Little update again, been though about 5 sample colours and I think I've given up on the greens, just can't get one right. Picked up this blue today and I like it, not sure how it will show, but definately a hint of grey in it, originally a 60's 912 colour. Meanwhile work has been progressing in the engine bay, the repairs are finished so I just shot a couple of coats of epoxy primer in there, I know there are some imperfections to remedy, but some dolphin glaze and filler primer should sort these. Feel I'm making progress now, can't wait to get the body finished and get rid of the dust out of the garage.

Nice car Brian. Got some paint on the engine bay, looks dark as it's in the garage, body is prepped for the final coat of filler primer Couldn't resist having a look at the engine, so head removed, needs a skim, found it has +40 pistons but the bores measure spot on, so a light hone and new rings should see them well, cams measured as standard Se spec which matches the car, so I'll get them reground which should see another 15bph.

I take it you will be having the valve seats changed for unleaded fuel when you get the engine parts sorted?

Seldom required on anything old with an aluminium head as they have decent inserts to start with.

Yep, not planning on seats unless mine are knackered, not taken the valves out yet though. Don't need a daily driver, I only do about 5k miles a year in my 'modern' car. I don't think it's worth the expense at the moment, there is plenty more to spend on.

alloy heads have hardened valve seats as standard.

Yes and they can also suffer from valve seat regression and porosity.
The reason I asked about getting the changes is that the old original valve seats don't work well with the Ethanol content in the modern fuels and don't last in a regularly used performance engine.

Today didn't quite go to plan, was going to get the next coat of primer on the body, but due to rain all day and the wind blowing towards the houses I decided to get on with other things. Had a few brackets to blast and paint and thought I'd add the gearbox crossmember to the batch. Got the propshaft and gearbox removed. Saw a crack when I degreased it, so popped it into the blasting cabinet which revealed some previous repairs which have failed again. Just checked and these are only available as upgraded race items so I might try repairing and strengthening this one

Thought I'd add the pedal box to the paint batch instead, so started stripping it down. Got the master cylinders out with a bit of fiddling but struggled with the pedals. Basically, the spindle which they rotate around is seized to the clutch pedal. Looks like the clutch slave has leaked and caused the corrosion. Add to this the mounting holes for the spindle in the pedal box itself have gone oval, and the throttle pedal has about 20mm of side to side play due to wear I realised this wasn't going to be a quick fix, so gave up for the day.

Got the rest of the valves out. All looks kind of ok, one valve seems a bit loose in the guide. One spring seat was installed on an angle so has split and one inner spring has broken. Quite a bit of rubbing between the inner and outer springs, so I'll replace the set. Evidence of rubbing on the valve shafts, still need to clean and properly inspect everything. All of the inlet seats look fine, maybe a little pitting on the exhausts. I'll take it to the machine shop in a week or two when it's cleaned up and have it skimmed plus any rectification work.

As you can see I found it, the area I cleaned up had what looked like a small crack but it seems to have rubbed out so I think it was only a scratch. If its any use to you pm me your address and I will send it, you can put something in the next RNLI box you see to cover postage.
