Good question, Luke. You can have a perfect, or new subframe, but if the mounting boxes at the front of the sills are shot, the wheel arches will crack. Any movement beyond play in the rubbers is transmitted directly to that weak point. The mounting boxes are very prone to catastrophic decay!

The front subframe boxes are not the best, obviously they are quite rusty but seem pretty solid. They certainly don't appear to be rotten through but the front near side wing was split which is a sign of stress i believe caused by corrosion in this area. Going to try and rebuild without shifting / replacing the whole unit...we'll see, it might come to it pulling the whole lot out yet. the rear end of the sills are very poor on the near side but not bad at all on the offside. They were litlerally full of curse word...and a dead mouse with most of the padding from my rear seat. :-(
Anyway, started to tackle the first rear inner arch and managed to get a good section, maybe 3/4 of the full lip fabricated so thats currently clamped in place with a bit of persuasion. Need to then get that stitched in so i can work up the rest of the inner arch while i have the correct line to work off.
Really should just concentrate on one section of the car but there are areas of rot that are just screaming to be cut out so keep flitting from one area to another. Not good.

Good work! I would, however, highly recommend removal of subframe c/w engine/transmission /suspension. Two experienced men can remove it in 38 minutes (our record!), and it makes any work on boxes/wheelarches/subframe, and components, sooo much easier!

Cheers fulvia1436 - now that sounds like a very quick removal of the front subframe. I'm new to fulvias so still working out how they go together so i imagine would take me more half a day plus with a job like that. So cool that it all comes away as one once you have un-plumbed everything.
Your help is much appreciated.

Scaffold plank just behind the gearbox aperture, tall trolley jack, remove wheels (don't lift the car under the plank, use the subframe x-member), remove brake calipers and hang up under wing, replace wheels, disconnect battery, undo steering column from steering box, remove col shroud, undo wiring connectors from steering col, undo 4x10mm nuts holding steering col under dash, pull col back into car, remove gearstick, drain water system, disconnect rad and remove it, disconnect heater hose from water manifold (nr distrubutor), disconnect exhaust downpipe from manifold, disconnect wiring from coil/starter motor/alternator/oil pressure sender/water temp sender/fan switch/horns, undo 6x19mm bolts, jack up car. I'm sure I've missed some details, but someone will spot it. Good luck, and don't hesitate...etc.

don't forget the calipers as the brake hoses were holding the whole subframe to the car when I did it. They leaked really badly after their stretching.... silly mistake. Its much easier than it sounds... honestly. Also there is a section of the footwell that is really hard to get to for de-rusting/welding without getting the subframe out the way. I took the engine out and then the subframe after but I recon it would be much easier to take the whole subframe out rather than just the engine. Ive got a few pictures of the body etc in my thread Pages 4 and 5 and 8 ish Oh and have a look at the great stuff that goldnrust has done. retrorides.proboards.com/thread/142841/1972-lancia-fulvia-coupe-pastures

Yes I've had a good nose at most of the Fulvia threads once I signed up here. Some great stuff. Did a bit more over the weekend. Inner arch fabrication and somebody had decided to hack away at both inside quarters...no idea why so bit of shaping and started rebuilding this area too. All the strength I can get will help. :-)

Rear nearside sill was an absolute joke with filler and curse word. Some folk just don't care about safety. Anyway the offside is nothing like this and actually pretty solid!
