Managed to get a full day in the garage today. The bonnet got all my attention. This side has all 8 or so repair sections welded into the inner structure. Turn the bonnet around and start on the other side, The section on the right, I knew was rotten, so I chopped it out before the bonnet went for dipping. But this process holds no prisoners and gets everywhere I'm using dual gas struts for the bonnet, so this section got a couple of captives for the bracket. Come 5pm I'd had enough of patching the bonnet, this was as far as I got. Five sections all done, and the 6th ready to go in tomorrow. Not sure yet if I'm going to do the patches on the outer skin on, or off the car. Thanks for looking.

After spending about 10 hours with a grinder in one hand and a welder in the other...... It was time for a change a pace, and take the only working classic in the fleet, out for an hour in the New Forest. With batteries charged - the cars and mine, back for a couple of hours in the garage. Finished off the rust repairs on the inside of the bonnet. The rusty outer corners, I'm going to do with the bonnet back on the car, so I can check the fit. But I think I'm going to have to finish the filler work on the passenger side first, so I can get it back on the wheels, before I try fitting the big awkward panel. Thanks for looking.

Nice repairs! On my Rover P5B i had removed the skin from the frame to do repairs but welding it together agsain, changed the shape of the bonnet and it too a lot of work to get it right. This method will cause less warpage i hope. Keep up the good work! Peter

Great job on the repairs, I think you're right to have a break away from things from time to time. Personally speaking I can get weighed down by everything that needs doing so walking away for a few hours at least clears the mind.

Not too much of great interest this week, but it is all progress. I'm now the proud owner of my 3rd sunroof cover. This one is genuine unfitted NOS. Compared to the original which has been repaired with sikaflex and ali. The outer cover looks a bit smarter too Whilst the white against my light grey roof wouldn't be the worst combination ever. I think I'm going to get furniture clinic to match me some vinyl paint, and get it grey. I've spent quite a few hours in the garage detailing the rear 3/4. Some glaze, and lots of guide coat and blocking. Also been paying close attention to all the edges and joins, as this makes a real difference to the finished job IMHO. This is where I'm at Pretty much ready for paint are - Rear wing
- Sill
- B-Pillar
- C-Pillar
- Rear door
Just waiting for the etch primer to be delivered.

Some say bodywork is only done when your fingers hurt. Well I'm at that stage, so time to start masking. Masking takes me ages - there is probably 2-3 hours work here. The side opening bonnet isn't a modification, I have just run out of space to store the body panels. Tomorrow I should be able to spray the etch primer. Then the inner wing will get seam sealed and stone-chipped. The back 2/3rds will get some primer/filler. Thanks for looking.

A busy weekend First light coat of etch primer went on without drama, but now with the car all one colour, it revealed a few area such as this scuttle that needed a minor rework. I thought I'd caught all the edges, and got them as a constant radius - but seems not. A few hours detailing with glaze will hopefully pay dividends. Seam sealer on the inner wing. Then a 2nd heavier coat of etch over everything on the passenger side of the bodyshell Upol-gravitex on the inner wing. Then it was time to lay the cellulose primer filler. Lots on the sill and rear wing so it can be blocked down. Hours of masking gets ripped off in just a few minutes, but it is satisfying. Lots of paint and stuff went on, possibly too much, but the weather was nice, and I wanted to crack on. But I'm going to give the body shell some time to harden off. Next job is to get the front wing etch'd and stone-chipped ready to bolt back on. Thanks for looking.

ado16fool nice one - thanks for taking the time to register and post up. I'd love to see some of the early history of the car. I bought to from Cornwall, so maybe it has lived its whole life in that corner of the world before I got hold of it. I've got some history with it, be good to tie that up. Looking forward to the stories and pictures. Thanks again

Sure my Dad will have loads of pics and details from when he owned it he even has a huge mirror with the car on that still hangs in his spare room will defo get a pic of that and post up. It was origianly two tone red and grey but when he had some body work done and rear doors replaced he opted for the two tone maroon & grey as per the Australian cars spec. We've moved on/back to ADO16s these days i'll start a thread on them soon/ I'm over the moon the oxford is still alive as we feared it had been raced or broken up i found it this am here in work bored and googled the reg.

This will be a nicely preserved example. The work youve put in will give it many more years. To find some of its early history will add to your story.
These A60 fall from before my automotive experience so it's interesting to learn more about them.
Carry on 😎

Time to get rid of some of the 50 shades of grey. But first get the outer wing sorted. Quite a bit of detailing on the various repairs. Then etch primer, seal sealer, and then more etch before the Gravitex. Slather on some cellulose top-coat, taking care to get some paint on all the edges, so it can be bolted on. I still need to finish the filler work on the outside of the wing, but I'll do that when it is back on the car. Back onto the bodyshell, I'd previously blocked the primer filler, and re-masked. A very short garage means I've got to paint in sections. First pass of colour will allow me to get the panels back on, and the car back on its wheels. The inner wing is done too, so the outer wing can go on shortly. I was only using my little cheap touch-up gun. Something like this But even so I managed to get a pretty decent finish out of the gun on the sill. I've only got enough space in my garage to work on one loose panel at a time, but once the paint has hardened off a bit, I can get the wing on, and then start painting the doors one by one. Thanks for looking

i don't know anything about their construction methods, but it looks like paint coverings and seam sealing far surpasses the factory, in areas exposed to water and debris thrown from the road surface ?

The original BMC seam sealer has actually survived pretty well in some places. Shame they only seemed to use it in three places There wasn't much evidence of other factory rust proofing left on mine, I doubt it was a priority back in 1967 I've not been a slave to originality on some of my repairs in the inner wing/a-pillar/sill area as there are quite a few factory rust traps. But I've not boxed everything closed, rather than made it so it can be hosed out easily.

The front wing is bolted on, it has been on/off a few times, so it went back on without too many dramas. I used a non-setting sealant on the joints. I don't ever see me taking it off, but no need for Sikaflex/Tiger bond. More masking, so I can spray some grey around the door shuts. I wanted to get the grey on the A/B/C pillars so I can refit the doors, alas I've got some runs I need to address, as my trusty small spray gun was playing up. But I can't bolt the doors back on until the inners are painted. More masking A good coat of etch primer, and we are getting there. I'll leave that to dry overnight, and see if I can put some colour on it tomorrow. Thanks for looking.
