Right, I have a bit of budget for a new engine for the Benz. But I have a bit of a dilemma...
My original plan was to shoehorn a Merc V8 in it. Loads of fun, loads of torque... awesome! But, this is my only car. I need it to travel to meetings, go to work and general daily duties, so I'm thinking that 12mpg might soon wear a little thin. So I started looking at Mercedes 4-pots. 2.0 C-Class engines, later W123 cross-flows, that kind of thing. Still plenty of power and torque, but maybe a little more practical?
So, to sum up: 4 or 8?! What would you do?

imho mate, you wont go far wrong putting a 2.2 out of a W124 in. 150 horse and capable of returning up to 40mpg.

imho mate, you wont go far wrong putting a 2.2 out of a W124 in. 150 horse and capable of returning up to 40mpg. That's what got me thinking - when I was in your motor I was impressed by the power. It'd be a more practical choice, but I still can't fully shake the big V8 idea out of my head! ;D Penski - a six would be relatively straight forward as the W114 came with the 280 six-banger. But... I dunno... maybe I'm a glutton for punishment! I'd like to fit something that isn't normally found in there.

drop a supercharger off a mk1 mr2 on a 4 pot - it has a magnetic clutch so you can turn it on when you want the power and leave it off when you want to do a run

none of the above. tick all the boxes by going for a volvo redblock lump with a 16v head and a turbo. big power and good economy on a run

I should know by now that I'd have my head filled with more options after posting something like this up on here! Thanks! ;D
I think a YB or a Sprinter lump would be out of the question as they're too expensive. Sprinter lumps seem to go for four figures on the bay, but they do have stacks of torque!
Weird you should mention Volvo, Dez. I've had an idea brewing about a Volvo engine for some time, but something inside me wants to keep it all Benz. If one came up for the right price though. If I was gonna do a V8, I'd use a Benz one. They're cheap and really powerful, although nowhere near a bolt in job! The engine bay in the 115 is really narrow for such a big car.
I think what I should do is see what turns up and let fate decide. I don't really mind running a V8 day-to-day, but I want to be able to use my Benz all the time as I just love it!

the only thing to consider is that....if you don't put a V8 in, are you, everytime you start it up, gonna say to yourself..."wish id put a V8 in it "

Well, at the moment the quet voice of reason has been drowned out by V8 noises... Like you say johnnysomersett, am I gonna forever wish I'd ust lobbed a V8 in there? Any swap I do is going to require loads of work, unless I put in a 2.8 but I don't wanna do that. The mistake I made last time was buying a V8 engine that needed a HG changing, then thinking "Oooh, I could turbocharge it" and then "Well, I might as well MegaSquirt it"... aand thus it never got finished. It was an old cast iron block anyway, so not ideal. It has left me with a stack of new V8 parts though... and a gearbox... so maybe I can justify it that way! Whichever engine I get, it's gonna go straight in. No d!cking about with turbos and Megasquirt (yet) otherwise nowt gets done. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for various engines on eBay and stick a few bids on likely looking suspects... ;D

Just my 2p. I was talking to the guy who looks after my W124 diesel about Merc V8s. He's into some sort of powerboating and has a V8 Chevy-powered boat. I'd made some comment about getting a big old V8 Merc for the running gear to put into something else and selling on the rest of the car to recover a lot of the cost. He reckoned that it's a lot cheaper to get an American V8 of given power than a Merc one and a lot cheaper and easier to up the power of a Chevy or Ford thereafter.
I know that's hearsay but the guy's business is repairing Mercs so he knows the ins and outs and has access to Big Mercs yet chose the Chevy for simplicity and cost...
