You might get older, but the dreams are always the same

You might get older, but the dreams are always the same silver/gold sounds like the mystical "rembrandt silver", quite rare, as are mk2 astras now, and people that care about them lol. 16v has allot in common with your 190E of course, the head being one of the few non-ford pet projects of cosworth

Darrenh, i've just looked up rembrandt silver.... That was the colour of mine. It had manual windows and no fog lights too. But was a 2 litre 8 valve (E Reg from Memory). Sadly somebody stole it from the NCP in Bournemouth and it was burnt to the ground. I paid next to nothing for it but loved every minute of ownership.
Crumbs that brings back memories! Maybe one day i'll find another in that colour!

Another weekend and a little more got done. Due to the time and effort involved in this car, I fully intend to use it and as such am going the extra mile. So no "throwing it together" here! The rear light rubber seals where in tact, but covered in lacquer, moss and dirt. They got removed, cleaned and refitted. Same treatment for the front lights. The car has previously had a repaint job and I can only guess that it was put back together prior to being dry. It took alot of time to get right. With the rebuilt lights (including various bulbs changed) installed, I moved onto the rear bumper. The back bumper on these is such that if you don't consider all fixings, you won't get all fixings in place (sounds like some sort of a Chinese proverb). It was loosly fitted back on at the bodyshop for transporting. So it was removed, refitted and adjusted accordingly. Theres a total of 4 nuts, 4 bolts and 6 screws holding all of this in place.... Whilst sipping on my liquid lunch I pondered for a moment about post and any impending Mercedes parts that are due. After a brief dash to the door I found my rubber aeriel grommet. Sad, but required! This car (for some unknown reason) has an earlier form of grommet that utilises a 22mm round hole in the back wing. Most later cars have an oval 32 x 22 hole. It took all of 20 mins to install the replacement aeriel. I specifically bought the period correct (although updated) Hirshmann 2050 model. You'll notice that when closed it forms a seal against water coming in and doesn't make a hideous noise going up or down. All very fitting to the car. Although you can buy a lesser aeriel for £30 or less from Halfrauds, it won't have these nice features and won't last any period of time. My car had one of those monstrosities fitted, with added Spanish-like "i'll work when I want". It didn't get a graceful buriel.

Yet another small win to me. SHMBO was still out and so I moved onto the front to have a quick look. The bonnet is fitted loosly using the wrong fixings. I have the right ones, but it's a 2 man job to remove and refix. Aa quick call to Mark and he's coming over on Saturday to finalise the bonnet, bootlid, wing panel gaps. It won't take him anywhere near as long as it would me, so best pay an expert. The front lights, indicators, etc where in a similar state to the rear lights. Full of moss and looking disgusting. The seals, although in good order, had been pushed from there locations by moss. I just had enough time to steal the kitchen sink and thoroughly clean one corner prior to fitting. Although only loosly fitted, the results speak for themselves. The fuel cap was refitted, but nothing exciting to report aside from rebending the rubber stop to make the car line up with the bodywork. I'm hoping to sort panel gaps (with Mark) and wax oil everything this coming weekend. Maybe sort some more of the boot fittings too. I've ordered alot of sundry items from the stealership and should have them in and hopefully do a few more bits. Still need to rebuild the rear brakes, replace arms, subframe bushes and figure out why the SLS isn't settling to where it should be. Finally, does anybody know anywhere that refurbishes alloy wheels for sensible money? The tyres are destined for the bin as I have a new set of Toyos waiting. They're 500 SL, 16 inch wheels and i'm based in the Bournemouth area. I'm happy to travel around a bit! Thanks in advance
