A friend of mine who also happens to be into this hobby and was toying with setting up his own classic restoration business, simply had some business cards made up by vistaprint (there are many other similar services) and then went into store and asked...

I got mine years ago from the Vauxhall owners club (after trying/failing to blag one from the store), but they shut that loop hole a while back.
It seems to depend a bit on what the local manager is like! In theory, proof of working in any physical trade seems to qualify you (plumber, joiner, etc, not just motoring...)

The few times I needed stuff from Halfords I'd always ask how much it was with the trade card. When asked if I had one, the answer was never 'no', it was always 'not on me, no', and the discount was usually applied.  |

Hi, there was a similar thread last year but I can't find it.
I'm trade (not motor trade) and got told to take a payslip, bank statement, or business card when I went to collect my card at the local branch - but they gave me the card without checking the documents.

I did an automotive engineering course in college - we got them when the lecturer brought them in - good for Halfrauds as we spend money there. Got a fine rollcab toolbox for £82 trade on top of the half price sale.
Get business card, and go in there greasy in work clothes. If they think you're going to spend money they'll give you one

My Son went and said "I've been told by my employer that I can get a Trade card", this was true as it heppens.
They said, "which employer "?.
He answered and they just gave him a card, no proof of anything asked for.

They're on a hard drive for new customers. They came into work and handed the cards out to students like sweets. Even in the non-mechanics sections.

If they're handing them out like sweets is there now a Halfords Platinum Trade card which has the real discounts while the handout cards have 3% discounts and are for the wannabees?  Not that it'll help but having tried to blag a card for years, I asked for one on the back of a particularly large order and person at the counter said, 'you're always in here, just a sec' and the magical card appeared. I think the fact that I looked like a greasy tramp & the stuff I was buying was proper mechanic stuff, not air fresheners and a tent helped. I was actually on a high for about 3 days after getting my card. |
