Can we back up a sec to why the base-clear system was not the first choice?
I myself have a belief that classics of this era don't look quite right in base clear because it looks "too good for the times" if that makes sense. Too shiny or crisp or something that I cant quite put my finger on.

Too shiny or crisp or something that I cant quite put my finger on. I know what you mean, but doesn't the second line of your post answer the first? The first and preferred approach lead to issues that mean the best way forward is to opt for the second approach of the base clear. That's my assumption anyway. Whatever the reason... Grumpy's not the sort to let it go out not looking at its best so I'm sure it will look boss once it emerges from the catacomb of care.

After all the hard work, care and attention to detail to get to that final stage you really did not deserve to have those issues. Looks fabulous in the base and looking forward to seeing the finished article.

So to answer the last few posts - I had planned from day one to do the car in a basecoat & clear paint system - The clients budget became constrained when so much additional work was found on the car in the form of repairing the large number of bodges undertaken by the previous restorers of the vehicle - in order to save some money I gave the option of repainting the car in a direct to gloss 2 pack paint system which in turn has completely backfired on me - has I can not attain the results with the direct to gloss system due to pigment separation - I have now had to go to a base & clear system - the word frustrating simply does not even touch the sides - the paint manufacture will not accept any liability - in all that's a lot of effort and expense wasted - categorically in the financial scale in excess of £2k - and then owners balk at the cost of having this type of work of done - makes me wonder some days and I consider myself a very patient being Any paint regardless of type can be finished to a set standard by the way that it is finished & polished - it can be patinaed to a flatter / duller finish - can made to present has a in use patina or can be polished the point that it looks completely artificial

I was just thinking how you’d definitely earned the right to the grumpy bit through this - then read your post .... I really feel for you. What a nightmare.

thought my mrs had a long labour at 24 hours.... this is killing me!!! thats a good one. Grumpy, you have the advantage in all this of years of perspective. it is what it is. (easy to say from here, but...) There is no other option, and no going back....Not sure if "being proud of you" is the right sentiment...but I think you know what i mean. in the end, you have arrived at a very very very nice result. We know for you, there is no other way. Kudos! JP

Followed this all the way through and a great journey- the techniques, particularly dealing with the paint are way beyond my understanding- thank you for taking us along GN and Pete. PS on a light note what does QC Sid make of the paint developments?

Instead of a period 'tiger in the tank' sticker for the back window, maybe a 'Super-visor Sid' sticker would be appropriate?

So very little progress I'm afraid and its not good news In the fact that SWMBO gifted me with the most horrendous bout of the lurge that I can ever recall having - hence I have been off my feet for several days - but slowly started to ease myself back into it - so onwards we go back into the workshop this morning
