This brings back a memory I had forgotten. Back in the late 70's and early 80's we used to visit my Gran by train which meant getting on at Glasgow central and getting of at Johnstone. This route took us past the Routes factory in Linwood and I remember seeing waggons full of cars go past our train window. I think that technically by then it was a Talbot factory making Sunbeams but with the double deck car transporters the cars passed the window like a multi coloured zig zag. Anyway, here are a couple more pics. My Gran and Grandad in Johnstone ran an ice cream factory and had a fleet of vans. These are the early LD's; Later on they converted Mk2 Transits. Dave. P.S. I will be back later with more period pictures once I find them on the hard drive.

When you look at the then and now on some of those pics it becomes more obvious that signage, bollards and road narrowing, let alone the complete removal of roads to pedestrianise whole streets has not really made things look alot better than they were. Moreover, the push to pedestrianise our High streets has had a detrimental effect on all the other routes, they removed whole roads and did not replace them with alternatives. Ok, traffic has increased umpteenfold over the decades but, I bet you, much of the congestion we have in our towns and cities have been exacerbated by planners that were hell bent on offering the ultimate shopping experience but killing the car off in doing so. That Bullring picture speaks volumes, the ability to park and pop into a shop now long gone and, in many places, people cannot be a**ed to go into town and pay through the nose for parking, they end up on retail parks, free parking and car friendly, to a point. We have created uglier places to be, bland cars to go there in and regulation to, seemingly, create a Utopian society that millions of us would rather not have if we keep having to sacrifice so much. I get the pollution thing but nobody has come up with anything sensible other than 'BAN' 'CONGESTION CHARGE' 'SCRAPPAGE' etc. I'm sure where I live is no different to where you live, I have a Hospital, a College and three large Secondary schools and umpteen primary ones. Most people get to these places by car, many travelling no more than a couple of miles to get there, a distance I could p*ss as a child, in all weathers! You park and ride the Hospital and College, you School bus the kids that need it and make the others walk, you cut pollution in half and traffic too. I know this to be true, when the kids are off there is no traffic queues.............. Nobody has even tried it to any degree, have they. ![:|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/plain.png) Anyway, have a look at EM Wrights (Scunthorpe) used cars for sale, absolute bargains and not a newspaper and chicken wire sill between the lot of em! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Here are a couple more from my archives. This was a bad day for Mr. McLeavey; This is my Mum in her Dads big Jag; This is Waterloo street in Glasgow. The bus garage has gone and most buildings have been replaced; And this is my Mums aunty Rosie. She needed wooden blocks to prop the drivers seat forward so she could reach the pedals. Dave

Was going to ask a similar thing, can pretty much guarantee my father in-law would have been there if it was car related. They are only just up the road.
