if you go to sbdev website, then "cars", that's me top left on the vauxhall section That GTE of yours sounded like a beast! got a new website since i wrote that, i think ! it was the grey gte in astra section www.sbdmotorsport.co.uk/index.php/cars/index/4367ok, the latest is..... engine has been removed, and sump to reveal... a rusty crank, covered in grazes and scars of all shapes, the shells have gone thru the copper and started getting warm, 2 of the pistons have been put in the wrong way round, and the pick up pipe has been repaired...very badly. The head is a proper Martech one, pistons are def' uprated, and luckily, the oil filter has done it's job....to a degree. glad i never paid the £3,500 asking price1 (i would be inside for murder by now...or an asylum!) because the engines set up at present is only 180ish, i have decided to have some hi lift cams fitted, and the have the flywheel lightened, it will be acid dipped as well, and also have a few other bits done, i am looking at another 2K.... oh well, i have come even further than previously...it needs to happen, but never again will i trust anyone regarding 'built' engines, unless there is a fool proof guarantee in one way or another..... i will update this section as it happens....... ive done the backwards piston thing, but i did all 4, and it didnt really matter as the exhaust cutouts are bigger than stock inlet valves anyway feel like youve got the shtty end of a someones stick there, the engines are usually robust even if assembled with half an ounce of common sense

Well, the stick is a big one, and there's lot of curse word on it! But! i picked up a bare block with a very good crank, only needs a polish, the ends look in good condition, the ones on the pistons look very worn but only on two of them, but, i have def' decided to go ahead, the latest cost including all labour and parts is around the 12K mark, guess the word MUG on my forehead just got bigger......

That's bad luck with the engine, I'm struggling to see how it can cost 12K to build a red top in that spec though?

No, you misunderstand, that's the bill for the whole car from the start, including the 2nd broken engine, 3 years wasted sitting in the back of a workshop at quest motorsport, then the axle, panels, modifications, labour, parts, ecu etc... this present engine owes me £1400 (before i realised it was built wrong and was being lied to by a scrote sack,) so now with the work involved it will rise to £3.400 The only good thing is that at least i know that everything is new, and that the engine will do what i want it to? But, i am sure i will have a smile on my face once it's all done, just need to raise some funds to finally get this pain in the butt finally finished. Soon as things get moving, i will update the page.

That’s a nice ratty more door. Bad luck with both engines but keep at it as it’ll be worth it in the end. Mine is just a 1640 xflow but still good fun.

Rebuild cost....£2,800 ! Glad i didn't ask for an outright animal to be built! As a good friend suggested, next time (if there is to be one) maybe the S 2000 engine in rwd mode? GRRRRRR!

Quick update, engine is now being put together, uprated cams, bolts, cam belt, water pump etc etc etc... spent thousands on this and has not even been on the road in all the years i have had it... now lost my mojo, but letting the guy go ahead and complete the engine, sadly, i think this will be going up for sale very soon after the work is done, just feel the need to try something else, it pains me, but i feel it needs to go........ it won't be cheap, but then again, cheaper than what it has cost me.......

This is the thing, to get it finished engine wise will mean another rolling road session and a tune up, BUT! a couple of friends gave me a good idea, to save on top of the range pistons and all singing/dancing bolts, rods etc.... why don't i look for an XE block that has pistons and just bolt my martech group b head onto it, but new standard parts but also use the throttle bodies and the ecu to get it all working, this will save me a great deal of money on uprated fast road cams as well, and it will still have a lot of go in it! so i am now going to try to source the required engine/block and go down the slightly cheaper route, then we will look for my mojo......cheers!

ok, quick update, acid dipping the block, new pistons, all parts that can have some shaving/lightening/balancing is being done, new water pump, cambelt. arp bolts, the group b head, porting is done, and to have this sorted including labour is costing me £2,700, with the throttle bodies and ecu... around the 180/190 bhp mark, if i want to break the 200 mark, it's another £1,000 so i won't be doing that! just about to send some pics off regarding the rebuild to the insurance company as i am going to up the agreed sum, then it's tune up time yet again! If i do decide to sell it, i feel £12k is justifiable, none of you need a breakdown of the parts if you have followed this from the start, parts alone equal this, and the car hasn't even turned it's wheel in anger!

Engine is nearly finished, head has been taken apart and rebuilt new pistons, rods, lightened and balanced rods, flywheel and crank & acid dipped the block, I have been working out how much has been spent and how much the parts have cost......never again! I had no intention of 're-inventing the wheel' i just thought that it was not a common thing to see today as it was years ago with the redtop, so why not? there would be plenty of old useable parts to source to do this......? the inlet manifold was one of the most difficult parts to find! then 3 engines later because you just cannot trust some people who seem to think they have rebuilt something, but with a rusty crank? and their own 'honest word?' NEVER AGAIN! Anyway, thousands and thousands of £'s later, and i have decided, i no longer want to take anymore joy in this wonderful vehicle, so as soon as i collect it from being re-assembled, it will be up for sale, i will not be replying to the usual...'but it's a 4 door... why don't you break it...? can i buy the Axle off you ?'As if i want to sit there looking at a car in bits......... i think not. It's not been without it's emotional stages, moments of anger, and very happy times when things slowly start coming together, but time has not been kind, and my desire has taken a downturn. Whoever buys the car won't be disappointed, and it certainly is, one of a kind........ The Vaud Escort mk2..... it's even on Google!
