So in the last year, me and Mrs Rich went on holiday to Ibiza again and in my typical fashion, wanted to hire something a bit junk. We previously hired a Mehari for a day and only broke down once, and really enjoyed it. This time we wanted to have no technical limitations on vehicle as there are some stunning locations to be visited by not-car, like beaches, the tallest mountain, ect, so we hired a battered black Wrangler TJ with the wrong size tyres, a Defender tube bumper and more stickers than I have socks. And proceeded to drive to the top of Sa Talaiassa, beaches you wouldn't know were there, ect. Mountain. You could see Eivissa and Saint Antoni at the same time more or less. Anyway. The point of that story? I fell in love with the character of 'modern' Jeep. Not the current stuff they churn out, and I am well accustomed to the war time stuff, which is great in its own way, but the late 80's, early nineties 'feel' of what it was. I had to have a slice of that 4 litre in my life. Sadly, Wranglers are out of my budget, and to be fair, are no more practical than the Landrover I decided it was going to have to replace. So I decided I wanted to find a decent 4 litre XJ. But it would have to be black, and it would have to be a pre-facelift. But I would bide my time til one was local as I was in no rush. Fast forward to mid August, and this was on my drive. It isn't black. It was however, 3 miles from me, and a grand less than I was expecting to pay. It is a 4 litre HO limited, with the SelecTrac transfer box, TracLoc axle, sentinal headlamps, 6 way electric seats, and so forth. The paintwork is tired, so it will in time get a repaint. In gloss back with gold detailing. Paintwork aside, it's really tidy. Barely sat-in looking drivers seat.. I've removed the rear sound bar as the speakers were.. err.. not. and the cloth was peeling off. few coats of grey paint New speakers. Settled for cheaper coaxials as the sound isn't going to be particularly great no matter what goes in it, it's a pod made from headlining, fixed with the interior light and side window trims. Which meant I needed to remove the old tape deck and fit my decent HU from the Landrover. I would love to keep it period but this is a great unit and it isn't too OTT and intrusive. But alas, someone had crimped the panasonic loom onto another radio loom which in turn was crimped onto the factory wiring. Bah. New ISO plugs fixed that. All done. I'll hopefully get some more photos tomorrow.

I also have a soft spot for this age Cherokee and it's big brother the Grand. They feel so American! My Uncle had a Grand Cherokee Orvis, for years and it was a great old boat.
My brother in law couldn't believe it when I said I'd have a diesel Grand Cherokee over a TD5 Disco.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Tom It's such a world apart from the disco that I'm used to. It's so much more 'car'. It's smaller, faster, more nimble and comfier. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I've had two so far, both being the 4.0 HO limiteds. First one was (black) was absolutely mint, the second one (blue) not so much!
I'd have another one tomorrow if I could live with 18mpg! That's a no go though with driving approx. 500 miles a week.
I still have the leather drivers seat from the blue one before it was scrapped to make a chair for my conservatory as it's so comfortable.
Good luck with it 👍🏻

Just wait till your fob stops working. Then you'll know my pain from last year  Isn't a problem on this one. PRE Facelift. No immobiliser. Just a line-of-sight LED IR fob for the CDL. Another reason to have bought an early one This even has the US type pin wiper arms. Update of sorts. This is how I bought it. This is now. Spot the difference. Apart from the side of the car and the weather. It had upon collection 2 blackwalls on the rear, matched. On the front, 2 while letter tyres, both different but similar, and not matched to the rear. Made it look REALLY scruffy. Got my tame tyre fitters so flip the white letters on the rims so it's on blackwalls all round. Much better visually. Also, my tat auction purchase from RRG17 has found its way on there. The exhaust post-cat was all new. But was too quiet and oddly bashed up. The cat was also rattling it's brains out so fearing an imminent collapse and exhaust blockage, I replaced with with a Volvo 940 turbo cat courtesy of speedy88 from his drift car, and fitted the WASP silencer to the system. Sounds mean now. Not too loud, not too aggro, just right for an otherwise pretty stock L6 powered station wagon. Why no one had actually used that silencer is beyond me as I have no broken the tradition of bringing it back to the auction year on year. Sorry guys!

I really enjoyed your Disco thread, looking forward to seeing what you do with this. Is the Disco the Land-Rover you talk of replacing with this? What happened to it?

Yea, the Ute has been bought back by the previous owner, he is a good friend of mine and he is over the moon with it. Sad to see it go but I needed more practicality again and I don't like putting the dog in our E28.

I've recently brought a car very similar to yours. The only thing I want to change is the over sized steering wheel with the airbag and get the early three spoke type. I've seen a few UK cars with them. I am so please you have started a thread and you have already done more work on yours than I've done in two months on mine. Wish mine was black and gold too with jeep square fogs up front. I've wanted one ever since watching Goonies as a kid Then there was this one in a great remake The vanishing I promise the last image of jeeps in movies These XJ jelopnik has been listed as getting rare in decent shape and are getting cooler have a look even Hollywood actors love them I'll stop and go to sleep

The early steering wheels are much nicer but I have cruise control and it works so I'd have to re-engineer that or find the corresponding multifunction stalk with the wheel, so I'm just going to have to live with the big square one for now. I didn't like it at first either but while I wont say it's grown on me, it doesn't annoy me as much as it did

Mine is a diesel and so far, I love it!

There is some good progress being made with this. I have ummed and ahhed about getting one for some time so as to scratch the 4x4 itch. The Defender or 110 V8 has been a contender for years.
How does this compare to your Disco?
A nice job on the wiring loom ; it annoys me that people will poorly crimp them just to say £10 on a lead which seems silly! Was that crimped when you re-made it?

I've bookmarked this to see where it goes.
A pal of mine had one in KL and we used to take turns driving to skeet shooting on a Saturday. He kept saying he liked my D-max but I don't think he'll ever part with his Jeep. Shame, if he'd offered a swop, I'd probably have gone for it!

He kept saying he liked my D-max but I don't think he'll ever part with his Jeep. Shame, if he'd offered a swop, I'd probably have gone for it! It'll be a simple build but hopefully it'll appease. In terms of comparison, it's drives totally differently. It's smaller, faster, more nimble and less boaty. It doesn't feel as 'invincible' as the discovery or any where near as 'go-anywhereable' but that's a perception thing, a stock disco is probably as good offroad as this, except this has a better drivetrain with the LSD and it has steering protection as standard unlike a disco. I digress, it's got a wonderful yank wagon on steroids charm. The motor is powerful, smooth and willing and sounds great. It's much more like a car than you'd imagine. It's also primarily RWD and they really got the autobox right in this. It'll pull power slides with ease out of junctions. I soldered the wiring loom and heat shrunk it, it just looks tidier and is easer to get back into the dash.

Looks great! I've had one of these and loved it, had a 2 inch lift kit on it and it was great fun to use off road. Mine was a diesel, but managed about 30mpg which made it slightly better for everyday use.

MY MD had an S reg Grand Cherokee until recently when he replaced it with a 2007 5.7 hemi version. His old one was quick as intercourse and the new one even more so (he drives like a loon). the old one was also indestructible, he took it to a new garage (his usual chap was on holiday) and they changed the oil (actually changed it unlike the other chap) and they reckoned that it had not been changed for several tens of thousands of mile, this was to no apparent detriment to the engine! it also sounded mint.

This is excellent. I bought one of 1989 vintage in grey with the gold accents and matching gold mesh wheels for my wife when she first came over the Switzerland.
It was a baggy old boat but she hopped it off and over everything as she got used to LHD and 6 months continuous snow. Surprisingly nippy when you get it moving (we both managed speeding tickets in it). I loved the enormous ker-CHUNK when you engaged 4WD.
It was also hilarious in the snow with RWD only engaged.
I quite fancy a clean late one such as yours. Off to check.....
