Just my 2p. I was talking to the guy who looks after my W124 diesel about Merc V8s. He's into some sort of powerboating and has a V8 Chevy-powered boat. I'd made some comment about getting a big old V8 Merc for the running gear to put into something else and selling on the rest of the car to recover a lot of the cost. He reckoned that it's a lot cheaper to get an American V8 of given power than a Merc one and a lot cheaper and easier to up the power of a Chevy or Ford thereafter. I know that's hearsay but the guy's business is repairing Mercs so he knows the ins and outs and has access to Big Mercs yet chose the Chevy for simplicity and cost... Yeah, I see what you mean. There aren't many tuning parts out there for Merc V8's, apart from maybe a Schrick cam or something. But to be honest, 250 bhp out of the box will be plenty for me. I still have the turbo I was going to use on the original engine, and I have a half-built Megasquirt ECU rattling round in a box. Even if I get 300 out of it after those mods I'd be happy! As much as I'd like a 500 bhp tarmac-shredder, I have to be able to use the car every day! ;D Plus, I like the idea of doing something slightly different. Yank V8's and Rover V8's are popular for a reason, I understand that, but I'd sacrifice a little tuneablility for a bit of something different I think.

Must admit, big Mercs as a source of drivetrain appeals to me too. While they would be expensive to fix, they probably wouldn't break in the first place. I suspect something high-end would almost pay for itself once the tat you didn't need was sold off on Ebay. Those little merc bits, seats, dashes, lights etc usually make good money.
In terms of power and economy, if you can live without the Merc comfort, which as a daily driver might not be viable, I bet there's an awful lot of weight that can be ditched

I'm fancying another one.

Hollywood has a spare Piazza Turbo engine and box with everything needed to run it which is available..... Bit out of left field I know but they are 170hp as standard, easy 200 with some more boost, 2.0L 8v and loads of torque...... its only done 62000 I think so plenty of life left in it yet Got wiring loom ecus, engine mounts, down pipe, even a front section of Prop ;D

the only thing to consider is that....if you don't put a V8 in, are you, everytime you start it up, gonna say to yourself..."wish id put a V8 in it " if you do put a V8 in it everytime you go to fill it up you´re gonna say to yourself: wish i´d put the diesel in it!!! If your going to use it daily how about a 300D out of the W124..they are definately rare in a 114.
