£8k to take the car from where it is now to complete the paint is very strong money - to do it properly there is circa £1500 in paint & materials and about £2.5k in labour - you would certainly get a very good job for circa £4k (ish) - real world prices & guaranteed workmanship - nothing hidden - it's what I do day in day out - sure there will be loads of outfits that can blow it over for £1500 / £2k but you get what you pay for - the small one / two man operations without large overheads and guaranteed work is where you need to look and the ones that are really good at what they do are always busy and have decent lead times of several months. You would defiantly not loose anything buy having Chris finish your car for you & you would end up with one of the best Golf's in the country when it's done. It's well worth a tank of fuel and a few hours of your time.

I'll definitely make the time to go down in the new year I've followed his work since he made the suggestion and its immaculate. Yours too pal! Ive been dismantling the old KR and its quite a mess having a look at the sump first you can see my meaning. I couldnt believe the way this end cap just disintegrated. If you need any random 16v engine parts let me know as I stripped one years ago 10+ years ago and have everything apart from the head which was scrap.
I had bought it to fit in a mk1 but when i stripped it to put new valve guides in it i found the the gasket had been blowing between 3 and 4 so long it had worn a grove you could fit your little finger in... Oddly i actually drove the car the engine was in before it got scraped and there was no noticeable issues and run perfectly...
Keep up the good work I do love a MK2...

I do have a complete replacement engine but i may be looking out for replacement injection system parts. I'll keep you posted. Further diagnosis of the engine has discovered... no.4 piston small end bearing failure. I am amazed this was still running up until they took it out! Engine has now been completely stripped. Last of the KR updates. Everything has now been categorised and shelved. This is the first time I've ever stripped an engine. It has been enormous fun (wow, if my party mad younger self could see me now). But also a good learning process too. I would love to see this rebuilt one day as its tbe original engine but if that ever happens it'll be wayyyy off anyway.

The most efficient way to get rid of rust/crud/grime/paint in large batches is Hydrochloric Acid or Brick Acid as its sometimes known. If you value your respiratory system and/or your abilty to procreate then use a good quality respirator if you ever decide to use this stuff. Saftey glasses go wothout saying. There is some examples of a before and after on the rear caliper carriers and the bias valve mounting plate.

Can I just say that changing careers takes guts; it's not easy (because you get used to the money etc and a comfort zone, however unhappy the job makes you). But when people get a plan, it makes others want to help them.
Congratulations on the engine strip and the bodywork etc (and your grandad seems like someone all of us could look up to).
Knowing what you want (and recognising the difference between hobby and work) is v important.
And also; I've not met the chap that is working on the jowett utility van but by god I'd have him work on anything I owned; his attention to detail, his workmanship, his work ethic, is second to none in my opinion.

Citric acid works well too and it's easier to handle. I bought a big bag 5kg of it. It's a white crystalline solid so no issues with dissolving your toes off if you are a bit slosh-happy. Just dissolve a couple of cup fulls in hot water and drop your rusty piece of carp in there. Leave to bubble for a day or so and check it out. Give it a swizzle with a wire brush and leave again if necessary. Quick process below on some manky bits: Manky FTO lower suspension arm Tub of hot citric acid....fizz...fizz....fizzz Most of the corrosion removed Wire wheel in a drill action gives you this Masked and acid etch primed Enamel paint and loads of cavity wax protection injected in it....better than new!

Thanking you for the tip 😀 I will look into it as the hydrochloric acid is pretty brutal. The fumes linger for a good while. It is effective though. Its available from eBay (where else?) And after a quick search the citric acid is there too.
And yes ta for the advice re the change of career. I'm in a new place of work now and it is better than my last but I am still looking at changing completely. In a way I'm glad because I'm exploring new avenues that I would never have considered before. However I have to be ABSOLOUTELY certain that whatever 'niche' I choose is the right one for me. Things are looking up though.

Funny how time can run away from you. It has been an 'interesting' 6 months. I bought an Xtyoe estate as a daily, which decided to breakdown on the busiest roundabout in town at the busiest time if day. Wasted a month chasing my tail around what I can only describe as a delicately sensitive delphi injection system. Then bought a Berlingo which I do like except I needed to replace the front suspension, wheel bearings and clutch cable. However the precious, I mean erm Ellen has always been at the back of my mind, like a some kind of petulant child that wont leave me alone. I really did get overwhelmed with it really (I'll never be able to finish it) were the general thought processess. BUT, I just started doing little bits again and it has recently slowly began gathering momentum. You may recall I bought a POR 15 kit. Then I started de-rusting my wishbones. The metal prep. It is required to keep the metal wet so every 10 minutes or so I reapplied this, took about 30 minutes until it got a required etch. Then 2 coats of por15. No brush strokes are evident and this is without the chassis black top coat so I've decided to keep it as is.

Next on the agenda are the hubs. I bought G60 Hubs, calipers and carriers as they carry a 280mm disc over the 256mm standard gti disk. And since this is running an ABF with around 40-50 bhp more over the KR it is only sense to beef up the stopping power too. The hubs stripped down and derusted using a variety of wire wheels drill/dremel attachements. You can really see the etching effect of the metal prep here. Then we get into the fun stuff. I'll just kick back and watch my 93 year old grandad do all the leg work One of our new toys. Love this thing, the press i mean but yea i live my grandad too. Its very satisfying pressing in new bearings. And new outer hubs pressed in too. And for my job tomorrow. Treating the floor pan. Even though its etch primed i have noticed a layer of surface rust. So its all getting stripped back and treated with the Bilt Hamber range. Hydrate 80 rust killer/converter. Electrolux high zinc primer. Dynax s50 cavity wax. Dynax UC underbody wax and Bilt Hambers seam sealer. I'm also using the por 15 chassis balack top coat after priming it.

After doing my (then) g/fs mk2, I swore I'd never strip underseal without a rotisserie again. Awful job. Keep up the good work! I've 280s on mine, just an 8v,but no fading on the Ring, Spa, or a local track.

All them hours on my back scraping underseal and old paint are beginning to pay off. Just about finished with that horrible job. Ive rust treated the back of the car and both rear wheel arches with Hydrate 80. Marvellous stuff. This is the colour as soon as you pour it into a suitable container. I do apologise for the rubbish photos (this is the right rear wheel arch). Before and after. And the spare wheel well area. Next time I'll get a jig. I used two coats of the stuff. The instructions recommend leaving for 20 mins then applying another coat whilst brushing at a 90° angle from your first... so thats what i did.

You could try spraying it on rather than brush and a rotating Spit jig would help you a lot.
