I'm going to introduce myself with my past and present cars before I get onto the Porsche. I've been a bit of a lurker on here for a good few years now, I think I had a thread for the polo but never posted a lot, then I mainly lurked checking a certain 912 & 911 thread of Bruce's I started off years back with minis, Mayfair which never got on the road, then a Clubman which went in the same direction. Whilst I had both, I bought a 1993 Polo as a 'daily runaround' but as you probably all know, rarely does a car stay as just that. This was how it was at 2013 RRG I had this for 7 years, during this time I also had a 1991 Breadvan and a 1987 saloon. Breadvan was a daily for a year, saloon suffered the same fate as the minis. Then 3 years ago, Id had enough of the Polo and wanted something a little warmer. Enter my current 'daily' It's a 2001 PH1 172, which I'm gonna say is almost retro.. haha Unfortunately I missed the 1st RRG since 2012? last year, but I think I had fair reasoning. Was kinda here doing this whilst you guys were all at Shelsley Walsh Anyway, I plan on keeping the Clio for a while yet but I was eager to have something I can get properly stuck into. I've been toying with the 924/944 idea or years, always backing out because its not a 'real Porsche' but the realisation has finally set in that It's going to be a long time before I've got the cash for one with the engine in the correct place and not a drop of coolant to be seen. Enter, the new project It's a 1987 944 LUX 2.5 Been sat for 4 years, needs sills and plenty of other little issues sorting out, but for £900... How could I say no? Runs and drives, has some nice little extras (turbo front bumper, seats) but has had paint in the past. For some reason, the passenger side is pretty good but the drivers side is a state. Which would be the case... Passenger sill panel from Porsche - £160, Drivers - £380 My plans for this are pretty wild, especially in the engine department. I think I'll make the purists cry if I actually manage to pull it off. For now, I'll be keeping this a secret but I think the ladies and gents of RR will think it's a great idea, maybe. Engine aside, it'll be a road legal track car, fiberglass panels, perspex windows, full cage, buckets etc etc I may get it on the road for a year before I start going mad, just depends on what's required for MOT. And really, I could do with actually getting it from Oxford to me, in Wolverhampton before I get carried away with plans I'll try to keep this as up to date as possible, but If you're at all interested my Instagram will probably flooded with it: bshaw557 *shameless plug*

Nice. I reckon one of these would go really well with a 5 cylinder audi turbo engine

Have you started doing anything with this yet? apart from the sills looks a good base, any interior pictures? I'm at the engine choice stage with mine when its delivered. Ok, so to begin with I REALLY wanted to try bang a BMW straight 6 in there. I love those engines, and on throttle bodies, my GOD they sound sexual. Guy Higgs E30 at RR Gathering a couple of years back had me wanting one ever since. BUT.... without a massive amount of work, none will fit. Torque tube being the limiting factor as you cant drop the engine down enough. without converting it all to a prop setup, which has massive implications to the rear suspension setup. I then almost went 1.8t, I was very close to buying a crash damaged Audi TT 225. Too many people have done this though, its cheap and light and aftermarket parts are readily available. I think I'm decided now though, I've not seen it done and they sound great with a turbo bolted on... VR6 Little bit heavier than the 2.5 i believe, but they sound great, and with a turbo are good for high power. I'd love a 3.2 from a Cayenne but because Porsche they're mega money. 2.8 from a golf v motion will probably be the way. Far cheaper and easier to find. I did have other thoughts though. Saab turbo 4 pot VW V5 Volvo 5 pot Audi 5 pot Have you managed to make a decision yet?

Yes I bought a conversion kit and I'm going 2.5 audi 5 pot. I have a engine to convert from N/A to turbo power till I uprate it to a proper turbo lump. Just about to send the money now for the front facing inlet manifold so thats another step closer. I've still not picked my car up yet. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I saw your seats for sale but it was the wrong time otherwise I'd have been interested but think I'm going aftermarket tbh something a bit different. Saab 4 pot would be very good but I think they are a little high so probably a bit of work. Vw V5 I'm yet to see but engine should be cheap and sound good Volvo v5 I've included a picture below Audi v8 has been fitted to one Another very good option would be zetec 2litre turbo, cheap and gives good power easily plus big fan base on passionford etc. Be like a modern cossie/rs turbo lump in terms of sound and popping flames etc. Nissan 2litre 4 pot would also be good all rounder v8's from america fit easily and conversion parts are easy to source v6 s4 twin turbo - not seen someone fit one yet but don't think it would be impossible

plenty of rust to get stuck into, but it’ll be worth it when done!
Those big bolster tombstones look amazing! Are those bigger bolsters than usual due to it being a lux model?
Are you any closer to deciding on an engine?
The vr6 sounds great with a turbo, and has bucket loads of torque! And like you say, are good for good figures. With a decomp plate you’d sensibly see 450bhp, more if you wanted, but they recommend rod bolts above 450, the only downside is the 12v engine is starting to become expensive to buy, especially with the value of original vr6 cars going up, less people seem to be breaking them! Which then makes sense with going for the 24v like you mentioned from the mk4. I believe they turbo just as well? But I’m not as clued up on them being completely honest
I look forward to seeing more updates, hopefully you get unit space shortly

Been a while since I updated... A month ago we got they keys to a unit, spent lots of evenings and weekends cleaning, painting, wiring, demolishing, fitting a s ink n curse word. And of course, moving the car to said unit Started the strip down Was hoping to get the engine out this weekend but been let down on the engine crane. Next weekend maybe? Still will be carrying on stripping bits all this weekend hopefully. The plan is to get it fully stripped, rotisserie built and car mounted before the new year. Aswell as a few more jobs at the unit (window bars, 2x work bench, other security bits) 99% certain this will be going VR6T now, still unsure which yet though. Cannot make my mind up weather to go widebody or not on it, I'm all for less is more but at the same time I wanna build something really shouty. Cant find anything I'm 100% happy with though, I want fiberglass panels, I want to keep OE lines but be wider, with a few special bits. Nothing out there for the rear arches though. Too many round arch extensions which IMO look bloody awful with the boxy arches.

Take a look at FC rx7 wide arches, Mazda "took inspiration" from the 944 xD there's a fair amount of arches for them out there that widen the standard body lines Also ford galaxy/sharans came with a vr in certain models, could be a cheap way of getting hold of an engine?

Had a busy few days on this Engines now out As is the front cross-member And the rear torsion beam Gearbox and torque tube for good measure Attempted to be sensible and crack the big 32mm hub nuts off before I removed it, didn't go to plan #1 #2 #3 #4 No pic, bent a knackered torque wrench #5 1" to 1/2" adaptor Impact gun with it off the car is now my only hope Going to invest in one of those beasty milwaukee fuel ones, 1895nm nut busting torque, if that fails, take it to a commercial garage I guess for the guns they use on trucks. More to come this weekend. If anyone wants the engine, drop me a PM.. it's on ebay (cheapest, most complete and was running 2 weeks ago) yet I've had no interest.

Yes yes! Signed up just to comment on this. Was a lurker years ago, now looking back through others' projects. Great to see you pushing on with this. I bought a Passat VR5 as a donor with the intention of turbo and 5 pot burble and VR noises, but i keep buying other cars, so sold it.
I've got a '86 944 Lux that was my daily about 5 years ago, but got taken off the road to sort a few things, then pushed to the back of the pile (taking up space in my Dad's unit haha).
You're really inspiring me to pull it out and do a swap. Originally looked at Volvo T5, but they're too long. the VR5 would have been a good one, also had a Passat 1.8T that was going to be a donor, but sold that as well haha. Once i've finished my drift car 325ti and my fast road / track / Nurburgring E90 330i, maybe i'll get round to buying the engine i want for my 944....
Keep it going, i might even have to go and have a look at mine this weekend.... Love 944s
Also, i had to use a tractor multiplier torque wrench to undo my rear hub nuts - they are insanely tight. i've got a collection of broken breaker bars, scaff poles with inch bars welded through etc haha

Bookmarked! How about a 3.2 out of an Audi A3? Same engine as the Golf R32 and multi-valve development of the VR minus the scene tax. Sensitive to cam-chains and their tensioners but maybe that was me buying a lemon! Lovely noise and smoooooooooth power.

Very cool project, I always really liked the 924/944. As an interesting retro RWD sport car chassis to swap a go-fast motor into they seem an appealing option, especially at that price. That's a fair bit of rust there though, hope you enjoy welding!

But putting a vr6 crank in a 3.2 is ideaal, lowers compression and way tougher crank.

It's looking pretty good! It's certainly a different twist on things. As for the nut, see if you can get a DeWalt DCP899P2 rattle gun. That should get it off .

Cheers for all the love guys Thought I best update seen as this thread somehow ended up in the email lol! Today I won something on eBay V6 from a Ford Galaxy which is exactly the same as the mk4 golf 4 motion VW 2.8 24v 201bhp VR6 Wasn't planning on buying the engine until the bodywork was sorted but this was too cheap and kinda local to refuse. Will be buying a Milwaukee Fuel 1/2" gun as soon as I can find the cash. Breakaway torque is like no other yet still cheaper than Snapon/Mac, still about £400 though. Stripped a bit more off the car, got no pics though. I'm now in the positive though, made more off parts I've sold than I paid for the car, So I got a free car at this stage. That wont last for long mind. Rotisserie next

If my Kielder is anything to go by, it won't touch the nut. The breakaway torque will be far higher than the rating of the tool; My Kielder is rated 450Nm. This is why I bought the DeWalt.
The Makita D1002z, the aforementioned DeWalt or the Milwaukee rated to 1500Nm will get it off however. Even with my massive rating, the retainer for the 2CV still took time to take off.
And yes, I did think twice and three times about buying it.
