Hi Chris, I need some further help on my plastic spoiler please. I followed the below steps but I can see sanding mark through the top coat. 400 wet sanding on the existing paint few coats of aerosol primer wipe with IPA 600 wet sanding wipe with IPA cleaned with tack cloth few coats of aerosol satin black leaving 15 minutes between each coat It's tricky to get a good pic showing the marks but are all over the spoiler. It was a gloss finish you could probably polish this back - However its not - you have a couple of choices you could flat that area to remove the marks then reprime / repaint or if the marks are a little too deep fill then with a fine filler / stopper then repaint - PITA but if you want it to look right you just have to persevere I'm afraid

Should I progress up through higher sandpaper grades rather than just using 600 on the primer?

Should I progress up through higher sandpaper grades rather than just using 600 on the primer? You could try 800's or worn 600's come to that - plus a little more paint next time

That's the trouble with aerosols, they put so little paint on the car as they are so over thinned to be able to come out of the nozzle. One coat of epoxy primer with a proper gun is probably equivalent to 20 coats of aerosol.

I've just put two coats of primer on it and there are zero sanding marks. I'll spray some upol satin black on it next. I thin all I need a compressor. Painting Outside is not ideal.

Picture to accompany post above! Not a problem at all you are better doing at this stage even though its still curing - dependant upon your finish you need to be using P1500 / P2000's wet & dry - don't go overly heavy at it and always with the flat of you hand - a little mild soap will help lubricate the wet & dry plus plenty of water - you shouldn't have any issues TBH you appear to have laid a decent gun finish on it hence it should respond to a light flatting - are you machine polishing it - if so what with polisher / product ?

Finish out the gun doesn't look bad at all to me tbh I've only got a silverline orbital polisher and some unknown pads which I think will be too aggressive perhaps, looks like you'd be better off sanding by hand JW

Looks good to me - a slight bit of peel but better that than the paint running & congealing in the roof gutters - be careful with the polisher close to the rain channels - protect the edges of the upstands with masking tape - rather than flat the entire roof - just do one small area to get your hand in and see what the result is - then you can progress from there - any issues just post them up and I'll get back to you

Although 2K does go fairly hard it's a bit of an old wives tale about it going rock hard. Yes it's easier to flat & polish within a couple of days but if you left it 2 years it would not be a great deal harder.
This is more from pro body shops that need to polish a car in a couple of hours, for us amateurs if it takes all day its really not an issue.

Are there any decent aerosol 1k fuel resistant laquers? Reviews for the few I've found are all pretty poor, and I haven't currently got the PPE for 2k spraying. Thank you

Not a body nor a paint question, but I figured this thread might have some knowledgable people that might be able to help.
In 2018 I drove from Norway to the UK in my TVR and on my way home the car started loosing coolant, but it did not pressurise the cooling system. Thinking I might get home by using a radiator sealant I stopped at Halfords in Guildford and bought a bottle of Steel Seal. I followed the instructions on the bottle and headed off. 350miles from home the head gasket let go and pressurised the cooling system pushing the coolant and the Steel Seal out through the radiator cap, my overflow tank quickly overflowed and the coolant and steel seal gushed out covering the engine bay and down the side of the car. It then got transported back home and the coolant with the steel seal dried on leaving a whiteish residue all over. Steel seal says it should was off, but I have had no luck even trying to use brake cleaner. The stainless steel exhaust manifold still show signs of the curse word and the only method to removed any of it has been to sand it off 😡🥵🤬
Does anyone have an idea of what chemical that might help remove the residue? It is still stuck on 2 years later and I am worried I will have to repaint the car to get it looking good again 😭😭😭

Thank you Give Jawel a call or forward them a e mail they should be able to recommend you something within their product range - TBH virtually all automotive lacquers are fuel resistant - the reason is that others find that they are not is because they don't follow the preparation guidelines or curing timescales for the products that they use - then they go online & moan about the product rather than their own inability to follow the product instructions in the first place

Some images of the damage / issues would be helpful When I try to wash it of it looks to come off, just to reappear when it dries 🤬🥵 Ok on the external paintwork I would try a good quality rubbing compound in a small area to see what results it achieves - if its very hard work you could always try carefully flatting with some P2000's & then polishing back - likewise with the inner wing areas only don't polish too much has you have a satin / matt finish - on your other under body components probably try a medium to fine scotchbrite - the exhaust headers will probably withstand something a little more abrasive - I would be very wary of using chemicals strong enough to remove this type of damage - they are probably going to cause more damage than what they do good but it might just be worthwhile trying a diluted TFL (traffic film remover) in a small inconspicuous area to see how that performs (but don't use on external paintwork)
