I actually prefer the zip zip blipping as it returns to get back on the drive rather than the full bore drive by but yes lovely sounding all round. I'm not a million miles away from Darkspeed ... Watching with interest.

Power for show, torque for go ?
I was led to understand in really basic terms power= top speed, torque = Acceleration
So over twice the power but also over twice the torque 37 - 100 bhp 49 - 115 ftlbs
And a flat 6 so winning at life !

Undeniably cool, but can't help thinking its a lot of effort for 100bhp and expensive engine spares. Still, as I say, undeniably cool which is the main thing 😎 Yeah I'm really not doing it for the power. I could get just as much power from my Datsun engine (but it would be peaky and lumpy) Main reason I'm silly enough to take this on is because of the interest/challenge for me in doing so and the sound its gonna make when finished! I love the sound of flat sixes. Oh also- what it does lack in bhp it makes up for in torque - 115 lbft is pretty meaty in an Imp and it will hopefully be smooth but punchy, so making the car feel faster than it is. Probably better for real world driving then having to ring its tits off all the time. Plus a better spread of gears too. The imps gearbox with its 4000 rpm at 100kph gets boring quite quickly. I completely agree. It's a great idea and I'd do it myself, even if it may be an odd choice on paper.

Yeah cracking idea, even if it's not the most obvious method I'm thinking there's probably room for improvement on the goldwing motors as well. Not that there's likely to be much aftermarket, but they seem pretty unstressed for their capacity so wringing a little more out with good old fashioned tuning should be doable

No need to tune the engine they are turbine smooth and the torque starts good and early, they also don't break as they very under stressed and do massive mileages. As a Boxster owner I salute your decision to go flat 6 .

Only one relevent equasion here...angle of depressed throttle will proportionately increase upturn of corners of mouth....(and possibly tightening of sphincter too!)

Heard this on a documentary about drag racing in the US years ago from a tuner I cannot remember the name of..... "Horse power gives bragging rights, torque gives acceleration"

This sounds like an awesome adventure Alex! I’m looking forward to seeing it unfold Its a shame you don’t get to keep the nice sequential bike gearbox, but the reasons sound sensible.

I was led to understand in really basic terms power= top speed, torque = Acceleration No, power = torque x rpm For the way most people normally drive there is a pretty good correlation between torque and perceived acceleration and power and top speed, the reality though is if you are preparred to always keep the engine around the max power rpm this is where you will get the fastest acceleration and top speed. Can't wait to see this built.

That's a lot of motor for a tiny car! I like it! This imp keeps getting better How heavy is the old motor in comparison though? The current Datsun engine is around 87kg, plus crossmember and exhaust etc. I think a standard Imp engine is around 70kg? I am hoping to get the goldwing down to around 80kg. I'll be posting about that next.

I do love that one. All those extra touches. I cant tell if it has completely open exhausts or if they are really thin walled straight through silencers?

I cant find any aftermarket cams so the originals would have to be re-ground. I'm not sure how far the stock hydraulic lash adjusters can be shimmed out to suit? The inlet ports are tiny!!!! about 25mm. Its all tuned for torque and inlet airspeed at low revs to keep it smooth. I think the stock rev limit is 6000 and I bet most never see that. I have found a couple that have been supercharged! I'll be totally happy if it just all works as stock and my box choice doesnt grenade itself being run backwards. 6000 rpm will sound nice enough :-) If it all works out well then I could always buy some spare heads and play around with them. You'll see way more detail soon as I load up more pics. Its a nicely built engine that's for sure!

If your box does grenade itself then you might be able to use a Subaru gearbox. I know there's a kit you can buy from the states with reverse-cut CROWNwheels and pinions so VW beetles can run EJs sticking out of the back. Haven't worked through in my head whether that would get everything pointing in the right direction but might be an option
